Aruncus: A Pollinator-Friendly Perennial for Dry Shade
Gardening in dry shade is challenging! Which is why I wholeheartedly vouch for Aruncus, or goatsbeard, and its ability to shrug off drought, attract pollinators and make the most of a very dry situation in my garden. That's exactly what it's done for four years and counting in my dry shade garden! And with no drip irrigation! That's really saying something.
Its foliage looks incredibly similar to astilbe too. I LOVE astilbe but it requires consistently moist soil and a devoted gardener. I am neither of those. After the settling in period in my garden, which is about three weeks (maybe longer for plants competing with tree roots) of consistent watering to develop a strong root system, they're on their own.
I don't have an irrigation system either, so once you see just where I have Aruncus 'Chantilly Lace' planted, you'll understand just how rock solid this astilbe look-alike is.

Planting Hollywood Hibiscus in Self-Watering Containers | Here She Grows
zhlédnutí 413Před 28 dny
After experimenting with my Aquapots Lite containers, I'm happy to say that they had a successful first season in the garden. So I brought them back for another go this year and am planting them with a simple but beautiful combo. Hollywood Hibiscus America's Sweetheart with a bit of Creeping Jenny from my garden. I also reuse my soil and show how to do that too. You won't find any specific meas...

Fragrant perennials create a delightful sensory experience in your garden. In this video, I share five of the most fragrant flowers blooming in my garden right now. And the cool part, these plants get better every year. They're perennial! Hi there! Planting Leeks & Potatoes in Raised Beds and Grow Bags | Here She Grows

When it comes to planting in raised beds and grow bags, you can fudge quite a bit on plant spacing. With such limited space, who has the luxury of two-foot row spacing? Those spacing recommendations on seed packets are meant for in-ground growing. Let me show you how I plant American Flag leeks I grew from seed in my raised bed. Their location in the garden will benefit the berry bushes they're...

My David Austin Roses are being put to the test by gardener error, high soil pH and hungry insects. From rose canker and chlorosis this spring, to thrips and caterpillars last year, maybe I'm not meant to grow roses. Let me show you what these three common rose issues look like and how I address each with vigilance and organic methods. Also, here are links to the rose gloves and soil soil testi...

I don't know why it's taken me so long to give a full tour of my suburban Chicago garden! But now that I've done it, expect monthly updates. I've been gardening in this space since 2004 and it was a challenge turning nothing but grass and compacted Earth into a space that brings people and pollinators so much joy. There have been plenty of failures, plants that have come and gone and the list i...
Did My Hardy Banana Survive Winter? | Here She Grows

Given the mild winter we had this year, I'll be shocked if my hardy banana HASN'T survived! What a disappointment that would be. I love big leaves for the drama and tropical energy they add to my small space garden. I find that big leaves - whether from canna, colocasia or hardy banana - are an excellent way to spice up a midwestern garden. Position them next to plants with small leaves to real...

How did you get away without installing a water pressure regulator valve? Even with the pressure regulator valve my hose sprayed tiny streams into the air. I had to turn my splitter part way off to get the hose to just drip. Any thoughts on this issue? Thanks, and have a good day.

I did that to my Charles Grimaldi this spring. I think I was too timid and now I can see I could’ve gone a little bit more aggressively. Next spring, I’ll do that. I always thought that you have to trim the top as well so that the roots are not too small for it

Your angels trumpet looks very healthy and happy. Last fall, based on one of your videos, I reduced the root ball of my very large angels trumpet by half and rooted 5 cuttings from it as insurance against what felt like me attempting to kill it. 😂. Then I worried all winter about whether it would leaf out again in the spring. I’m happy to report that it survived. Both it and the 5 cuttings are growing well. Would love to see your angels trumpet later in the season in bloom. Thank you for taking the time to make and post your videos.

I live in Ohio and I just bought some of this because I’m trying to grow as many sages as possible, and I don’t think it can survive the winter, but I am wondering if I made cuttings if it would or if I should just start over. Also wondered if it could be brought in doors for the winter and if so, what it would need.
