Only Ray could make a cabin air filter replacement entertaining enough for people to keep watching.
😄😄
"Oooh that smell! Can't you smell that smell! Oooh that smell! The smell that's around you!"
- Lynyrd Skynrd
Gimme back my bullets!
Dead bird...
the smell of fat orange jesus diaperrrrrrr!
What's worse is a dead mouse somewhere in your car lol
Been there, done that, got the T-shirt.
Who gave you the T-shirt as i normally do not get one if crap happens.
I found the remains of one that got squished by the serpentine belt. I was too squeamish to remove it by hand so I gave a couple quick blasts with ny air gun.
Could be worse. Daughter threw up - milk down the rear seat and into the boot (trunk). I sold the car it was rank!
Yes it is I bought a used LS430 with a dead mouse and nest in the fan cage. I didn’t see it at first as I change cabin air filters every 6 months. If y’all done have one an ozone generator is worth the investment, about $100.
There is a shop near my job I have my oil changed. They used to do that all the time and tell me it would be $70 for an engine air and $60 for my CAF. I would tell them put it all back, I am not paying you $130 for 2 filters that combined don't cost more than $30 from AutoZone and less than 5 minutes of work. Now they already know not to touch them in my car. Only took them 3 years to learn.
So you know they are dishonest and you still go back?! How do you know if they even changed the oil filter? They can just clean it. I’ve seen that before.
If it works, it works. Good learning money. FFS, how hard can it be to ask the customer first? "Please note that it was so-and-so long ago it was changed"
@@justpray365 It's not that they are dishonest. It's an upsell and I understand that. I would say they were dishonest if they did it and tacked on the charge and then expected me to pay for it. But I understand how it would be seen as them being dishonest.
@@edreeves3342
An upsell is a fair practice to try if the price is fair. Any shop that more than doubles the real cost of installation is dishonest. Good luck. I have seen many cars lately that have been to that kind of shop, and the oil and or oil filter was never changed. One old guy even took his car to the dealer and they didn’t change the oil, oil filter, or air filter. He got charged anyway.
Show me where those filters combined cost $30 or less, cabin air filters alone are usually $40-60. If you want to buy garbage Walmart FRAM's that are well-known to fall apart, go for it. Imagine risking your $10,000 engine to save $20 on air filters. You probably spend that at Mcdonald's and don't think twice about it.
Im so glad you use proper English Ray, because at one point you said "I don't smell very well," If you had said I don't smell very good you may have trouble acquiring customers.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
It took me a minute to get that!🤣🤣
He is worried he doesn't smell good but that's only because he doesn't smell well
So true 😂
yez--hee speeka da gut Inglich?😃
Pro Tip: before pulling the filter out slip a thin piece of carboard the same size as the filter under the old filter. This way when you pull it out any large debris doesn't fall down into the fan. Living in a rural area with a lot trees this has proven helpful.
I usually do a light vacuum job in the filter housing in addition.
Use an Aluminum clipboard from the office supply store
already replaced fan, and need to wire resistor and get a new filter cause of parking under a tree
I like this idea, always had the problem of debris falling in the fan, thank you!
Locus trees!😖If you know you know!
I'll never forget, when I was informed, that my 2009 Subaru Outback had a cabin filter, 50k miles into ownership.
They told me of this, when I was at the dealer, getting warrantee work.
They quoted a reasonable price for replacement, so I let them change it.
It was sooo disgusting!!!
Since then, I replace mine every year!
Ray, I took my truck in for a oil change and was told it needed a new cabin air filter. I told the writer that was strange, because I had just replaced it about 2 weeks prior. A lot of these shops just tell you things hoping you'll be a good little sheep and do it. This same dealership charged me for an engine air filter, which I had not approved prior to their doing it. I always do my own checks just to make sure the oil level is correct prior to leaving. When I opened the hood it was obvious from the dust covering the air filter housing that it hadn't been touched. I opened it up, removed the filter, and two dead butterflies fell out of it. I took it in and showed the service writer the dirty filter, he called out the service manager who immediately offered a refund. I refused their refund, offers of free oil changes, etc. I let them keep the $50 they stole from me, loudly telling every customer and service writer that if they needed to steal money from customers for service not performed that was fine, but they would never see me again. I also left them a scathing review online. They must have called me 10 times afterward, I refused to take their calls.
Fargin' Bastiges! Why I've returned to doing my own work, where/when I can. Several years ago I was doing 5,000 mile interval oil changes on the Honda Fit I was driving. Asked the girl that I dealt with in the quick lube place to print a sticker for 5K Miles. 'Oh! I can't do that!' Told me my oil was only good for 3,000 miles, then it would start going bad. She had just attended a company seminar and knew that was true. . .
Some of the old cars don't have cabin air filter. My friend took his old Focus to a quick lube shop, clerk came in and showed him a filthy cabin filter, and offered to change it. My friend replied "I have no idea where you got that from, but my car has no cabin filter, I will not back".
I was just about to post that a quick lube shop will try and sell you a cabin air filter whether your vehicle has one or not. Also, if they do happen to convince you to replace the cabin air filter, they will charge you more than $40 for a $10 filter.
@@kennethking2301 This and on the cars that do have one, it is usually a 5 to 10 min process to change it. However, the quick lube will charge a whole hour's worth of labor.
I was in a quicky lube for an insurance inspection and watched them bring in a dirty intake filter to a woman, problem was I saw it wasn't even from her car. I put a sharpie mark on my filter so I know if the dirty one is actually from my car.
I put the date & mileage on all my filters when I install them. Plus, I change all my own filters. I tell them not to even bother looking at them.
I just did what Ray said (googled cabin air filter for a Ford Focus) and I found one that fits all models from 1998 to 2007, so I'm calling BS on that story.
Be classed as”hate crime” in the uk we said China like that to the wrong person.
You have me saying Chineseiam now though😂

LOLOLOL, that's funny just an MP-5 chilling in the back floorboard.

The phrase "Trust but verify" originated as a Russian proverb: "Доверяй, но проверяй" (Doверяй, no proveryay). While the exact origin is unclear, it predates its popularization in the 1980s.
Though not the originator, Ronald Reagan, the former US President, is widely credited for bringing the phrase to international attention. He used it frequently during nuclear disarmament talks with the Soviet Union.
I remember this from watching Chernobyl 😂
Reagan made that phrase popular in recent history, I have no clue when it first appeared.
I thought Stalin said that.
@@hammondclarkson9201Stalin was a paranoid, he trusted zero people.
@@hammondclarkson9201 Like I said I had no idea who originated it just that Reagan made it famous during his Presidency. Trust, but verify is a Russian proverb, which is rhyming in Russian. The phrase became internationally known in English after Suzanne Massie, a scholar of Russian history, taught it to Ronald Reagan, then president of the United States, the latter of whom used it on several occasions in the context of nuclear disarmament discussions with the Soviet Union. Wikipedia
I'm an old gearhead from years gone by. I check my wipers, sir filter and cabin air filter on both of my vehicles as well as my county vehicle. I change them routinely once a year unless they look bad, then I change them sooner. Love your videos, Ray. Keep them coming. You and Eric O. can make changing a cabin air filter or wiper blades entertaining. Thanks/
Trust and Verify was said by President Ronald Reagan when discussing relations between the US and the former Soviet Union way back in the 1980's. It was told to President by a Scholar of Russian History by Suzanne Massie
What's EXTREMELY impressive is how you video mechanics can do so much ONE-HANDED!
What I think about the question posed is that it is very hard to find an honest mechanic. Kudos to Ray!
Our BG representative taught us to spray the entire evaporator and spray the BG Frigi Fresh spray down through the middle vents before the fan was activated. We later used the foam through the fan opening or use the long tube supplied with the foam cleaner down through the center vents. Typically, the center vents were closer to the evaporator. In addition, spray Frigi fresh through the outside intake vent (open outside vent doors) so the chemical can be sucked into the evaporator. We would check the condensation drain tube and occasionally see dark matter draining from the drain after the foam spray was used. It worked very well to eliminate mold and mildew. Change your filters every 10-12,000 miles. You would be amazed of the garbage that enters your vehicle cabin. Great posting Ray.
I usually like to send it in through the drain tube at the bottom but since I wanted to cam the evaporator I deviated slightly this time
@@RainmanRaysRepairs You send it through "the train tube" ... where's that located?? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@john_thorpe hahaha typo
Wow, this procedure with the BG product is completely incorrect. BG Frigi Fresh is to be sprayed thru the outside fresh air vent at the front cowl with the blower motor fan speed ON and not ON recycled air but outside air and cycle thru each vent setting between sprays and the entire product is to be used. Also, BG or any other aftermarket products can be used to clean the evaporator thru the drain tube. This is foam cleaner application and different product. I saw this and all I saw was the product used as a "cologne" and a typical cabin air filter replacement. IMHO and from experience, not how it should be done at all. Improper use of the SNAKE OIL.
We went decades without cabin air filters and dealt with it. However, while watching this video I went ahead and ordered a new cabin filter and engine filter too. Thanks for the reminder!
Great video Ray, I stopped my Honda dealership every time I would take my Ridgeline in for an oil change. The service writer would call me “ hey you need an air filter and a cabin filter “ and I would say no very time being very easy to replace. I replaced both air and cabin filter with K&N I know a lot of good and bad reviews on K&N but totally stopped my dealership from calling me. I put a note on my dash “ this vehicle equipped with K&N filters.
You are the best! Us gals love watching your channel too! When you found that filter buried behind that panel, my Gen X brain though Ray's found the honeycomb hideout! Seriously, those in cabin air filters are a lifesaver for those of us with allergies and asthma, I def change them often, usually 6-12 months here in my dusty/allergen infused climate. Keep on rocking!
I did a cabin filter job on my in-laws car a year ago. The filter was original when I removed it. 2014 Honda HRV. The filter was black from debris and grime. The fan and evap needed a good clean as well. I did a similar process to what Ray just did. Mint result. Now my in-laws come to me do all their car service work.
In addition to inspecting/changing the cabin filter on a regular basis, a simple trick I've done over the years is to turn off the A/C shortly before reaching my destination and allowing the cabin fan to continue blowing on the "fresh air" (not "recirc") setting -- this helps prevent condensation/mold buildup inside the HVAC box and the musty smell therein. My 18 y.o. LS430 has zero HVAC odor (despite living in a dusty SoCal desert environment), so either I'm just lucky or there's actually a benefit to my madness. Of course this only works if your system allows you to manually turn off the compressor (mine does even though it's a fully automatic dual zone system) -- newer vehicles may have eliminated the compressor dash switch entirely.
I always do the same, and have for years. My 2002 Silverado have perfectly operating A/C and no odors when it was sold last year.
@@rwcz28 Some cars will run the fan for five minutes after shutting the engine off to let the condensate evaportate and minimise any bacterial growth and odours.
Cabin air filter is a must! But wish you did not have to dig out half of the dash to get to it! Love the channel Ray..glad to see you are prospering!
“I had it, then I lost it! The story of my life.” Gets me ROFL every time. Thanks for the content Mr Ray.
Thanks Ray, many vehicles I have owned are even easier to do, just lower the glove department open the filter area with 2 clips on it change filter and reassemble. Takes about 5 to 10 minutes as I also shop vac the area out as well.
This video is right up there Ray with you 30 minute video of changing the blade on your mower in the out building you sold.
Most GM HVAC systems have a feature called "Afterblow" that can be activated using a bidirectional scanner. It works by running the blower for an amount of time, after the vehicle has been driven & parked. This dries out the EVAP from excess moisture, where mold/mildew like to live. Especially useful for humid environments like Florida!
Hey Ray great video! I was a GM tech back in late 80’s and into early 90’s. Would run into stinky ducts and such. GM actually covered it if I’m not mistaken, the was a can of disinfectant you’d spray up thru the drain hole and use air pressure to blow it around some. Seemed to work pretty great as I recall. Anyways please keep them comin Ray. I’ve enjoyed everyone of them, especially since you went out on yer own! Peace and loves to all yall
Good morning ray, another wonderful video. Grandson coming by tomarrow to watch videos he missed. And help weld gate frames for his uncle's business. Along with me cutting and notching pipe. Enjoy the weekend.
I've used the foam treatment by removing the filter, replacing the cover, and then putting in half of the spray into the condensation tube and the rest into the air intakes under the cowel (sp?). Then run the vents on high for 5 minutes. Then liquid schmoo comes out of condensation tube.
I can’t wait to smell it 😎 I haven’t had enough coffee to consider the filter conundrum
Another awesome educational video for us DIY’ers. Carry on Sir.
Ray love your channel like I said you’re one of the best on CZcams knowledgable and your camera shots are really clear and good keep up the good work my friend
How did you know I needed this AC video just now...🤔
Same thing with the Dodge pentastar oil cooler....
You're great, sir.
nice change from the usual mechanical repairs. my own car HAD a cabin air filter which was a pita to change so it's gone and no appearent difference in air smell or quality...keep up the good work Ray. you are a day brightener!
Thanks for the vid Ray!
On your question, you show me dirty filters without asking me to check them. How does the “average” customer even know those are from their car/truck? Many a corrupt business will pull that kind of BS. I do my own work, but my dad always told me request the changed out parts be left in the trunk. I thought that was crazy until I actually saw a friend get charged for the parts and labor and they didn’t change a thing. Great reason to bring your business to a trusted mechanics shop and refer them to your friends. If I didn’t request something I’m not paying for it.
Verify then change. Awesome 👌🏻 Ray video
Good morning Ray have a blessed weekend
BG makes stuff for everything.
Fun video. Yes I do believe cabin air filters are necessary. Live confidently and peacefully
Good job Ray. Yes on the cab air filter.👍👍
One of my customers pronounce it "ChEEnah". Also, when I worked for a major parts company, we were trained to tell the retail customer that the box was made in China, but the product was made in the USA.
Ha. Last year I purchased a 2002 Toyota 4Runner. The next day I went to Autozone to pick up oil and all the filters to service it. The book by the filter section listed a cabin air filter so I got one. After spending way too long looking for it, I did some googeling and found out that my 4Runner doesn't actually have a cabin air filter. In fact, no 3rd gen 4Runner has a cabin air filter.
My 2010 Escape has a cabin air filter listed at some parts places, and no filter at others. It doesn't have one.
The reason you may find one listed is because you can add them aftermarket when the vehicle wasn't equipped with one.
Definitely more common as an aftermarket item for off-road/4x4 type vehicles.
@@donwyoming1936 I have a 2009 Escape and I just checked the service manual. At certain mileages it says "Replace cabin air filter (if equipped)."
@@TremaineLea The only aftermarket one I've found is a custom 3d printed contraption with a custom filter. The one at Autozone definitely isn't that. To put in the custom one, you have to remove the fan. I'll just run without.
My 98 4Runner has no cabin air filter - After 20 years the blower squirrel cage was packed full of cottonwood fluff & it started to vibrate, so after removing all that fluff it was good as new and the airflow was back to original volume. Never noticed the reduced air flow as it slowly dropped when the fan filled up over those 20 years. Amazing how much air was making it thru all that fluff....it was packed solid (lots of cottonwood trees here)
Cabin air filter had NEVER been changed before I purchased (2017) my '06 Volvo xc90 V8. My nose was assaulted by the cornucopia of odors. It had mold, leaf debris, and animal fur embedded. Fresh, clean and leather smell now.
this is a real wakeup call, you are so right
It’s a camera on a stick “Live with it”
Love it. 👌🏼
FYI, I found that Poof really works well, neutralizing any odors in a car, especially smoke and pet odors.
Ahhhhh, smells good, Ray.
That Tahoe is sounding pretty nice👍
I think cabin air filters are a great addition to modern vehicles. Back in the day they were rare, but now almost commonplace. Anything to help improve the air for the passengers. In addition to the filter, the evaporator cleaning was very interesting. I've been in vehicles that did have a noticeable odor from the A/C. I guess over time the evaporator does get dirty even with the filter. Thanks for this video. I did enjoy it. 🙂
I've used that cleaner it worked pretty good to be honest better than i thought
Ray you need Guggenheim scissors 🤣🤣
They do recommend to change the filter every year. Just like the filter on your home heating/AC unit they get dirty. The problem is where they put them. They have gotten better in the placement of them. But some makes you have to dismantle a lot of stuff to get to the filter.
When I went to Auto Zone to get a replacement cabin filter for my 2020 Colorado. The counter person didn't know what he was looking for. After asking about engine size and if it was 4 or 2 wheel drive, he told me that they were out. So I went to O'Reilly. They just asked if I wanted a regular filter or a hepa filter. So asking at the auto parts store may not always be helpful.
I like the Toyota kit you spray through the drain Hose and then spray the second can through the cowl into the blower. Worked well for my Camry when it started to smell like gym socks
I don't know why I find it so funny to see Ray throw empty spay cans.
Ray those microguard heppa filters are badass! Those are what i use on my own vehicles.
This vid is so well timed for me personally as I have my own “Project Chrysler of Japan “ with rodent damage in the vent system🤦♂️👍
We use a product called Airco well with which we flush the evaporator clean through the cabin filter box. It’s much better than ozone.
At my dealership, we dont charge labor for cabin air filters and engine air filters. We only charge for the filters themselves.
When I bought my Jeep Wrangler Unlimited in 2013 I found out that while there was a place for a cabin air filter it did not come with one. I bought one and installed it in the slot. After seeing your video I will be cleaning the evap coils on my 96 truck and 2004 Toyota.
That filter kept all that organic matter from entering your cabin so ya, they serve a purpose...in my humble, only really means anything to me, opinion. Have a great Friday all bits at Ray's Repairs!! Specially Luna!!
As always a great video. Ray I am addicted to these videos as I love to learn about repairing cars. The fake firearm on the floor in the passenger compartment made me laugh. My first thoughts were “ Rays shop must be in a rough part of town” but I ended up on the thought of “Rays just ready for when one of those cars he works on decides to transform into a robot.”
Welcoming back!
Good evening Ray. My bedtime video 😀
They are great.
That is a stellar way to see if you have a filter.
Another thing to check is the channel under the windshield on the outside. It is where the fresh air inlet is and also where the water coming off the windshield drains. If the drain hole gets blocked it can allow the water to drain inside the vehicle through the fresh air inlet sometimes leaving puddles on your floor board or just soaking your carpets and causing a bad smell.
I have the exact same thing, but it from smoking when I was younger. It is a double edged sword though, bad smells are never a problem but it meant I got all the nappy changes for the kids number 2's....
Toyota makes an excellent system cleaner. Works better than the other ones I’ve tried.
Charcoal cabin Air Filters are the great. It makes sticks go away. Also, it stops all that debris being sucked into the coils.
Great video! I noticed that this car requires a lot of steps to remove the filter. All I have to do on my car is open up the glove box and it’s right there.
The "paper" is called "media", just FYI from a trucker that hauls it often.
I didnt know my 2004 Corolla had a cabin air filter until 180k miles.
It had shrunk down to 3/4 size and wasnt square anymore.
Gnarly!
I like having the filters
My vehicle has no cabin air filter. I actually cut small holes in the HVAC box with a Dremel tool. A small round one before the AC coil and a little bigger square one after the coil. The small round in front lets me see how dirty the coil is and spray cleaner in, I had a tad over 100K when I did this and it was unbelievably filthy and clogged. I used one of those foaming house hold cleaners. From the back side square hole I used a shop vac to blow air through the opposite way. Worked pretty well. Afterwards I duct taped up the holes. I check it again In another 100K. lol
Was like dang rays a gangster. Has an mp5 just sitting in the back
I usually don't charge labor for an air filter, if I'm doing any other work. Supposed to do the foam with the cabin filter out. You get more air flow with it out. Also, I use Febreze on the carpets and headliner.
Lysol disinfecting spray works fantastic
The secret benefit of a HEPA cabin air filter is that the inside of the windshield glass stays clean far longer than with a regular filter.
I only replaced my cabin air filter once. Found it too expensive so I just wash it and reinstall. I decided to do the same thing for my house air conditioning system.
I change my cabin air filters yearly. My home A/C filter monthly. I'm known to smoke a cigar or two in my truck on occasion. There you go.
It's like the way we say Geuurrrrmany up here in Chinada.. Cheers.
The foam reminded me of the classic movie ‘The Blob’.
I’m a retired window cleaner and I knew one guy that would clean the windows of a business then go in and ask if they would like the windows cleaned
Excellent video. For 2009-2019's Ram 1500/2500/3500's if you do not have a cabin air filter, they can be added with a quick mod if you would like to do so.
For the house, i use a spray can adapter squeeze thing, can of lysol, turn ac fan on, and put can in ac duct by filter ,
IVE USED 409 ON MINE BEFORE. ITS AMAZING THE CRAP IT REMOVES FROM THE FINS.
We never had any issues with dirty and stinking cabin air filters until the invention of the damn thing.
Not sure how we all survived without them!
Well thanks to watching your videos I also use the word Chinesium.
I've had a Model 3 for 3 years now, I've just been changing the cabin filters myself (using aftermarket HEPA filters). It was MUCH easier than I expected...I just have to take out a few clips in the passenger side floorboard, remove a panel, unscrew something, pull the filters out, put new ones in. Took me...maybe 5 minutes before I knew what I was doing.
As to your question...I would be fine with them charging labor IF they asked me if I wanted to check and/or replace the filters first. Otherwise...yeah I see your point. They shouldn't be doing labor without giving you costs upfront. It's all about honesty and disclosure.
I can't believe the Jeep dealership that I use for an oil change has never said a word about my cabin filter. I changed it myself and could not believe the debris I found. Anyway, thanks for reminding me Ray. It's been a year since I changed it last.
I worked at an oil change shop back in the early 2000s. Part of the oil change service was the labor required to check the filters, differential levels, tire pressures, top off fluids, etc. We didn't charge labor for the filter replacement-if you wanted a new one we charged the price of the filter which was based on our cost plus shop markup. Some services like serpentine belt replacement, fuel filter replacement, coolant exchange, transmission pan and filter service etc. were a flat price that included parts and labor. Some vehicles had a considerable profit margin and others we probably lost a little money on depending on the price of parts, quantity of fluids, or how big of a pain the job was. For instance, a transmission service on one car might be quick drop of the pan, filter, new gasket and fluid. Another might require removing a crossmember or transmission mount, and/or jacking up the transmission for clearance, cleaning off old RTV sealant, a more expensive parts kit, etc. That's why there was an incentive to maximize services sold because not everything was an easy moneymaker.
I feel called out about the cabin air filter... I've never changed one in my life hahaha
That cab filter just added 4071 horse power to your vehicle 😂
@Ray, I have to do something similar to my BMW 328i every year as rarely the smell comes from the filter which I change every year since I'm in there. On the BMW, it's much easier. While changing the filter, the filter door has a small hole and connecting hose you can snake the evap cleaner to. I just seal up around it with some hot glue which is easy to remove and dries very fast so the foam doesn't back it's way into the cabin. After that, you just empty the can and most of it will eventually drip out the evap drain as it converts itself back too liquid. Then like you, after letting the foam do it's work, I run the ac on low to permeate the cleaner smell through the vents. Last step is an air out and I'm good for another year.
I've often wondered about Usa, a city located in Ōita Prefecture, Japan. Made in Usa !
TGIF Ray. What a cheap cabin filter that vehicle had. Remember to have yourself a great day and weekend. 👍
