The Secret To Becoming A Better Painter Faster
From a young artist that is trying to rediscover a love for painting, thank you.
You’re welcome. Good luck, Greg.
Excellent demo! Thanks
Glad you liked it!
I just stumbled upon this video (4 years after the fact) while looking up pochade boxes; wow! I’m glad I found you! This video was awesome, you covered everything! I appreciate your calm manner and concise explanations, and I was blown away by the Heidelberg painting, and I love the little flower seedlings container! I’ve not seen this much description about plein air gear and set up anywhere; Thank you!!!
Thanks for your kind comment, you made my day! I’m happy the information helped.
Very helpful. I really liked the shades you chose. They look great in the finished composition.
Thank you so much!
My mineral spirits isnt settling clear, ive been waiting a while for it to...what do i do?
Sometimes the sediment will settle, but the mineral spirits is stained a bit. That usually happens to me when I use strong, staining colors like the phthalo blue or phthalo green. If this is the case, and the sediment has settled out, then it should still be fine to reuse the mineral spirits.
Truly helpful video, and lovely little painting! Thanks so much for doing this.
Thanks for tuning in!
thank u so much Mr. Scott. I was looking everywhere for someone who could teach nocturnes. i am so grateful u posted this video.
You’re welcome! I’m so glad I could help. Good luck with your nocturnes.
Love your videos.
I’m glad you do! Thank you very much for taking the time to leave me a comment and letting me know. Good luck in your painting.
Great Light effect!
Thank you!
Lovely
Thank so much! I'm glad you're here.
great video thank you.
Glad you liked it! Thanks for being here!
Ear plugs, head muffs, music---??? This made me laugh!😂
A little levity :-)
Why do you have the tips appear on the screen for such a short time? By the time you notice they're there, they disppear....frustrating as it could have been much more interesting.
Sorry about that. You can always double tap or left arrow to rewind 10sec and then pause to read. Thanks for your feedback.
Great painting
Thanks Sherry.
Nice video but why do you skip blending the sky and the trees ?
I didn't feel the need to blend. I like the freshness and energy of the un-blended paint strokes. It really is a personal preference. :-)
Scott, I really like that painting. When you said you were just gonna put a low bar in there no big deal it doesn’t have to draw away from your main subject. I said wow that bar looks pretty good. Thank you for the instruction. I appreciate it. Great work.
@@vickiescallan5651 thank you, Vickie 🙂
@@ScottRuthvenFineArt hi scott ty for the reply what i mean was why did you skip the adjustments you made at cetrain points for eg 5:15 and 5:59 theres the hardest parts i struggle with :/ gd video though not hating :)
Thank you for sharing! Very nice indeed.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Like to see what you're painting! Otherwise a great demonstration!
Beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
Paint the bright light on the ground
I like the wrong color. Brings it forward
Needs a little black at the bottom to spring the value forward
You might be right!
You are doing a good job!
Thank you!
I Like Nocturnes! They’re the ideal painting in my opinion because it’s so difficult to capture accurate representations of nighttime with photographs.
I totally agree and they offer a great deal of freedom for creativity.
HOW DO U TRANSPORT THE WET OIL PAINTINGS BACK,,, ESPECIALL IF U HAVE MORE THAN ONE.? I HAVE NOT FIGURED OUT A WAY TO DO THIS YET
I add fast drying mediums, like Galkyd Gel from Gamblin so the paintings are dry by the end of the week and I can stack and roll the loose canvases together. This isn't possible if they are wet. If I'm painting on rigid panels, I can safely transport 2 wet paintings face-to-face in a wet panel carrier. Find those here: www.panelpak.com Happy painting!
@@ScottRuthvenFineArt thats great... thankyou!
Nice painting! I've missed you.

What an excellent, fresh look at Plein Air! Thank you for this. It is March 1 and I am about to get busy with Plein AIr painting. I really enjoyed this. New subscriber , Can't wait to see more. Thank you Scott! - Gina in Western NC
Welcome Gina!! Thanks for taking time to write such a nice comment.
I just came across your video! I too am an oil painter and reside near the mountains of Alberta Canada. I love painting the mountains! Thank you for this video as I truly enjoyed this. I am a new subscriber and will watch the previous videos. Enjoy the Plein Air events!...Deb
Thank you again Scott. A wonderful painting and all kinds of excellent information. What really blows me away is when you painted the first mountain. The color on my computer was a deep robin's egg blue, but as you continued it changed to just the right value. This was so amazing to see.. Looking forward to the possibility of watching live. I clicked on the "all" notification so that should happen soon. Thanks again.
Thank you, Catherine. Proof that color is relative!!😊 It still amazes me too!
Thanks Scott - 2nd time I'm watching this one!
You’re doing some really good work, Jim!
Thanks Scott!
Just now learning about nocturne painting. This was helpful - thanks!
It’s a lot of fun. Good luck 🍀
Thank You. I was trying to learn what the most environmentally concious way to use and dispose the mineral spirits was.
You’re welcome!
Another successful painting. You accomplished what you set out to do - great painting. Thank you for all the excellent explanation of each step. So very helpful.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I❤it!
Terrific! Thanks!
This was the most encouraging lesson I have watched yet. It is a fear of painting destroyer. Thank you so much- you are so generous and "real".
Scott, how do I get a notification and the ability to join you when you are live online?
