    Man, I remember the game gear game and JP2TCC for SNES as I grew up playing these two. I’m actually surprised most don’t like the chaos continues. I didn’t think it was bad, it was just unforgiving. But I guess most JP games were. Fact is, games of the past were a different breed. You had to devote time to even learn some of them, others… you needed the guide. That’s just how it was. There were plenty of games I had that I never completed, but I do remember beating the GG game as I studied the hell out of it. Memories. Damn. * also of note: in canon there was supposed to be an indigenous people who lived on the island before it was purchased and they were relocated. Also of note I am not sure *when* this was established to be the case in the larger franchise timeline. It was only ever touched upon in various media. So not entirely out of place, but still, it does not feel right in Hammonds park. Feels like he’d bulldoze that stuff.

    I really like your videos! Found your channel from the sagebrush review, and was excited to see that game getting some recognition, I have loved it for so long but it has gone under so many peoples radar! I do have a few recommendations if you care for those, if not that is okay, they all give me a little bit of the same feel that Sagebrush gave me, and just like Sagebrush they are some of my favorite games, not just in horror although most of them put emphasis on atmosphere and the psychological. The Space Between My absolute favorite next to Sagebrush, a very surreal game about connection and getting close to someone, I gives so many questions that it leaves open, and every time I've seen someone play it they have a completely different Interpretation than me, and it always makes me look at it differently, you don't know who is speaking or even who you play as throughout. Letters to a friend Farewell: Also a Christoph Frey game, also very experimental, where you play as a notary sent to a house of a man whom just lost his father and want to sell the house, it's made to feel like a silent film, so there isn't much audio, but there are some audio ques that hit when the tension is at the biggest, and it feels so tense, staying in the home of a man you barely know who seem a little shifty, and the attic you have been told not to go into. A hand with many fingers: A conspiracy game about an actual real conspiracy that you have to uncover, about the Nugan Hand Bank, you need to find references in terms of names, locations and year, then go to the archive room where florescent lights sometimes flicker while looking for a box with evidence to your case. Of course this is a conspiracy game so you might start to think you are being watched, from the floor creaking even though the place was closed for the night, and the steps sounding like they come from upstairs but could also be right beside you, stealing the box of evidence you are looking for, and a car conveniently parked across the street under a lamppost with clear sight into your board room where all your progress stands. Those are a few of my favorites they all have phenomenal atmosphere, and would love for more people to check them out.

      Another game I forgot to mention that has very little horror but still just gives me all the feelings of a great game is Road 96 A game that takes inspiration from the worst aspects from more or less all the biggest countries, prison labor camps, North Korean worker transfer tests at the border, an economy based solely on oil and not giving many if at all any resources to their own people, a corrupt government and even more corrupt state run news agency etc. In the midst of all of this is you, a random teenager trying to cross the border for whatever reason you have, and thats your goal, to safely make the trip of nearly 2000 miles of road to get to 'drumroll please' Road 96! Which is maybe the only road out of Petria left. There are many different characters you can meet and it all depends on how you want to get across the country, hiking, walking, taxis, busses or even stealing a car! There are some events you have to encounter for the story to take place but it all feels very organic and there are plenty of choices to be made both for your own story but also for the people you come across. It also has one of the best soundtracks I have heard for any game and I can't stop coming back to the game here and there.

    Kinda funny to see how people getting back to the idea of "capital is bad", like its a revelation: Capital is said by a Quarterly Reviewer to fly turbulence and strife, and to be timid, which is very true; but this is very incompletely stating the question. Capital eschews no profit, or very small profit, just as Nature was formerly said to abhor a vacuum. With adequate profit, capital is very bold. A certain 10 per cent. will ensure its employment anywhere; 20 per cent. certain will produce eagerness; 50 per cent., positive audacity; 100 per cent. will make it ready to trample on all human laws; 300 per cent., and there is not a crime at which it will scruple, nor a risk it will not run, even to the chance of its owner being hanged. If turbulence and strife will bring a profit, it will freely encourage both. Smuggling and the slave-trade have amply proved all that is here stated. Capital. Karl Marx. 1867. Quoting "Trades' unions and strikes: their philosophy and intention" 1860 At least since XIX century, this idea is floating in the air and people who put it into the words are deemed as worst of the worst. Yes, I had to put the whole quote.

      I don't think the witness is pretentious - I think it's earnest. The Marvel thing of needing to undercut every touching moment with a witty remark is fine, but not everything needs to be that. I remember reading/watching/hearing someone say that South Park taught an entire generation that caring about things and being sincere is the least cool thing you can do. It's stuck with me because it feels kinda true. But we need art that is achingly sincere. The Witness took 7 years or something to make. That's a mind boggling amount of time to be working on a single thing. It should take itself seriously. At the same time, The Witness isn't devoid of humour. I know I genuinely laughed out loud several times while playing (okay, it was more of a chuckle). It's not as funny as Braid, but Blow just has a knack for making puzzles that are jokes.

      @@monotonallizard Interesting. To me pretentiousness is all about the pretense. It's when someone doesn't actually believe the bullshit they're spouting - they're just doing it to impress people. If someone is completely sincere in what they're saying I would personally consider that almost the opposite of pretension, regardless of the actual content of what they're saying. But you admit to liking things you consider pretentious, so you must have a different take. What do you mean by pretentious?

    • @monotonallizard
      @monotonallizard Před 9 dny

      @@1337pianoman I would say pretentiousness is just ascribing greater meaning or importance to something than it actually possesses. There are certainly cynical examples like you're talking about, but I'd say those tend to be more corporate in nature - rampant nostalgia-baiting in big budget movies for example. I agree that the Witness is earnest, it's just lacking perspective in I way that I find obnoxious.

    This was a really solid look at the game! I played through the first game not that long ago, and had quite a similar experience. Though I found the higher-difficulty exploitative strategies for nights 6/7 to be fun in their own way, enough to make up for the lack of tension that breaking the AI causes. And I'm at a similar impasse - I was able to beat 4/20 in time for a refund, but I feel torn between wanting to toy around with the lets play bait of my teen years, and supporting a terrible dude. I know you said you weren't interested in future games, but I do think you'd offer a really solid perspective on future entries. Unsurprisingly most of the people who bother to cover the newer games tend to be devout fans/haters, and there's not much in the way of new perspectives critically breaking down the failing horror of the series. It's an issue I find myself thinking of a lot, and you touched on it here quite nicely.

      Thanks! I can't see myself doing a full look at the franchise, and I haven't played any of them other than the first, but from having watched people play through the later games I imagine I'd probably find things to like about 2 and 3 in terms of mechanics and presentation. 4 onward would be diminishing returns the more stagnated the gameplay became, the more convoluted the plot became, the more the tone shifted away from horror. And I'd probably give Security Breach a pass for at least trying something different.

    Tbh the unpredictable nature of guards and NPCs is sort of realistic. And it even happened in Hitman: Blood Money that on some high notoriety runs no one could recognise the literal international terrorist that got caught on camera shooting up a presidential parade. Yet, other times I simply launch the level and can't take 2 steps before some fat tourist's neurons synapse in time for him to get incredibly genre savvy and yell "Jesus Christ! it's that psycho killer from the TV! run for your lives!" as if he knows him and his wife are about to become a fucking statistic.

    Great game and I picked it up for £0.49 on PS Store so an absolute steal. However not implementing inverted Y-axis option made it very frustrating for me as I have to actively think how I look around which broke the immersion for me at times. I also think if the dev went for the deliberately lo-fi 3D aesthetic then a 4:3 aspect ratio would have worked better as would some CRT overlay to smoothen the graphics a bit. A game with this style of graphics when played on a big screen in a living room setting tends to be a bit grating on the senses to be honest. This is nit-picking though, the game is great.

I also found the general game design more competent than many of the 16- bit offerings. It's strange that they left this one off the Classic Games Collection as it's easily better than most of them. Must've been a Sega licensing issue.

    The fact that there ARE female guards, already breaks your point completely. If the game was sexist, they would ACTUALLY be only objects and stereotypes.

    Oh really? Communist commentary in a video game video? Enough. Gross.

    Thanks for covering all of these. I've only played the first and it's interesting to see where the series went after the first one.

    I came here for the rat, if I do not see a rat within the first minute I will dislike it and... (does that count as a rat?)

    You're a total legend, mate. It's clear that your vids are a real labour of love. Really hope you keep creating content and get the subs and views you clearly deserve. Top notch, as always.
