Neglected Honda Rebel 250 | Will It Run?
We're back at it again! If you remember, I picked up this 2005 Honda Rebel with the purchase of the 1975 BMW R90/6 I found last year and it's about time we started knocking out these project bikes. I figured we'd start with the easiest! Whoops...

(side eye) Nailed it!
😅 Sure did!
You weren't wrong about the carb throttle bracket needing to be taken off first. The carbs on 250 rebel will never not be a pain in the butt.
Happy to hear I wasn't missing something. Needing to pull the intake tube back through the airbox to remove the carburetor is in interesting design, it took a bit of working but we got there.
Keep going, good work🎉
Thanks!!
I just did this on a 86 250 rebel. Loads of fun and very simple to work on.
Absolutely! Great beginner bikes in both riding and mechanical aspects.
This is a great channel if you like BMW motorcycles The video editing is very high-quality The audio is also very high-quality. It’s easy to understand everything that the people are saying. I’m wondering if you’re using an Insta360 or possibly a GoPro because I can see the fish eye lense
Hey, thanks dude! This whole video was filmed with a GoPro 9, can't remember if I had any ND filters on it at the time or not. Since then it has developed a power circuit fault, so in the market for something new.
@@DispatchMoto like I was saying everything looks good I was using an insta360x3 Recently upgraded to a x4 Sometimes I just use the iPhone 15 pro max Interesting to see what everyone uses to create content
Hope you figure out what is wrong with it
Thanks, dude! 🤙
Did you find the problem? Mine had similar issues. Had a crack in the rubber intake boot. Also seems like she may need a new starter clutch.
I've been terrible busy (or great at making excuses) and haven't dug into it yet. When the time comes I'll be sure to give the intake boot a good inspection. Keep me updated on yours, would love to hear more about it!
That’s why I am going to buy brand new
Nothing I can't fix 4 beers deep.
See them every day in FL! They don't mess with you if you don't mess with them.
100% agree!
Bro was taking a sunbath dont disturb him😂
Belly up for full coverage! Smart and efficient!
I think ill never see that in my life 😂 I don't think crocodiles cross the roads in France
Fingers crossed!
This makes me not wanna sell my 03 scarver eveyone talks bad about these older bmws but if they are taken care of they will last forever
Right? Good maintenance and basic knowledge about the specific bike goes along way. I've heard (almost) nothing terrible about these older F series bikes.
don't use the pen to poke around, the brain doesn't understand what they want from it. Just hold on.
Great bikes. I had one and my wife has one. Her’s she’s ridden halfway around the world and back again. Only real issue is water pump impeller seals like to fail.
I always hear great things about them, can't wait to dig into it and get it out on the trails!
Check your idle actuator and clean it, check that throttle closes completely and has a little slack in the cable, check air temp sensor ( was the faulty part on my 650), loctide the battery connections, they come loose and cause similar problems and probably most important- stick to the propper starting procedure- turn ignition on and wait until one of the lights goes out ( dont know wich on on the dashboard, aprox. 5sec) then push the starter and always without turning the throttle, no gas at all! The ecu "resets" the throttle position when you turn on the ignition and gets faulty data if the throttle is not closed!
Legend! This thing will be running before no time with help like yours, thanks!
It's a rotax 650 pretty much the most reliable engine ever built won't be much that's wrong with it. Swm 650 as well another rare masterpiece of motor.
I might be biases, I have a tr650
The Rotax is a huge reason I ended up with the f650, excited to dig into it and get it running as well as I know it could be running. 🤙
A guy in Switzerland just posted a similar problem on his CZcams channel. He says that you just need to engage the starter for 3 to 5 seconds, which resets the bike's CPU. He tried it and it worked for him and he hasn't had issues since. Good luck mate. czcams.com/video/jwSEFHUOQNk/video.html
He looked into that camera on the handshake like “we got another one boys” 🤣💀
😂😅
I picked my '06 GS last week and it has developed the identical problem. I am leaning towards the fuel filter/regulator, your bikes PO mentioned this. To this end I have ordered a MANN-FILTER WK 692 which to all intents and purpose has the same spec. as the BMW filter/reg, about $20 vs $200 for the BM version. There is a video about it on the University of U-Tube.The MANN needs a tiny bit of Dremmel work and thats it. Over and out.
Hey, thanks for sharing! Definitely keep me updated on what ends up working for you. This has been sitting for a while now, so I'll do most of the typical maintenance anyway. I've heard these machines can be pretty temperamental, but I'm sure we will figure it out.
Cracking bike these I have the Dakar version for over 7 years and been all over Europe Fork seals are a messy but easy enough job Just some advice the battery's on these have to be 100 % if not it causes all sorts of problems like not ticking over won't rev right so priorities this But if you get it fixed excellent buy I have just bought a new Tennere 700 but love the Dakar 650 that much I don't want to part with it
I'm actually a little hopefully a solid AGM battery will solve a lot of electrical gremlins it has. Regardless, it's a good step in the right direction in diagnosing the issue(s) it has. Looking forward to experience even HALF of the riding you've done it, thanks for sharing!
Definitely think you got a good deal. I think you got a bad thing-a-ma-jig in the what's-it. Probably just need to add some Marvel Mystery Oil to the gas and the crank case, run it for a few miles, then change out the oil. LOL! Oh - FIRST!
You know, he never mentioned if those parts were replaced, that very well could be it! I'll probably start with checking the valves and making sure their in spec, but the marvel oil isn't a bad idea.
Good stuff!
Thanks!
I've a Daytona fairing I took out of my 76.
How can I get a hold of you? I might be interested if you'd want to sell it.
That is an Awesome find and price for all of that....
you freaking scored
I think so! If not, they should make some decent content.
$800 would be my bet.
Nice old school, air head, Beemer. I think they will make a comeback in popularity.
Absolutely! Just for the simplicity alone, I'm surprised they not as popular as they could be.
people keep turning them into cafes. Original ones will be more scarce at some point, I think they are going up in value right now.@@DispatchMoto
Right, I've done the cafe projects with old Hondas and I found that I'm very much a utilitarian. The r75/6 project is a prime example of that. This r90/6 is going to be restored with original parts and get it back on the road. 👍
That is fantastic. They are wonderful machines, I am looking forward to the content.@@DispatchMoto
Where in the US did you find this? Its beautiful country
Just west of Tallahassee, Florida. North Central Florida is beautiful.
I think $1200 is a decent price. Good luck with saving the old girl!
@@willpierson5138 For two bikes, not bad! Thank you, she'll be back on the road soon enough.
Free stickers to the first person who can spot and correctly guess the next project bike hidden in the video.
Is it that second r90frame? If not, it should be haha.
@nmalozzi Oh that would be a sneaky bamboozle! No, it's a full, non crashed motocycle.
thats bad ass
Hi dude. A question: is it hard to learn how to restore a R100, if one has little experience with bike building?
Absolutely not, R100 is a great platform. Hard to go wrong with these airheads, tons of resources online and great communities. Would love to see progress on it and hear what you end up doing.
I live in Pensacola. I wish we had just ONE twisty. Just one. That’s all I need. My tires have a chicken strip down the middle even tho I’m not a chicken. Lol
I'm determined to find something that resembles a twisty. If you're ever in the Tallahassee area, we can go looking together.
@@DispatchMoto Cheers, mate.
Where did you get the springs?
Hey Jim! They're the springs I took out of the original forks. As far as I could tell, they're the factory springs.
@@DispatchMoto ah, got it, thanks! Where did you order the replacement hardware (other than the springs)? Thanks for the help - I’m planning on rebuilding the front end on my ‘92 R100GS this winter, so I may have further questions!!
@@jimmelino3361 Boxer2Valve offers replacement hardware kits, they're amazing. The R100gs is a bike I want to own in the future, very jealous! Just saw one this past weekend for the first time and only reaffirmed that.
@@DispatchMoto thank you, thank you, thank you! I’ll let you know how it goes with the GS!
I've been riding the same R100 for thirty years. I'm too old and weak now to compress the spring and turn the nut at the same time. However, I came up with a solution. I used a four-foot bar clamp lashed to the fork, a socket and socket wrench to compress the spring to the bottom, and then used the wrench in the usual way. Caught the threads with no real physical exertion. I ground off the first 1/4" off the face of the socket to get rid of the chamfer, and then cut a small piece of plywood to fit into the socket to hold the nut head flush to the face of the socket. Then, when compressed, I could see the nut was square to the tube and threading was easy.
Great tip! I'll try it next time I disassemble the forks, thanks for sharing.
Man I miss riding in Florida!! Stuck in Nashville, not many dirt roads and trails in this area ,its like 100mls to nearest good trail riding but a good bit of backroad riding. Nice work on that old BMW 👍 I miss my 08 GSA I had to give it up because my old bones couldn't handle the wate anymore I'm riding a 2022 xr650L nowadays much lighter. Cheers 🍻
Oh man, I still think I'd swap places with you! This r75 is pretty heavy, I can't imagine all these newer, huge adventure bikes. That being said, I'm sure they're well more balanced and better engineered. Would love to try out a GSA. If you ever make it back down to my area of Florida let me know!
@DispatchMoto I'm from Panama city Beach area and have a cabin about 30min north of PCB, ILL be down in November when it's cooler , man you would love a BMW GSA I'm over 60yrs old, had a bad reck back in 1980 and those old injuries have surfaced in past10yrs and slowed me down or I'd still be banging around on that BMW ! I had an xl600 back in the day that I ran all over the south Florida area where I was raised Stuart..Port Saint Lucie . I may look u up in November my cabin is only about an hr from Tallahassee. CHEERS 🍻
I just bought a barn find 83 R65. Everything the guy said was good on it, isn't. Tank rusted thru. Motor locked up. No power to anything with new battery installed. I'm realizing what I thought was a quick carb repair job is looking like a frame up resto. I just bought a motorcycle lift because I'm an old man and I can't bend over for very long. This week I'm going to start pulling it all apart. Wish me luck! Lol
I haven't torn into it much yet, but I'm worried the engine on the r90 I purchased might be soft seized, so I know the feeling. At least this way you'll go through the whole bike and know what you can count on! Thanks for the comment, good luck on the rebuild. Keep me posted!
excellent video! I bought an upgraded top fork mount and will be installing it today. I came to your video to see what all is involved. Looks like I can undo the upper portion and lieave everything attached below. Since the wheel and bottom fork brace will still be attached, I dont think the forks will move on me.
Glad you found it useful. Definitely report back and let me know how it goes. Good luck!
I'm jealous!! BMW Airheads are beautiful bikes. I have something similar (KMZ, soviet version basically) but they're nowhere near as reliable.
Still, very cool! Would love to see it.
Great vid man wish you many happy rides. LOL!
Thanks, dude!
Love airheads, but not worth a whole lot. Before 1970, much more interesting.
I've seen good examples sell for $4-5kish, but I like to tinker so it's all worth while regardless. Pre-70s are definitely cool, personally I've been eyeing the 90s r100gspd's lately.
@@DispatchMoto You're in it for the love of the bike - golden! Lots of parts and wisdom out there on that bike. BTW I own two. Enjoy!
No mention of the bearing outer races and how they're extracted from the frame & fitting the new ones
Hey Max! I have a whole video, the one uploaded right before this one, showing how I removed the races DIY style and installed new ones. Gotta replace those races! Thanks for watching.
@@DispatchMoto Ah! just watched it!. I have spent days getting those buggers out - no welder
@@maxbrettargh232 Definitely my least favorite part of any bike refresh. I will probably just buy the correct tool next time.
where is this video?!
Short answer, still tied up in post production. Hoping to get it out soon!
@@DispatchMoto any progress? would love to see it
😢
It will be saved!
Junk is good
I love junk!
Is there gonna be a build series on this?
More than likely. I wanted to steer away from my builds and start traveling and interviewing other people about their builds but I think we can manage both.
@@DispatchMoto the bmw builds are great. There isn't enough vintage bmw content on youtube
@@salvagingsouls5418 I agree! I have a whole series about a R75/6 I saved last year if you haven't already checked it out. I love these old airheads.
Working on a similar rebuild. What master cylinder did you go with and would you do anything different? Thanks for posting your progress. Definitely been helpful already.
Hey Daniel! Glad you're getting some use out of them. The exact one I used is linked in the description of this video, a Magura 225.2 with a 13mm piston. Wouldn't change a thing, stopping power has been drastically improved.
@@DispatchMoto Thanks very much! Sorry, not sure how it missed it in the description. Hope you get riding weather soon!
I worked on airhead BMWs at a Police workshop in Europe for three years, back when the /5 was the mount of choice. I have to say you have tackled this rebuild with gusto, doing many right things and a few dubious ones on account of not having a lift and the right tools. The BMW airheads are simple but in the simplicity is a lot of good engineering that requires finesse and knowledge. I became certified after a period working under some ace Beemer mechanics. (Not techs as they call them today). You have done a great job and I hope the bike runs well for you. Kudos to your girl friend: none of mine would ride on a bike.
Thank for sharing Robert. The bike has truly never missed a beat on a ride, whether it be around town or across the state.
Fantastic teaser! Cant wait to see it!
Good job. Needs a little work on the front end; should not need a beater for the axle. It should slide in with little to no resistance. But that can wait till later in the build. Great bike.
Yep, totally agree. I waited until I had the center stand back on the bike to really tune out the stiction in the forks.
Nice man! Where did you get the H4 bulb? And did it come with a fan of any kind to cool it?
I got the H4 from EME, no fan but I haven't had any heat issues. Probably have 10+ hours of driving with it. Link is in the description if you wanna check out the specs.
