Barn Find Chevy Caprice NYC taxi!
Hey its Zach from 718 motorpool and today we have something really unique. A 1996 Chevy Caprice 9C6. This car was Built June 26th 1996 and delivered to Major Chevy in Queens on July 9th 1996. An owner operator cab driver purchased this car for 22762 dollars. Adjusted for inflation this would be roughly 43 thousand dollars today. Since then It went through 2 owners before it was discovered in yard a few weeks ago by my friend who was kind enough to let us check it out.
The 9C6 was the Heavy duty taxi package that chevy from the 70s until the early 2000s. The 9C6 is probobly one of the rarest options you can find today, granted thousands were made when the package was offered but these cars often lived very hard lives and the ones that survive are typically owner operator cars like this one was. I only know of a handful of these cars and I would have to estimate were looking at single digit numbers for suvivor cars.
The 9C6 option was an 831 dollar option that equipped the car with heavy duty componants similar to the 9C1 police package but without any of the performance upgrades. The dark blue vinyl interior with the split bench was standard This car was also equipped with the L99 V8 Engine putting out 200 Horsepower and factory wiring for the taxi sign. This package prepared the car to be able to function in a rough urban environment with little to no down time as many of these cars were run 24/7
As it sits right now is exactly how it was when it left service in 2001 and is a time capsule. Since it was an owner Operated car the standard Taxi partion was not required by the taxi and limosean commsion. The Fare decals on the front doors are from 2000 replacing the orignal Decals from 1996 reflecting a fare increase.
1996 would an interesting year for New York Taxi cabs as the TLC would make it a requirment that all yellow cabs be new vehicles with less than 500 miles before they got got hacked up. Later in 1996 the TLC would roll out the celebrity talking taxi program where you would be greeted with a recording of B list celebrities to remind you to buckle up when you entered the cab and reminded to take your belongings and reciept as you exited the vehicle. This was activated by a button on the dash This program was not well recieved by the general public and drivers alike but lasted until 2003.
The owners plan for this car is to restore it back to the way it was when it was hacked up in the summer of 1996 and keeping the original medallion number. This is to preserve a piece of New york city history as this was one of the last yellow chevy caprice taxis placed into service We will be getting updates throught the restoration process so subscribe and hit hit the bell for notifications to follow the restoration

New York City Transit Police roll out new Chevy Caprice RMPs for 1990
zhlédnutí 34KPřed 5 měsíci
In 1990 the NYC transit police started to rapidly modernize the department, Adding a fleet of brand new Chevy caprice police cars
Only problem with the Taurus as a cop car is that the biggest, most powerful engine was the least durable. If they'd had the 3.0 Vulcan V6 or even the 2.3 four those were much more durable but the Ford 3.8 sold a lot of Caprices and Impalas to PDs and Toyota Camrys to everyone else.
All plastic. All were crap
These were junk. Buttons stuck when dirty
The third gen ones and platinum were the best. The membrane keypads were terrible and didn’t hold up
The original medallion for this car is 1C81 not 4Y73. I saw this very car in person few years ago back when it was still in the yard in PA. Old owner told me it was used in a movie or tv show and that is why the medallion # was changed. I actually bought the metal medallion off this car that was bolted to the hood and I still have it. I reached out awhile ago regarding getting the original medallion back to the owner but don’t think I got a response
Buy it
Friend of min already did
@@The718Motorpool great!
Love this. Body. Style. ❤❤❤❤
My Mum's Uncle, who was a Taxi driver from the early 1970's up until 2000, kept his 1981 XD Ford Falcon sedan Taxi; his was ordered with the standard Ford Australia Taxi pack, except he was good mates with the local dealer and the car was ordered with a 351ci Cleveland V8 & Auto+ LSD. He has had it semi restored (400,000km kn the clock), has all the original lights & gear in it
I would love to see it. Did Australia have an actual taxi spec?
Great vehicle! I had a 79 Caprice and it was great. Have a short video on it.
I have a 90 caprice 9c1 that I’ll be making a video on sooner or later
The before and after on this car was really incredible. What a great piece of NYC history.
Can wait to do the after part
I had this one as a 1/18 scale model back then. Very cool find!
I think everybody had the 1/18th scale model back in the day lol
Seeing as it came from NYC, probably smells like a barn inside.
I think you meant bagel, there are very few barns in NY.
These are so cool, and came with many unique factory options as well! I’m the proud owner of a ‘98 Merc W202 that also served as a Lisbon cab for over 25 years with my dad always behind the wheel! Needless to say I’m prizing that car so much. It has reinforced suspension, a rear window curtain, and special reinforced seats.
I love weird fleet spec cars like that!
Cop shocks and everything 😂.
Did he say '97 but then it's a 93 model
Cars a 93 that was mocked up
I bet thats one of the few that was built as a taxi and not a converted police car
A lot of them were taxis from new. Owner/Operators put so many miles and depended on them, so they didn’t want to start with an already worn out car. And NYC made it mandatory for them to be new in the later 90s
New York City required them to be new sometime around 1994 or 1995 when Rudy Giuliani became mayor. This was part of his clean up of NYC. However, many operators bought new cars as this was their primary source of income
What’s the color code
No clue next time I visit my friend I can ask
It would be neat to just get it running well enough and drive it through the city, grime and all. I wonder how folks would react.
Thats terrible that so few have survived
Crazy cool find
never get caught
Amazing find. Hope it gets cleaned up. I remember seeing family pictures with these in the background
There's a lot of potential in that car!
So this was filmed about a year and a half ago. There is an update video coming.
I dont think that car was ever on the street
I don’t believe it was
Surprisingly they never used Chevy Lumima or Ford Taurus.
Love seeing the 90's caprice taxi's and police cars. Really defined the NYC landscape of that era. Seeing yellow Camry's in Manhattan is so boring
Is the Camry the most common model used now, or is it one of many? I read somewhere that the Prius is also common. And a few minivans.
@@moonbeamskies3346 Its one of many. Prius, Camry, Sienna, Rav4, Nissan NV200, Ford Transit are pretty much what make up the fleet now. Occasionally, you'll see a Tesla.
@@JayMalone26 Amazing how the Big 3 don't dominate the taxi market anymore.
Loved the glass headlights used in this car unlike today's plastic yellowing junk
So beautiful to see a great era of time in one video. The sunshine Yellow 1996 but the rare squares backs in the background are off the charts....
I see diamonds after one power wash....
I do have an update on this car as this video was filmed early last year
Nooo, that would take it's appeal 😥
Beautiful, Beautiful, beautiful.... Last rwd from Arlington, Texas...
that's fantastic news so are you gonna start a taxi business
Awesome!
Such a cool find! Amazing that so few of these have survived.
I know they're from NY but that accent is Boston. Weird.
Love the Taurus. Love the accent.
Oh man I would love to have that GMC RMP! Please go back in time and have that tow truck driver deliver it to my house... 😁
First patrol vehicle I ever drove in 1993. Drive a F-150 Responder and will retire driving it…. Drove Crown Vic’s, Torpedo Caprice’s, two models of Charger’s, and Explorers in-between. Explorer best pursuit with the Ecoboost V6…Responder most room. Department never bought a Tahoe.
That's a really cool paint job on the hood. I wonder what happened to this color changing paint technology? 2:07
Police Depawtmant...😂
My first agency had a car with an FS Vision with the three row version of this controller. The buttons were terrible. Very unreliable that they would detect a press and latch like. They were supposed to.
It amazes me that this light bar was on so many police vehicles because after 80 mph it had so much drag it was surprised that the Crown Vic could keep going
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't that first officer have more of a Boston accent?
@@stevenyou That was Chief Bratton who was originally from boston
“The front seats will be clad in cloth which is better than vinyl, more breathable, comfortable and more aesthetically pleasing than vinyl 100%; the rear seats that will transport prisoners will be vinyl” These videos are great!
Best. Caprice. Ever.
Miami Beach used them on their 1991 Caprice sedans -:)
I honestly thought they went right from the federal factory to sit on pallets for 30 years. Its rare to hear of agencies actually using these bars, Aside from someone else mentioning there use in PA I dont think ive heard of these used in any large numbers
Crazy to me that they were using Suburbans in NYC in the 1st place lol Surely there was a better option even before the Caprices
Probably had more to do with the Transit as a whole bought these trucks by the hundreds every year. Prior to those they had 1980 or 81 Gran Furies
It's always sad to see the twin towers still Standing knowing what's going to happen.🇬🇧😢❤️
It’s kind of weird that they never used the lightbar.
I wonder what happened to these vehicles after the absorption by the NYPD.
I believe all the 90s were long gone but the later caprices, and the crown vics were repainted and were in service until the late 90s
I remember when they had Crown Vic’s briefly when I was a kid and then went to the Impala really quick.
They did a split bid ford/chevy from 98-09
Old RMPs? Fugedaboutit
I Have 2 Caprice (Shoebox) Cruisers!!!! Both Are 1989 Models!!! One is White & 1 is Blue!!
