FAQ
Q) Why are there comments from a week ago when this video has just gone live today?
A) Patrons usually have early access to videos. I'll show the first version of a video on Patreon and often the feedback I get results in a video going through further revisions to improve it. e.g. Fix audio issues, clarify points, add extra footage or cut extraneous things out. I agree. This is one of the most hilarious videos by techmoan
Maybe a new category like the Cheese ones... instant noodle videos doing awesome reviews of terrible products trying to find the good in everything.

1:26 "Effective elimination of sound". Just what you want from a sound card.
You might want to be able to say mute vocals on a track you want to use for karaoke, but you wouldn’t want to mute the whole track, unless this just refers to a standard mute button function. Maybe a vocal mute was what they meant? Or maybe that refers to a mute function like the mute button found on many modern USB audio conferencing headsets.

So “Tone sandhi” is a misguided translation of “变调”. In music, that word means “key change” or “pitch change”. But the term is also used in linguistics to refer to a situation in tonal languages like Chinese where the tone of a word changes when it’s next to a certain other tone - in English that’s called “tone sandhi”
Would it hurt for these Chinese companies to employ an English speaking person to translate for an hour?

Products like these always make me wonder if some factory in Shenzhen found themselves stuck with a buttload of surplus pushbuttons and knobs and they asked themselves "What can we design and manufacture that would eat up all of these components? It honestly doesn't matter _what_ the damned thing does."
That's often exactly what happens. There are even companies that literally just buy up excess widgets from companies in the hopes they can cobble something together to make a product to flog on the various auction sites.
Sony should buy a license to it and make this m.czcams.com/video/8AyVh1_vWYQ/video.html

First thing I thought of!
I laughed out loud at the depressed robot reference! :-D (Hello Marvin!)
Otherwise what a weird little box!
This came from the same factory as Marvin. No wonder all the diodes down his left side hurt.
10:42 I think mute or "vocal cut" is designed to remove the existing lead vocals from a recorded song so you can sing over it yourself. It just puts the right channel out of phase with the left and mixes them into mono, thereby cancelling out anything in the centre, which is typically where the lead vocal is placed. A filter prevents it from removing the bass, which is also usually in the centre. You would need to connect a device to play the background music, which is probably where the Bluetooth comes in. The key changing button probably pitch shifts the backing music into your desired singing key.
I had the exact same thought - this device probably works better (as a relative term), if it's supplied with music on another channel. As an example, the Dodge effect is almost certainly "Duck", which doesn't make a quack sound, but 'ducks' one signal out of the way of the other. So you'd be talking while the music was playing, and the music would 'duck' out of the way of your voice while you were talking, then go back up in volume whenever you stopped. Monitor is probably for just that, a monitoring channel, where you can hear all channels at the same time.
Yup, you connect a second phone or a laptop (that will play the music you'll be singing along to) to the Live 2 or the Accompaniment port at the back.
After watching this video I can hit the contempt button!
"Together Up" should be "一起上" in chinese, which actually means "Go together" or "Fight together". Feels like it is translated by someone looking at a dictionary.
Hundreds of thousands of Chinese people speak English better than I do, I always wondered why these companies can't find people to write instructions for the US market...
@@seanobrien7169 Excatly! It feels like they don't care as long as there's "English words" on the product...

The weird thing is it seems they can actually work. When he was using different effects and sound, if you pay attention to the light, they rise and fall with his voice. Just like how he needed to plug in a mic to get another mic working, there's some weird gimmick in order to get the Lights working as well.
@@ImCurrentlyNaked I noticed that, too. Consistently inconsistent, or inconsistently consistent? 😉
@@ImCurrentlyNaked Maybe the do-nothing-light-mode is activated when it thinks there is no sound input, but that feature is broken or set to the wrong threshold.
if you have seen some of those kids dj mixers, they have lights that do the same, somewhat respond
Love the channel! Whenever I'm feeling a bit down I can always watch a video from your back catalog and it picks me back up. Thanks for the wonderful content.
Someone smarter than me could probably circuit bend this into an instant classic noise machine.
So smart
I believe the reason "Awkward" is a crow cawing is because it's an anime trope. In Japanese, the onomatopoeia for the sound a crow makes is "AHO" or "BAKA", which both also mean "fool" or "idiot", hence why you would hear a crow cawing when someone says something stupid. So you weren't too far off when you said it was like the old tumbleweed gag.
I figured this would be a cultural difference. In the US, I would expect crickets.
For a second I genuinely thought it would be because the crows sounded like they were saying "awk!" and laughed my arse off. But yes this does make a lot more sense :D
@@Muzer0 What sort of call does an auk make? That would have worked on a whole other level.
Maybe its like "awk" as in the sound a bird makes?
I seem to recall Ed, Edd n Eddy using a crow sound effect whenever someone said something stupid. Now I know why. Even without knowing the origins, it always cracked me up as a kid.
"Thief" seems appropriate for what is clearly copywritten music.

Bit of context/ explanation from a person living in Asia:
This generic no brand "V8 sound card" is widely common and used here, i keep seeing Facebook streams that are using their phone to do livestreams and have this hooked up directly to the phone via usb and aux, and this inexpensive thing also enables for external mics to be plugged in to the phone, the unbranded BM-800 is a common mic being sold with this too in some online stores. I personally dont use this because the quality control is lacking and there is a 50-50 chance that the unit you will get is broken from the factory/shipping.
Quality control in China lacking? I am shocked.
@@iamperplexed4695 Everything is made in China, with all levels of quality control. But when you buy the cheapest stuff, you don't get any quality control because it costs money.

I really like the idea of a pitch changer being controlled by a fader. You could have a lot of fun with that.
The *Dodge* button reduces the level of the music while you speak and turns the music volume up after you have stopped speaking. It's so a DJ can be heard above the music.
Yes, should be called "duck" as ducking is what it's called normally
@@TheSynthnut Given that "duck" and "dodge" are both used in English to mean avoiding something, sounds like misinterpretation of a dictionary.

I'm almost certain Electro-Acoustic mode is supposed to be a very basic from of pitch correction similar to autotune. You could hear little pitch correction artifacts when it was on and explains why it was cycling through different keys each time you pressed it. If you wanted to sing along to a song in the key of D major you would press the button until it got to D major and it would try to tune your singing to only the notes in that key.

That "gun" sound effect sounds like the being of the opening theme of Are You Being Served

Just checked the original product in Chinese. It seems that "Mute" (消原音) refers to eliminate the original vocal track from music so you can sing along, similar to what's used for karaoke. "Dodge" (闪避) seems to reduce the volume of music when someone is speaking so they could be heard.
According to the product page I found in Taobao, the purpose of this product is to provide a out-of-box audio mixing solutions for gaming streamers / live-stream sales / online karaoke. Most people don't have much experience with audio mixing software, and some of them uses their own smartphone for broadcasting, so this device makes some sense. The listing price in Taobao is only 98 CNY (~15 USD), and it seems to have more than 6k reviews, mostly positive, although I am not sure if these reviews are all genuine.
