Preordered it! Excitedly waiting!
Enjoy! :D

I can't even count how many times I pull up Dr. Harrington card and send people to your genious videos on different topics regarding vegan health! Your stuff is really something special. You talk about things that no other plant based doctor talks about. And you deliver them in a way even anti-vegans wouldn't be triggered that much! AWESOME!
Now we know that Dr. Greger has the typical handwriting of all doctors: basically freehand swirly pictographs 😂
Haha I wonder if pacing on the treadmill had anything to do with that?
😊 I noticed too.

Quite possibly the greatest Christmas sweater ever knit into existence. Keep it, you must. (also, great video!)
Haha I love it, wash it at 60 I did though and stretched it has become! :( Thanks! :D
You are hilarious and I would like to take up knitting again now.
To Dr. Harrington; you've been through the wars and all the more respect due you for speaking out. Who knew this book would engender this flurry of controversary?
Clicked for the Star Wars Christmas sweater, stayed for the review. I'll check it out when it comes out.
You won't be disappointed! May the Force be with you!
Thank you. Somehow I haven't come across this channel before, have subscribed to it just now. Like many people I'm a long time admirer of Dr. Greger, have a copy of the book in my lap now, it's just been delivered. Before tearing the clear plastic wrap suddenly thought to search for a review of it and found this video. Indeed the book seems to be just as expected. I'm pleased to watch the enthusiastic positive review. Thanks.
100% agree the over emphasis on exercise over diet.
Don’t forget the audiobook read by no other than Dr Greger.
It's pervasive!
Dr. Des please add a Vitamin D video to your excellent vegan nutrition catalogue. For Vitamin D there seems to be an especially great amount of confusing information online. Your videos are most enlightening in application of a vegan diet. i prefer your presentation style to most others. As a vegan for only 1.5 years I had only known about a vegan's need to track and supplement B12. I now regularly eat: nori seaweed for iodine, pumpkin seeds for zinc and natto for K2. I hope to further tune my diet. Great thanks.
Hello, delighted to hear you've found the videos useful and thanks so much for the feedback! Sounds like you've got your micronutrient strategy on-point, always great to see vegans taking such a pro-active interest in keeping themselves healthy! :D I've just started my series on vitamin D, check it out! Here's the link to the first installment:

Yeah, I bought the book. I agree it's fantastic book, the online citation reference was so good. Have you started implementing any of the stuff with yourself? I'm video logging my results with the book, and so far I have to admit I'm very impressed. only 8 days in.. 11 pounds lighter. I know a lot of it is water from far less sodium and processed stuff. but it makes an amazing difference, and besides that my strength just increased on my lifts.. I love the whole foods plant based approach.
Hello, I just subscribed, you have some very impressive results! Yes, I live all aspects of the WFPB lifestyle myself! :D What is your strength training style?
You should be paid for promoting Greger's stuff! ;)
Great to have some informed advice, adding the book to my Christmas list. Thanks a mil.
Five thousand references!? Wow! Some of those tips sound interesting, like positioning your bed. Never heard of that.
Nice to see you back! Happy Holidays!
Are you overweight?
Thanks! :D Yeah there are a few unusual ones in there, for sure! Happy Christmas!
wow it's true - MDs do have ugly handwritting! but Dr. Greger has a heart of gold! thanks for the review
Haha, let's just say he has doctor's handwriting! Glad you liked it! :D
I’ve been waiting to order the book for a while, downloaded an eversion already. The Daily Dozen app has been a great help to me, especially after I started cutting back my meat eating - now mostly meat-free. His videos are always entertaining, going back to his time with his work in epidemiology. I’m always having to hit Pause because of his phrasing. Great review!
Thanks for the feedback, too much coffee! :D
Cutting off bad habits is harder than adding new healthy habits
I thank you for this review; did due diligence regarding the vegan community as we have come to know it; 2 of its best exponents, your countrymen the twins the Happy Pear have built up a community in the place of their birth and defy my sister's definition of an Irish AA meeting; she is still looking for leprechans (sp) and in many ways remains my hero: but quote "they couldn't have been sober they were too happy", which makes sense after Scotland. :) There is an American (there's always an American) person with a website who still hasn't got through the book (War and Peace was twice as long) and faults Michael Greger with excessive distance. The whole point of real research is to find the best studies and change the conclusion when new information becomes available. Being Vegan is not a religion; it's a considered way of life and this kind of science is just now coming into its own and an exciting time for people in this field. So once again, many tx indeed.
Thanks for your kind (and very funny) comment! :D Yeah I love the Happy Pear, I actually met them at a conference for plant-based healthcare professionals a few years ago! Do you do any writing online? You should definitely do some writing online! It's certainly not your standard diet book, but when it comes to diet I always say that we need as many different voices as possible speaking out - and this book might just have struck the right chords with some people out there, while as you say being too long for others. I think we need all kinds of voices delivering their message, indeed that's what inspired me to start this channel!
I don't need to lose weight, but will perhaps give it a listen anyway.
Absolutely, even if you have no intention of losing weight there'll still be lots to be learned from this book!
I'm bemused by the storm of controversy this book has raised, and that's bad and that's good. I don't need to lose weight but I want to remain healthy, for my dog, my sis, my partner, my beloved friends.
That's what I call a Christmas Sweater!
Haha I love it! :D
Des surly your on the books of RTE... definitely a late night or teens news ancor 😄 have both books great reads
Haha thank you! Yes he certainly knows how to distill his online personality on to paper; very easy to read!
It's good to see you back!
Is there enough other useful content to justify somebody who doesn't need to lose weight buying this book?
Thanks! :D I would say yes, there's stuff in here on time-restricted feeding, Chronobiology and sensible things you can do every day and habits you can change without changing your diet that can help prevent weight gain in the long run.
@@DrDesHarrington Thanks. I'll get it. I have been interested in chronobiology for many years. It'll be good to catch up with the latest research.
I don't need to lose weight but am mindful of visceral fat and not dying before my dog.
Great review. I love Dr Greger. I will use your video to send to friends to encourage them to buy his book. Good job 👍
Thanks very much for the support! Dr. G is the man!
You are conciseness MACHINE!!! :)))
I wholeheartedly approve of the jumper! 😀

@@mikeskylark1594 Yes, I'm in a much better position with work now and stuff (and the pandemic is nearly behind us!) so I'll be back with the weekly uploads once more! :D

Is it possible to go to sleep hungry at 11pm?
Or are we supposed to sleep after dinner at sundown, as our ancestors did?
I think there are a lot of benefits to having your last meal of the day a few hours before bed, if the hunger stops you from sleeping then the cons would obviously outweigh the pros, though! I suppose it's all about finding the balance that's best for you. :)
Bail ó Dhia.. can general blokes make sense of the content of the book or would you need to be a knowledgeable bloke to make head or tail of it?
Absolutely, it's very easy to read! :)
nice
Thanks! :D
Have u ever reviewed any of DR Mc Doughall’s diet? Far simpler
When I transitioned to a fully plant-based vegan diet, for ethical reasons as well as not wanting to predecease my dog, I did a lot of research. Dr. McDougal's protocol is simpler; it was developed originally for people suffering from serious heart conditions. My Godfather, my Dad's best friend was not enthusiastic about this but his wife loved him with all her being and he was full of life into his '90s. I admit to a sense of impatience with people who want quick solutions; yes I have read this book, there is nothing arcane in it; War and Peace was twice as long and Greger isn't being prescriptive; idealistic perhaps because if we all ate this way the military complex in the US could expand as health care costs went down ……. but in the meantime, who cares how long we live as long as our lives are meaningful and active and we just die in our sleep when our time comes.
@@evelynbaron2004 Who are these people that find these diets to be effective? What are they doing different?
Here is how this typically works for me:
1. I start the diet eating plant based, whole foods. No added fats. Lots of added vegetables.
2. The diet is fine for a while and I definitely start eating less because vegetables are unappetizing. Until...
3. I find myself hungry at an inconvenient time and then eat something I'm trying to avoid.
4. Enter the "What-The-Hell" effect and the subsequent cascade of hunger.
5. All progress is lost.
6. There is nothing in McDougall's or Greger's books that overcomes the unappetizing nature of vegetables. They both have great theories that consistently fail me in practice.
👍
Howdy! :D
Unfortunately i had to dislike this video because its not review, but a
blind praise. Although i don`t refute that main idea of increasing food
intake of plants is fine in general population, its great omission not
to include that the book is strongly biased towards exclusively whole
plant based diet. To the extent that it omits rather important food
groups like fish, and underestimates some health risks of whole food plant based diet.
You yourself started as "does it deliver facts". Thу real answer would be
"Yeah, kinda", and not definitive yes, that you gave in your review.
No worries man, I was kinda new to doing reviews and I read that a review should focus on your subjective opinion rather than objective metrics, so that's how I approached it rather than my usual method of critical appraisal of the subject matter at hand!
Thanks for the update Des! Got my book coming today ;D
We have a WFPB discord community if you want to come hang out some time - discord.gg/DAj8gME
Enjoy! Thanks for the link, I'll swing by for sure! :D
It is so funny, 1000's of lean vegans which do not need to lose weight say how good this book is to lose weight.
it's because they already eat the way the book tells you to.
Haha yep, lots of us are aware of Dr. Greger's content, but not everyone is and hopefully this book will introduce healthy eating to a whole new cohort! :D
@OZSA87
Yes, but a skinny vegan does not need to lose more weight nor use any hacks that make people lose weight. The book makes only sense for overweight people.
@@happygimp0 Very few people are carrying an ideal amount of visceral fat. Of those that are, many only maintain it through a substantial amount of daily effort. The book details many ways that people can improve their health with the same or less effort than before.
I don't think long term lean vegans are interested in weight loss; the title is how not to diet. Michael greger is the ultimate geek -- and I do mean that in a good way; anything to be learned, inquire within.
his and your recommendations give me anxiety.. Mcdougall made veganism doable but you guys are making it seem impossible.. why is this? dont you think if all these supplements and rules were important that Mcdougall would have come across it in his years of having so many patients? Ill forever feel like im deficient now and will never feel comfortable recommending veganism to my mates, such bullshit man if only you guys didnt exist id still be feeling like a champ
I understand where you're coming from, my concern though and the main reason I was motivated to make videos is that there is a huge amount of people turning vegan these days for a variety of reasons and I just want to do what I can to help make sure this transition is done as healthfully as possible. If you take a _laissez-faire_ attitude towards turning vegan without paying attention to looking after yourself you're asking for trouble.
I want to create a resource I can direct people towards for any concerns they have about this diet to try and make it as easy as possible, but unfortunately it's not completely fool-proof and you do need to take certain precautions to make the diet sustainable for life. Overall, it's a lot simpler to make small changes to a vegan diet now to make it as healthy as possible than to have to make much bigger changes later in life to treat chronic disease as a result of a standard Western diet pattern and lifestyle!
@@DrDesHarrington but by doing that you are just preventing people from going or staying vegan at all and making those who are vegan just feel deficient and anxious and depressed.. nobody is going to follow all of these rules.. as a doctor you should know this.. you arent thinking of the whole picture here.. cant we just eat whole foods and be healthy and happy like i have done for the last 6 years.. why cant you just tell people to eat whole foods and avoid refined products as much as possible instead of making it seem practically impossible to be vegan? the people at veganhealth.org do the same shit man.. if we cant be healthy vegans without following all these rules then i cant be vegan because its 2 much effort 2 have to pay so much attention to what we eat and it feels horrible having to take more than 1 supplement.. Dr Mcdougall doing fine.. just because you are ok with eating out of an instruction manual and popping a bunch of pills that doesnt mean everyone else is.. very few people are willing to switch to a diet that is so complicated.. since when was being vegan for nerds only.. its not fair man everyone should be able to go vegan and it shouldnt be so ridiculously complicated because if it truely is as hard as you all make it out to be then very few people should be vegan at all and that just isnt right..
There is an American guy who has a vegan channel Well Your World you might connect with; he feels the same way. I respect him but I don't need the world simplified. There are no rules in this book. Unwillingly McDougall has become a kind of guru; the last thing in the world Michael Greger would ever aspire to.
@@evelynbaron2004 ill check him out, i dont get how you guys can feel good taking all these supplements and having to eat all these random foods everyday, sets off alarms for me when the only way to get enough of certain nutrients is to eat 1 particular food eg seaweed, brazil nuts and ground up flax seeds plus/ or take certain supplements everyday.. Greger is the biggest Guru out there imo.. he has medical training but he hasnt had 1000's of patients like Mcdougall let alone 1 so he doesnt really have and blood tests or experience to base his claims all he does is parrot studies and what seems like scare mongers people into buying his "how not to die" books.. ive been vegan 6 years and now i dont wanna do it anymore because of all these instructions its shit man
@@VeganChiefWarrior You have to realize that omnivorous people are presented with similar dilemnas. They have many different diet gurus claiming they have the answers- "just eat Paleo and no grains or dairy", "just eat keto and no carbs", "just stay gluten free".. etc. In veganism we have the raw vegans, the no oil/no nuts/no avocado camp, the Dr. Greger adherents, the Starchivore McDougallers, people doing low carb vegan. Instead of trying to listen to all of them, take what works for you- leave the rest. As long as you feel well, you have bloodwork checked every once in a while and that looks good then why change what you're doing?
Just curious was this an unbias review?
No such thing. The right question for me would be; how much knowledge does this reviewer have and is there a 3rd party funding this opinion. Answer for me is; lots of knowledge and nobody is paying him.
Lol
ofc not he's obviously biased since he's vegan himself.
Not helpful 😒
Skip the book and do keto
