COVID-19 and the brain...and what you can do about it!
COVID-19 is an emerging, rapidly evolving situation. This includes our understanding of it's effects on the brain. However, a range of neurological effects have already been observed and many potential mechanisms have been hypothesised. Time will tell how frequently the novel coronavirus attacks the brain in COVID-19 patients and how severe the consequences will be. Additionally, we will not be able to quantify the potential long-term effects of the virus on the brain until years into the future.
Today I explore some of the potential mechanisms of damage to the nervous system by infection with SARS-CoV-2 that have been proposed so far, which can be broadly grouped into two categories - indirect and direct. We will see how parallels can be drawn between COVID-19 and many of our top chronic diseases, and how this might inform how we can combat these neurological effects in the event that we do become infected.
But remember, the only way to ensure we avoid most of these neurological effects remains avoiding the virus altogether.
I will also touch on some nutrients that I think are of particular importance in COVID-19. There is a lot to cover in this video and it has turned out to be quite long even with my best attempts to stick to just the essential stuff, so I have added timestamps to each section below for easy navigation. I have also referenced many of my past videos to back up my points, or this video would have gone on forever! The links to these past videos referenced with timestamps are also provided here if you would like to follow up further:

Since this disease has only been with us for around a year and there is no way many of the hypothetical mechanisms of neurological effects can be validated and quantified yet, I have weighted this video towards a qualitative analysis of COVID-19 brain effects. I think it is too early to call how common neurological sequelae are going to be - they could be relatively uncommon, but conversely they might turn out to be far more prevalent than they seem even now. Out of an abundance of caution, I will restrict the discussion to an outline of mechanisms with less reference to burden of disease.

Manganese is a trace element required in small amounts for normal functioning. You mentioned in the video that other forms have their place such as for pernicius anemia.... I have pernicious anemia and have just purchased cyanocobalamin. My understanding is that since it is sublingual it bypasses the digestive system which renders the gastrtitis and lack of intrinsic factor irrelevant. Am I correct? I tried methlycobalmin for about 2 months and it helped in the beginning, but i noticed some symptoms returning and switched to cyan upon learning that cyan converts to all the needed forms. Again, am i correct about the pernicious anemia and should i continue to take my sublingual cyanocobalamin?

    People aren’t saying that the cyanide in Cyanocobalamin is dangerous… and they don’t even say that it is bad for everyone. Bioavailability is not the biggest concern either. What people are saying is that 15% of people are unable to methylate this synthetic form of B12 and this causes an increase of it doesn’t matter how much you put in, and in fact more can be worse. For people that are unable to methylate the vitamins, their body produces something called HOMOCYSTEINE and having an elevated amount causes severe symptoms in the body and neurological disorders. It can produce symptoms mimicking ADHD, OCD, High Blood Pressure, Anemia, and there are some examples of mental disorders like Bipolar mania being triggered from this. This B vitamin may not be overly harmful to 85% of the population, but 15% of the population has genetic variations that won’t allow them to methylate this vitamin correctly, and that is a massive problem. 15% of the population equals out to more than a Billion people worldwide and around 54 Million Americans in the USA… If you’re going to address this issue, do it correctly.

    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5312744/ Supplementing with any of the nature bioidentical forms of B12 (MeCbl, OHCbl, and/or AdCbl) is preferred instead of the use of CNCbl, owing to their superior bioavailability and safety. For the majority of the population, all B12 forms may likely have similar bioavailabilities and physiological effects; thus, it makes sense to employ the least-expensive form of B12, such as MeCbl. Individuals with particular single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) affecting B12 assimilation may raise their B12 status more efficiently with 1 or more particular forms of vitamin B12. However, because those types of SNPs are not currently reported in commercial tests, individuals may require either a trial-and-error approach by supplementing with 1 particular form of B12 at a time, or they might simply use a supplement with a combination of all 3 naturally occurring forms of B12 that are commercially available for a better chance of achieving faster clinical results. That approach may or may not offset genetic polymorphisms involving B12 metabolism and related pathways.

    So meat just doesn't exist in this timeline of the video 😂

      There is no justification for eating meat to get B12 when there are perfectly viable supplemental options, and B12 deficiency is absolutely epidemic in lifelong meat-eaters.

      Oh that's a great spot, that's the first carrageenan-free one I've seen! It has life'sOMEGA and is very generously-dosed. You've found a great one there for sure, I might look into getting it myself!

    I took 100micro grams per day for years, plus fortified foods, and I ended up severely B12 deficient. Just had to have B12 shots. Not everyone absorbs at the same level. In addition to the shots I'm temporarily taking 1000micrograms per day for 12 weeks until my next blood test. If all is nearing normal I will continue with at least 300per day to see how that maintains. It was quite a shock to see how low my level was.

      Yes this certainly can still happen, that's why I make sure in these videos to emphasise the importance of getting your status checked every once in a while even with a regimen that is likely to provide adequacy - which is exactly what you have done. B12 injections will replenish your levels very quickly, sounds like you're on the right path now, well done!

    How much vitamin B 12 should I take I am 83

      @DrDesHarrington Před 5 měsíci

      Depends on lots of factors, at that age megadosing is the most sensible once you have established that you already have a good functional level and do not need replenishing. See more on dosing strategy here: czcams.com/video/WjSdALh1YVE/video.html

    Your recommendations see suspect given that you are recommending the version of B12 which breaks down into cyanide when there are 2 other forms which do not do this.

    • @DrDesHarrington
      @DrDesHarrington Před 5 měsíci

      The amount of cyanide in these supplements is physiologically insignificant. Check out my other B12 videos for more on why I recommend cyanocobalamin!
