My friends and l spent our teen years wearing out the grandstands at Fremont drag strip, from 1966 thru 1972, where we personally watched the evolution of factory muscle cars. And in terms of looks and performance, and in spite of Chevrolet propaganda, after their L88 Corvettes, the big dog on the block was the Buick 455 stage 2... not the SS 454

@@woodyw6891 In the mid 1960's, the car manufacturers would ship a muscle car to their choice of magazine for them to test and publish the results.
In the late 1960's thru 1970's, the car manufacturers would ship a "pre-prepared" muscle car to their choice of magazine, along with two factory tuners. And with Pomona drag strip already scheduled for an entire week, the tuners would work tirelessly to set the fastest possible ET..

BULLSHIT..those old cars were crap.....weak brakes, lousy suspensions, gas guzzlers, poor build quality, rusted bodies, and the horsepower ratings were OVER RATED by 20% on average. A 1970 426 was advertised at 425 hp gross but is only 350 hp net....a 2024 Dodge 5.7 puts out more at 375 net. And the newer cars are far more reliable.

@@carolinacoins LOL///no 396 stock was ever putting out 500 hp--total bullshit. No engines were ever under rated for insurance..another myth. They were OVER RATED to sell cars by using the fake Gross method. HP reading with belts, air filter, muffler, and accessories removed was 375 GROSS. Put all those items back on and it comes to 305 net. Same with 440-6 at 390 gross, but 325 Net.
After 1971 ALL gross ratings were banned and only net numbers were allowed and all numbers were changed as in LOWERED in the parts catalog. 396 was sold as 375, 350, and 325. real NET was changed 305, 275, and 255. Stop spreading old fairy tales.
