Welcome to Donu's World: Wit, Wisdom, and a Pinch of Pepper!
Join me as I share my personal history and life's adventure in Nigeria and beyond.
My pen has graced the pages of Vanguard, The Africa Report and I have appeared on the Channel 4, BBC, Arise, Channel 4, Al jazeera, Sky and BBC. When I'm not crafting (not always) insightful commentary, I'm bridging cultural divides, empowering communication, and advising the powers that be. But life is not always boardrooms and bylines!
This channel is a vibrant tapestry woven from life's triumphs and trials. Here, you'll find me navigating the joys and hurdles of single parenthood. You'll witness my (sometimes messy, often hilarious) journey towards a healthier me, where I try and fail and try again, sprinkled with a generous dose of Nigerian spice.
There's more! I'm opening my heart to hear your tales, your triumphs, and your woes. Are you a fellow divorcee navigating life's solo act?

I was very moved by your account of the devastating decline in your mother's mental faculties. It's particularly cruel when, as it seems in her case, it precedes significant physical decline. My mother is 92 and has been in poor shape physically for many years. Only in the last 18 months or so has her mental condition started to decline noticeably. We are bracing ourselves for what may lie ahead. It's heart breaking. Like you, the thought that that could be me one day is horrifying. However, from the research I've done into this, the genetic component is not necessarily the biggest risk factor. For some types of dementia, yes, two copies of a particular gene are bad news (you can get tested for this) but lifestyle can do a lot to mitigate the risk. Enough sleep, enough hydration, a varied diet with plenty of plants, sufficient exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, scrupulous oral hygiene, maintaining good cardio-vascular health, wearing hearing aids where these are indicated, and avoiding loneliness - all these can help to stave off mental decline. I think it's comforting to know that we are not simply passive victims of our genetic destiny, we do have a measure of control over our future wellbeing. Stay well, my friend x
Being the richest is not a flex! But yes, we all have a kinship. The good people from all the cultures are the people who keep the world going around.
Dementia is a devastating illness that traumatizes everyone. More needs to be done in this part of the world to deal with this: to recognize this ailment, and assist caregivers.
My Auntie of blessed memory. May you continue to enjoy eternal rest.
Love watching your video.
Trying to talk to M and H is futile. Thomas Markle begged them to visit on his 80th birthday, he just wants to see his beloved daughter and meet his grandchildren. Did she visit? No. The woman is heartless, evil. Poor man, he may die with that pain. Harry has lost everyone too, and his dad besides battling cancer is also trying to grapple with his son's betrayal and desertion. You are a wise, generous soul, Donu. I feel as if this very public debacle pains you.
I’m so sorry for the way in which you lost your mother, Donu. You honor her memory well. Death is the worst pain of life, it’s so hard to watch your loved ones die slow deaths. May your mother, Ann Kogbara, Rest In Peace. I’m 67 years old & I must tell you recently I’ve noticed I can’t remember names of people I know & have known for long periods of time. I fear I am experiencing the beginning of… something. Hope your vacation is going well & you’re relaxing & enjoying yourself. 😘😘😘
Donu, thank you for sharing such thought provoking topics every Friday. I'm sorry about your mom, but I am glad you shared the long goodbye. ❤️
Hello Donu, I am a retired nurse in the U.S. and my experience with my mother and her decline with dementia and other medical challenges was very similar to yours. In fact I almost could have written your text they were so similar. I had cared for countless patients with some form of dementia in my career but nothing prepares you when it happens to a close family member. I know you and your family did your best for your mother as I did for mine, yet the guilt creeps in. 💕
Thank you for sharing this,I have to retire and take care of my sister who is 77 and is in the beginning stage of dementia...I know it's going to be a long hard road from now on. Thank you again for sharing.
Better to be alone than lonely in a bad relationship... I met my husband four years after separating - glad I waited! If he hadn't come along I'm not sure I'd still be interested in looking!

Watching someone you love disappear through dementia is very devastating - we're on that journey now. You, and your son💔💔💔❤❤❤

Dementia is a very sad disease. Sorry about your mom. What’s sad is how many laugh at Joe Biden. I blame Jill Biden for not removing him from the platform! These people that laugh at Joe Biden.. would they laugh at their loved one with dementia?
Thanks for sharing.

Good morning from the UK,,,glorious day here for a change,,,sorry to hear about your mum,,god bless her and you and your family,,❤❤
Good morning Donu from NY. Sorry about you mum who suffered from dementia. My aunt recently passed away after suffering from Dementia for over twenty years. I don't wish that disease on anyone. She was very sweet and kind but became very angry at the beginning of her illness. I knew a few people in my neighborhood right now who is suffering from Dementia. Your mum story was bittersweet, and it hurt my heart. Love your dress and your earrings, most of all love you. Have a great weekend
❤
Thank you for sharing your story. ❤
Your mother was beautiful ❤️ My mother-in-law had dementia, but passed over five years ago. Sadly her daughter has the start of it. Such a cruel and sad illness. Thank you for bringing up this topic, so many people are afraid to talk, however, they are the same person.🇦🇺😌❤️
Do you believe people can change?
Donu, dear, whatever you talk about will always be interesting to me. Yes, I began to watch you when the Markles visited Nigeria, and yes, I think many of us are fascinated with the British Royal family, even though I'm American, I see the value of the BRF, I can't believe the imbecility of MM! She was received like a Godsend by the British people and mucked it all up! Mucked her life, Harry's, both families', her children's! But, whatever you talk about I'll tune in. Except the Kardashians! That would absolutely turn me off. There isn't any human interest in their lives, they are empty.
Watching your comments on M. Markle, I found you intelligent, wise, thoughtful. So, I subscribed to your channel. Your theme today hit me full on, again, your comments are so wise, well reasoned and open minded! Funny, my situation is like yours was, alone with a son. For now, he is the priority, I would not subject him to a new man. Soon, his life will start, then we'll see. Independence is beautiful though. Love your plants! That's my pastime time now.
I remember you being involved in media in the Uk. I never knew you endured such an ordeal ❤
I love your videos. You are such a lovely person. I wish that if i ever came back to Nigeria, I could meet you. I, too, have been alone for such a long time, and I, too, am not looking, but I would love to have my own person.
Man is the biggest baby GOD ever created, if you are not ready to be a care giver, jump and pass
Love is never too late for those who are open to it. I found it amusing as you described some of the things you dread in relationships but its not all that bad. Be open Ma’am, you just never know!😊
I love your point of views.
Hello lovely lady ❤
❤👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Hi im new to your channel ❤️🙏👏
35 years for me - I spend my energy on taking care of my health and general well-being. If a man presents himself in a manner that encourages me I am open. People need to get comfortable with being alone as for the most part we were born alone and will die alone. When people sense your unease with being alone they will prey on that weakness to your own detriment. I do not "force-fit" any situation that is not meant to be. I see and read about many sad stories of ill-fated unions that end badly. I am not unattractive so I often get shocked responses when I own up to me "singlehood". It is a good place to be: zero drama and the bliss of limitless harmony in your life - the secret to my youthful appearance.
Friendship is the best relationship to have, someone to share things with but not necessarily marry 😜
Hi Donu, have not seen your video for a while. You are a very respectable woman, reminds me of myself. I was married for over thirty years. My husband passed away in 2018, I have no desire in meeting anyone. I think there is too much work involved to have a good relationship with someone. My children are all grown up and doing their own thing. I love my single life; I do have friends and family. I am not willing to share my Queen size bed with anyone. These days, men are not what they used to be. Love that blue silk dress. As long as you are happy with yourself, that is most important.
I am 67 years old and have been in a relationship (post divorce) for 30 years. The relationship provides us both with great companionship and we ‘have each other’s backs.’ I was raising two children on my own and he supported me but didn’t interfere as their Dad was still on the scene and involved with them. The secret for us is that we don’t live together. We both love our independence at the same time as we love each other. My married girlfriends all tell me they think I have the perfect setup. lol!
Same set up I'm in. Eat what and when you like , sleep soundly when you like, watch what you like on tv. Happy to see him and Happy to see him go.
I have been on my own for twenty years, too. And have encountered crazy angry children from a previous marriage - honestly I would say that if anyone is in that situation, just leave. It can get extremely ugly and in my case it was because the children were worried about their inheritance and he played them like a fiddle to get attention. As it turned out, he had left two wives for much younger models while they had toddlers at home, so there was a lot of anger in those now-grown families. Refrain from subjecting yourself to that. A solution is to go back to university and go all the way! You'll learn so many things you never knew, even if you have already been to university when young-pick another discipline and go for it! I'm not looking for a man. I have a young son who is nearly finished at University, and I am looking forward to doing new things and supporting my son in his new career (and hopefully one day, his own family). Nobody needs a man! If one turns up, great. If none come along,, that is also just fine.
Married twice..im done!
I married late, Donu. And I'm glad I did. I wanted to have a career and be very independent when I was younger. No one could tell me a thing. I did what I wanted to do as long as it regarded me. Now that I'm married, my husband's needs and desires are as important to me as my own, and vice versa. It's great to have a solid, fun-loving significant other to cruise through middle- and later-life together. We really live charmed lives. But ya gotta take the risk. I strongly suggest you start dating without expectations except to be treated with respect and mutual enjoyment, then see where it goes. Don't even tell people when you're dating. They don't need to be offering opinions as if they're watching a reality show. I wished you lived in the USA and we could go man hunting for you. No shame! Ha ha. Life should be fun.
Sis, go date! "Good things come to those who wait, but not to those who wait too late."
My maternal grandmother had three husbands. By the time she was in her 60s and alone she would have occasional friends but she was not interested in taking care of someone else again. I have had one marriage and a failed long term partnership. I agree with her. I’m not saying never but I am clear that I don’t want another situation that I have to take care of everything again. (I’m in my 50s by the by.)
It's a scary move for me, but I would like to meet a nice, honest Gentleman. When you say "looking for love" am not quite clear what you mean or how this is done. As I sojourn my life, perhaps that certain man will cross my path. I have more to say but will stop here.
Donu, I love listening to your reasonings. I found love after a failed marriage and failed long term relationship. It was out of the blue and on balance, I find myself very happy. Should anything happen to this marriage -God forbid, now in my 60's, I doubt wanting to do it again. Maybe? Probably not.
