All about Nikasil- How & Why- Kevin Kinrade of Mongoose Machine
Kevin Kinrade was a major part of Mongoose Machine in Vancouver until 2021. Mongoose was the only place in Western Canada that offered Nikasil plating services & Kevin's father was one of the first in North America to offer the service.
In this conversation we talk about the process of re-plating a nikasil cylinder, different ways people can maintain their cylinders at home and then we got off the rails and talked about the nuts & bolts of the dirt bike business.
Mongoose carries a wide variety of parts like Rekluse, ProX, Innteck, SKF, Wiseco and lots more. Visit them online at www.mongooseparts.com or give them a call to talk to some of the most competent humans in the industry.

    I find your videos very simple and explained well. You can always prove your point by showing it in action; not many people do these days; they just run their mouths. Keep posting, I enjoy learning from you and expanding my knowledge on dirt bikes.

    I've worn out the clip a few times and had it come right off. The plate stayed on luckily. Yeah they are pressed on enough

    Interesting. I have never pulled the plate back out for tension on the clip. Have not had a problem. I set the plate at the same width as the rest of the links (veneer caliper) so the o-rings (x-rings) have similar squish.

    Yo chuck I commented on your nikasil plating video about my weird gritty put extremely even texture on a cylinder I just got done it doesn't even have a half hour on it, but has developed this sharpening stone like texture at were the rings are active

      The bolts are countersunk. Some other ones are not, but most dirt bikes use these.

    Thanks for the info! I have issue with mine, I set up an ok idle, after reving up it stay way high... if put in gear and slightly put load, than the idle is way to low and die. No admision leaks, played with jetting, needle, changed all sealings, etc... cant find the root cause...and is driving me crazy...

    • @ChuckfromTrueTech
      @ChuckfromTrueTech Před dnem

      Usually one of 2 scenarios. Either the pilot is too rich & the idle screw is turned way in to make it run or the pilot is too lean and causing it to detonate.

    Nikasil I don't hone but steel liners I do.I have been doing this since 1982 and it sort of freaked me out not to hone a cylinder.Nikasil I just give a good cleaning with contact cleaner and new rings always seat well.I talked to Millennium and u.s chrome about it years ago and they recommended not to hone unless you have the special diamond hone but not necessary as it's mainly used for fitting tolerance on a re plate.

    i just got my cylinder nikasil, done and a fresh piston not even broken in driven it around my yard, a few times done the ring gap as specified by the manufacturer, and the nikasil is all grainy looking and feels and looks like a gray wet stone for sharpening knives and the piston and rings look ok in comparison it has a few scratches it shouldn't have, does anybody know what i done wrong or could it be bad Nikasil i have never had any problems in the past with the company that does it they have done this cylinder once before and a few other bikes for me, usually the Nikasil has a gold tint to it, this time it looked like brushed stainless

      @@ChuckfromTrueTech ring gap 0.65mm, i can fit the top of a 0.45mm feeler gauge, between the piston and cylinder, the piston is vertex tm racing, B71.94, 22-08 32059, cylinder i could only measure with a digital caliper, i got between 71.99mm to 72.04mm

    Hey Chuck, great video thanks! I just 'blew up' my 22' 500exc engine from, according to KTM, riding on the highway for less than 1K miles over 6k miles total life (180 hours), at no greater sustained speed than 75mph for ~45minutes. They say, too little oil, bike was designed just to connect trails, like 5 miles on the road. My OHV parks are about 1 hour away and I need to do 75mph on the highway for safety. Do you think the Kove engine with it's higher oil capacity or other reasons would be no worries for my needs? I'm horrified by the idea that my 500 is so fragile (according to KTM) and am afraid to now do solo ADV in the middle of nowhere, risking non-driver based machine failure...

    • @ChuckfromTrueTech
      @ChuckfromTrueTech Před 5 dny

      75 mph is pretty fast, but that 500 is more than capable of travelling tens of thousands of miles on the highway. Don’t mix up what the dealer says vs what KTM says.

      @ChuckfromTrueTech in the rehluse book. It says to check the rubber isolaters by hand . I did. There was no movement.. however I put the inner hub back on to the input shaft and then tried to move it .. yes that's when I found alot of play in those rubber bushings . Like 1/4 inch play . I ordered rekluse bushings . Next week I get to see if most of my rattle goes away ...

    • @rotorhead5000
      @rotorhead5000 Před 5 dny

      I would say it's very dependent on where/what/how people ride, but mostly no, it's almost entirely a want. On the other hand, none of us need a dirt bike, but we want one (don't tell my wife that) so, my opinion is fairly neutral here.
