    • @SallyVanNuysMixedMediaArtist
      @SallyVanNuysMixedMediaArtist Před 5 měsíci

      Hi and thanks for watching. First, it’s not a great idea to work on a stretched canvas with oil and cold wax because the canvas has “give” and the cold wax could crack once it is fully dry. As far as layers, you can begin another layer as soon as the previous layer has set up to the point that the paint is not smearing under the palette knife or bowl scraper. That said, you decide when a layer is finished…if you don’t like what you just painted, you can move it around, add more paint, scrape paint back, etc. Once you’ve decided that layer is finished, then you wait for it to set up a bit before proceeding. Depending on the environment, this can take a few hours or a couple of days. You can add as many layers as you want, as long as you want. You could go back years later and add more layers if that’s what you want to do. It’s quite a wonderful medium to work with.

    Just wondering with that Stabilo All pen. I hadn’t heard of it so I clicked on your link. It says it’s a watercolour ink. Wouldn’t that work like the inktense pencils? They can’t be reactivated with water once dry. Looks like heaps of fun!

    • @SallyVanNuysMixedMediaArtist
      @SallyVanNuysMixedMediaArtist Před 6 měsíci

      Hi Robyn, the stabilo pencil is a very waxy pencil. It is water soluble (not watercolor, per se.) It feels like a crayon when it goes down. You can leave it as is on the surface or wet it with water to blend it out. It does stay moveable with water even after it dries, which can be a drawback, so I activate it with matte medium instead and that stabilizes it so if I want to use more water based products on my project, the pencil doesn’t continue to move or smudge. Otherwise, save the addition of stabilo for the last layer of a project. A little goes a long way…the black is really strong. But it can be layered as well. I highly recommend it. There are also colored versions (white, blue, red, and brown) and a whole color set of shorter fat pencils called Woodies, which are actually intended for kids, but work the same way. I also use Inktense pencils. Those really are more like watercolor pencils that dry permanent but feel more like a lead than the stabilo, which feel more like a crayon. Hope that helps explain it, and thanks so much for watching!

    • @SallyVanNuysMixedMediaArtist
      @SallyVanNuysMixedMediaArtist Před 7 měsíci

      It’s a shame…Michael’s bought out Darcie Crafts who made the Studio 71 products. The Darcie company (Pat Catans) warehouse was just 20 minutes from me, and you could go in and buy wholesale there with a vendors license. I could find some of the products in Michael’s and Walmart shortly after the buy out, but I think all that stock has been depleted. It still comes up in search, but it’s all sold out. We had a Pat Catans retail location very close to me too, where I bought painting supplies since the 80s. Since Michael’s converted that store, it’s so different and really doesn’t compare for art supplies.

    Hi Sally, I am so happy that I bumped into your channel today 😊. With regards to your idea of using modeling paste through a stencil to make a stamp - BRILLIANT. The way to fix the one that you made that is uneven is to either rub it very gently across sandpaper until it removes enough of the modeling paste to bring it all down or do the opposite and run your sanding block gently across the surface of the modeling paste until it becomes level. I am sooooo going to be making some stencil stamps very soon. I had been toying with the idea of using embossing powders to do sort of the same thing, but your way seems simpler.

    I don't know if it's a good idea to mix alcohol with the mineral spirits and resin in the cold wax? Did you research that first for toxicity and chemical reactions? WARNING: COLD WAX IS VERY FLAMMABLE!! DO NOT USE HEAT TOOLS ON COLD WAX!!

    • @SallyVanNuysMixedMediaArtist
      @SallyVanNuysMixedMediaArtist Před 7 měsíci

      Thanks for the concern…both products are solvent based so it is safe to mix them. They both contain resin, and cold wax can be mixed safely with mineral spirits. So, there are no problems with mixing. The only thing I dried with the heat tool was the initial acrylic layers, not the wax layer. Thanks for watching!

    • @SallyVanNuysMixedMediaArtist
      @SallyVanNuysMixedMediaArtist Před 7 měsíci

      Janet, thanks for watching! Varnishing is optional with cold wax. You can use a good quality varnish made for oil painting,mor when the painting is completely dry (can take up to a month) you can gently rub it with a soft cloth to buff up a soft sheen. I don’t varnish or seal the gold leaf…the plain cold wax does a great job of sealing it into the painting.

    I’m so grateful your video popped up in my feed because I enjoyed your attitude and your humor so much!! You approach art exactly as I believe we all should…. Just “try anything once and twice if you like it “…(if we can remember because I am certain I am older than you so I can empathize)… I’m sorry I can’t offer any advice because I just ordered some inks and will try when they arrive. Honestly, I watched the entire video and honestly enjoyed it. You definitely gave me ideas to try and “it’s not a big deal “ if I don’t like what I get…I can wipe it off and try a!! Plus, I won’t remember it after a day or two. Who am I kidding?? I won’t remember by supper time 😂😂😂 You are so creative and talented. I’d love to see your acrylic paintings. Your plates were so amazing!! The clear was SO COOL!! I’ve been doing oil painting and have also bought all the watercolor “stuff” but it’s completely opposite of what I’m used to doing. Hi Nancy! Your comment was a real treat for me. I think we are a lot the same (and I’m pretty old - let’s just say I grew up with a Formica and chrome kitchen table…LOL) I’m so glad you enjoyed the video and I’m sure you will enjoy playing with alcohol inks. I dabble in a lot of mediums, but I painted in acrylics for 40 some years and now I love doing portraits in graphite, too. Check out my playlists to see all the mediums I’m working in (excelling in…not always.) Art is play and should be joyful even if you call it a fail…otherwise, why do we spend so much money on art supplies? I also have all the watercolor stuff, but coming from acrylics, it’s so totally different that I have trouble letting it “do it’s thing.” Come visit my web site and Instagram if you’d like to see more of my art. And thank you so much for watching! ❤️

    Thank you for this video. Seeing the process is so helpful. I love Deb Weiers and your characters are wonderful. I will grab my tools and dive back into the wonky effort. You video helped alot.
