Fairytale of New York, RIP Shane & Kirsty - The Pogues (remastered)
Fairytale of New York - The Pogues (1987) - Rest in peace Shane & Kirsty.
It was Christmas Eve, babe
In the drunk tank
An old man said to me, "Won't see another one"
And then he sang a song
"The Rare Old Mountain Dew"
I turned my face away
And dreamed about you
Got on a lucky one
Came in 18 to one
I've got a feeling
This year's for me and you
So happy Christmas
I love you, baby
I can see a better time
When all our dreams come true
They've got cars big as bars, they've got rivers of gold
But the wind goes right through you, it's no place for the old
When you first took my hand on a cold Christmas Eve
You promised me Broadway was waiting for me
You were handsome
You were pretty, Queen of New York City
When the band finished playing
They howled out for more
Sinatra was swinging, all the drunks they were singing
We kissed on a corner then danced through the night
The boys of the NYPD choir
Were singing "Galway Bay"
And the bells were ringing out
For Christmas day
You're a bum, you're a punk
You're an old slut on junk
Lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed
You scumbag, you maggot
You cheap lousy faggot
Happy Christmas your arse
I pray God it's our last
The boys of the NYPD choir
Still singing "Galway Bay"
And the bells were ringing out
For Christmas day
I could have been someone
Well, so could anyone
You took my dreams from me
When I first found you
I kept them with me, babe
I put them with my own
Can't make it all alone
I've built my dreams around you
The boys of the NYPD choir
Still singing "Galway Bay"
And the bells are ringing out
For Christmas day

In May of 1965 (one year before he recorded this song as a solo piece on his album 'The Real Folk Blues'), John Lee Hooker recorded an album during a tour of England backed by a local English band called The Groundhogs, which included Tony McPhee on guitar, Peter Cruickshank on bass, Dave Boorman on drums, and Tom Parker on keyboards. As much as I love that solo recording he made a year later (...

They didn't need to slow this down for future recordings - this is the quintessential version.
How to milk a horse.
While this could be The Who, it's not the High Numbers in 1964.
Did I die
This is where Buddy Holly got it from i think hahaha . "We-uh-e-uh-ellll" the little things you etc. etc.
Manu Chao
This is where Bob Dylan got the "jingle jangle morning." Unless he got it from The Auld Triangle song.
A true socialist song. Some people try to pervert socialism for their own ends but this is it at the end of the day

I grew up listening to Eddie Arnolds version on his awesome "Cattle Call" album. 🤠
Me and my sister would listen to the radio show with Symphony Sid. The hot summer night and even in the autumn. We were12 and 13 years old.
Dave Bartholomew had a lot of style
I was wondering why it was called Country Line Special until the harmonica comes in and then we have a pilled-up version of Cyril Davies & The All Stars. Marvellous! Love the Jimmy Guiffre section and Moon's fired up drumming. I saw them in Brighton at The Florida Rooms and at the Downs Hotel in Hassocks at the time. Small clubs and they were stunningly loud and magnificent.
New subscriber; thanks for posting this best version of the song. RIP Shane MacGowan, poet extraordinaire.
Brilliant compilation thanks - takes me back to the sights and sounds of those great days in the 60’s 😄!
Superb....powerful.
A youtube comment brought mw here. They said that this song insprired Lou Bega to write Mambo No. 5! I can definitely hear it now
Dave Bartholomew was the man behind fats domino. Rip legends.
my buddy Kurt played drums for them in the late 1980s he played me an old practice tape he had
I worked at fiesta Texas when I was 16. I worked at Cracked Axle Canyon. I heard this song so much my ears bled
Bert Jansch based his Snokey River instrumental after jazzman Jimmy Giuffre's Train and the River - and The High Numbers had taken the Giuffre instrumental to their own awesome madness!

Underture from Tommy in the making.
This is NONE OTHER than the unique unmatchable sound of THE WHO!! If the retard SEEFORMILES67 whom cannot see inches in front of him has you convinced because he is the biggest blabbermouth! At least hear LOUDER Moon/Daltrey Baba O"Reilly harmonica/Townshend and Entwistle jams from Abbey Road way ahead of and heavier than the Beatles IN 1964!!! And the Glorious Quadrophenia/Tommy/ Lifehouse SOUND that NO ONE had duplicated YET BY 2024!!! And YOU believe a ignorant troll with a big mouth AND NO CLUE!! The HIGH NUMBERS WERE to become WHO!
He listened and cared more about people than himself.
The early who in Abbey road studio sounding like an older version of themselves.
"1964"? I don't believe it! I was a Who fan as early as "I Can't Explain"! I'm 74. This sounds more like the Tommy time period. And, I've seen them live twice; In 1968, and 1971!

OMG, I was there! Mardi Gras 1968, some little club in the Quarter. Something Alley….Pepe’s Alley? It was a long, long time ago. As I recall, Freddy Fender was a member of the group before he was Freddy Fender. My date was enamored of Freddy’s version of Neon Rainbow. Anyone else remember this? We went to Pat O’Brien’s afterward and I have never been so inebriated in my life, before or since. I was truly in hell for a couple of hours. Damn those Hurricanes. I always remembered this group, but everything else is hazy. It was quite creepy when he started with the “I’m gonna see you in hell” stuff!
You are gonna love this, there is an excerpt from freddie fender's daughters book about his life and there is a rare image of Satan & The Disciples and a mini summary of the group. books.google.com/books/publisher/content?id=1e9LDwAAQBAJ&pg=PT161&img=1&zoom=3&hl=en&sig=ACfU3U1TT9zN2RHd9AJhuI6tlda_AUnveQ&w=1280

Oh man! I've loved Jimmy for a very long time.
