Windy Day Along The Trail in the Ocala National Forest.
A short video on a windy day. I had planned to do some cooking with my East German mess kit gear on a fire but decided it was not safe to have a larger fire with the conditions. We will try again soon.

Best method for cooking buckwheat I've come up with so far: 1:1.5 grain:water ratio. Fast boil for fiveish minutes lid on. Low enough that it doesn't try to burn to the bottom, hot enough it bubbles of rolls really good. Kill the heat, insulate pot as much as possible (blanket, reflectix bubble wrap, whatever just don't melt your sleeping bag trying this) Let sit for 30min. Works for rice (1:1.75 water for white) etc too. Saves you fuel and it comes out as perfectly as if you did it in a rice cooker.

John, I think more needs to be said about the M84 canteen. I have two of these. They are very nice, strong and solid. It's a pity that there are no factory lids for the aluminum cups of these canteens. Aluminum foil is fine in a home kitchen, but in the forest the wind tears the foil off the cup. There must be a solid lid for cooking in these cups. You will never find out what plastic these black M84 bottles were made of. My own research on burning a piece of plastic shows that it is some kind of polyethylene (HDPE?). Surprisingly, the M84 bottle can easily withstand being filled with boiling water (100 degrees C) and, when tightly screwed on, it remains tight in any position. However, for me the M84 bottles are not suitable for use with pleasure. These bottles don't smell, they just smell terribly of some kind of chemicals (although I scrubbed and rinsed the bottles with large amounts of water dozens of times). Also, water kept in these bottles for half an hour or more acquires a disgusting taste (BPA?? Probably something else; BPA itself does not smell so noticeably). I DO NOT RECOMMEND these bottles for frequent use 😕

Thanks John for the info. I have one of the 1930's to 40's kits, (888) on the fry pan made by Wearever, but none of the pots or fry pan has the boy scout emblem on them. The cover has a plain snap but also has two flaps on the inside that also snap together. Again no BSA markings on the cover. I also have one of the steel ones but with no cover. I love that fry pan, very heavy duty.

More information about the soviet obr.36 messkits. They used a variety of bales including ones similar to the German ww2 and NVA ones on pre and wartime models and into post ww2 production. the brownish paint seen on the example shown here was only used post ww2, ww2 models used a much greener paint and grey paints or no paint at all. The information about Soviets not attaching their messkits to their haversack is not entirely true, however the messkit was designed to be placed into a cover with loops sewn into and them it was attached via equipment straps to the ranyets rioksak (obr.36 haversack). However this practice was only done pre/early ww2 and the reemergence of the myeshok haversack meant they stored it in the bag itself.

This design of water bottle and carrier is not easily accessible. Is that deliberate ? I've read that some armies had a 'procedure' where things such as drinking could only be done when ordered etc. or it's to stop soldiers taking a drink when they should be paying attention to their surroundings etc. Or maybe it's just bad design ! It's going to bounce about a lot and make a lot of noise as well ! Adrian: UK/England

Mr Sherwood, I love your lantern, I have an 02-75 just like it! It was my parents & set me off on collecting coleman lanterns. I also wanted to say I took my xiegu g90 out to a park yesterday & had my first pota activation. Your ham radio videos piqued my interest in that rig, more so than many other videos specifically about that rig! Keep up the good work, I enjoy your videos & I also appreciate how your interests on your about page align right down the list with mine. I do prefer a canoe though. 😊

Thanks for your comment. I have slowed my video posts way down because of my schedule. In the lantern world, I'm currently working on rebuilding a 1970s Tilley X246B kerosene lantern. Just need to order a new pump. Look it up on youtube. It's a unique lantern the way its lit. In the ham radio world, I have been busy with my ham radio clubs. We had a event last saturday at a local park where we set up our portable radios. Here is a link a video on my buddy's channel on that event:czcams.com/video/_gj9NDYvpMc/video.htmlsi=dx6BrxJkJiDBLYA3 His channel has a lot of our club events that I'm in. I also set up my G90 a couple of weeks ago at a state park in N. Florida called Fort Clinch State Park. Got 16 contacts in less than 30 mins on 20 meters. Radio is so much fun!

It will work. It's not as nice and comfortable as the modern packs but it will work if you lengthen the shoulder straps a bit like I did. If you want to sport a vintage old school pack for a quick daytrip on the trail, this one is functional. But, using it as a weekend pack is pushing it.

I was looking for some ASMR/relaxing hiking video and I stumbled on this one. It's not really ASMR, but since you're showcasing the "Musette F2"... This is the F2 day pack (day pack == "musette" in french military terminology), issued from the 90's to the late 2K's. For 2 or 3 days autonomy or cold environments, there are bigger packs called "Sac F2" with volume about 70 liters. I trained with their "F1" very similar predecessors in the 80's. The "strange thing" @ 9:10 is for a rifle grenade. You can reuse it to hold a camera triplod. The other bottom straps are for a poncho.

My newest sheath knife that I have had for a while is the BPS Knives Adventurer. It's been a good one for me so far. The knife and sheath are well made. Comes extra sharp and seems to hold an edge good. For pocket knives I carry a variety of different ones. Depends on my mood. I like old Boy Scout knives, Case, and the good Buck pocket knives. But the one I carry the most is an Opinel No 8. I dont know why, but I like it. The high carbon steel sharpens right back quickly and you can lock the blade open or closed.
