  • Although one of the most famous songs associated with the Sons of the Pioneers, it was composed by Bob Nolan in the 1930s while working as a caddy in Los Angeles. Originally titled "Tumbling Tumble Leaves" the song was renamed Tumbling Tumbleweeds and rose to fame with the 1935 Gene Autry film of the same name.

My soon to be 95-year-old mother sang this along with her seven sisters growing up during the depression down in the hot desert of Yuma and imperial California. We're going to sing it at her 95th birthday Saturday.
Probably bring a tear to All our Eyes ❤

When I was a wee boy my dad used to play his guitar and sing this song for me. It was my favourite as I always asked him “play the tumbleweeds dad”. I miss my Pa.

Bob Nolan (born Clarence Robert Nobles, April 13, 1908 - June 16, 1980. Name changed to Robert Clarence Nobles in 1929) was a Canadian-born American singer, songwriter, and actor. He was a founding member of the Sons of the Pioneers, and composer of numerous Country music and Western music songs, including the standards "Cool Water" and "Tumbling Tumbleweeds." He is generally regarded as one of the finest Western songwriters of all time. As an actor and singer he appeared in scores of Western films. Nolan died on June 16, 1980, in Newport Beach, California, of a heart attack.

My Dad had heart bypass surgery years ago and its said when they wheeled him into the OR he was singing Tumbling Tumbleweeds... with him having grown up on the farm in Eastern NC, I understood his love for cowboy songs!

Another one from my dad’s 78 rpm shellac record collection, and a bonafide classic. I dare you to find any country music radio station playing this Sons of the Pioneers hit. Sad to say, it can’t be done.

This is a favorite of mine and I sometimes sing it at the open mic group I go to. My dad used to listen to the old-timey songs so I learned to love them alongside him. AMERICAN WEST TRIVIA: The tumbleweed, symbol of the American West, isn’t even native to America. It was introduced from Asia and is commonly known as the “Russian Thistle”.

"The tumbleweed, symbol of the American West, isn’t even native to America." Much like the cowboys and their cattle. As a final note, these gussied-up guys would be utter failures if they had to live the cowboy life.
