Busy spring arrival in Portoroz with a DOVA DV1 Skylark
A short one today, showing the final part of the approach into Portoroz (Slovenia) and landing on RWY 15. You can enjoy the low altitude flying on the Slovenian coast with its picturesque towns, as we try to stay clear of the VFR traffic.

STRONG WINDS FORCE A DIVERSION IN DV1 SKYLARK
zhlédnutí 740Před 3 měsíci
Join us today as we return from Warsaw Poland (EPBC) to Brno Czech Republic (LKTB). Forecasts called for strong cross-winds so we filed a FPL with an alternate airport..."just in case". Well it turns out, diverting to our alternate choice was the right thing to do, after attempting two approaches in strong gusty cross-winds and deciding to opt for our alternated Medlanky (LKCM). DOVA DV-1 Skylark landing at Mariazell: a short, sloping runway surrounded by high terrain!

Today we are landing at Mariazell, a well-known GA Airport located in the Austrian Alps. The views during the VFR approach are incredible, and well worth the challenge: the airfield only has a 500 meters (1640ft) runway, with a displaced threshold and a slight slope. And yes, it's in the Alps so high terrain all around! The DOVA Skylark DV1 is in her element and handles beautifully the approach...

    Was this an IFR flight? How much freedom is there to do a flight like this in the EU?

    • @skylarkpilot
      @skylarkpilot Před 3 měsíci

      It was VFR. I filed an alternate just for good measure but you are not required to do so for VFR flights, and I could have diverted pretty much to any other airfield open to civilian GA flights.

    To clarify the “Unable” you hear at 2:45 - I am comfortable with short approaches, especially at my home airport, however on this day I chose to perform a regular pattern. I wanted to get a feel for the winds on final and how the ACFT would handle the crosswinds at slower speeds. 😊

    • @dkoleary88
      @dkoleary88 Před 3 měsíci

      Totally understand. I would also decline short approach with such winds

    Great video! Beautiful approach on RWY26 (ha, a section of the river prior at a distance looks like the runway, wonder if a VFR flight has ever made that mistake) - which leads me to ask about the intention to land RWY08? Is that the normal wind direction or other reason?

    • @skylarkpilot
      @skylarkpilot Před 9 měsíci

      You are absolutely right about that river optical illusion. I myself had it for a moment, since this was my first time flying into LOWI. But then you squint a bit and double check your gps and soon realise you need to fly a little longer to spot the runway. Regarding my expectation for RWY 8, the reason is very simple: when I briefed the weather on the ground Innsbruck was reporting light winds from the east.

  • @theflyingcircus2070

    Hi, thanks for the videos. A question if I may, is 40° your preferred flap setting for a 'normal' landing? Compared to my previous experience on a C42 I've noticed the Skylark comes in pretty flat with 20°.

    • @skylarkpilot
      @skylarkpilot Před rokem

      Thanks for the comment! I prefer to come in with 40 degrees flap especially on shorter runways. If the conditions are a bit gusty however, I like to keep a bit more speed on final and stay on flaps 21. Also, it will depend how old are the skylarks you’ve flown: the modern ones like mine registered under ELSA have a higher MTOW of 600kg or 1320 lb. as opposed to the older models limited to 450kg. Lastly, you need to account for the different flight characteristics of a high wing vs. a low wing. 😊

    • @skylarkpilot
      @skylarkpilot Před rokem

      Thanks. Something rather simple: the engine coolant reservoir had a crack. Under pressure, the coolant spilled all over the engine bay, and when in contact with the hot exhaust and other hot components it generated that white smoke. The mechanics at DOVA quickly changed the reservoir for a new one, cleaned up the engine, and I flew away with no issues just an hour later.
