The Sons of the Pioneers and Max Steiner - The Searchers (Ride Away)

  • This is a combination of audio and video work that I've done. I really love the theme, and I also love the vocal work done by the pioneers. I mixed the full vocal recording with the theme to really pump it up. This is the way I've been listening to it for a while, I hope you'll enjoy it as well. I also hope you will enjoy the video work I did, it wasn't easy, and it could be better, but I really wanted to push myself with this song, as I felt it merited it. John Ford's films are true American treasures, and I respect them to the fullest. This recording features Lloyd Perryman, Ken Curtis (Festus), Tommy Doss, Hugh Farr, Karl Farr...and might possibly feature Shug Fisher and Dale Warren, but I can't be sure. For more information visit:
    www.bobnolan-so...
Which is a fantastic site about the amazing Sons of the Pioneers, and it also has information on men like Stan Jones who actually wrote the words to this song. The Pioneers loved and worked with Stan Jones many times, especially during the era this was recorded. I hope you will enjoy it.

This could be his greatest performance - when he was given the chance - he proved to be a fine actor - western actors and indeed comedy performers are not taken as seriously as they should be - many a western has contained a great performance - this is one of them

One of the things I love about this film is that they let John Wayne who was beyond a megastar play a hurting, ptsd ridden, angry man driven to hatred and rage by the loss of his loved ones!! He was not a classical heroe here. Much of the story is about his redemption. When he chased her down and caught her, first time I saw the film, I was afraid he might kill her. Much of that film was a tragedy worthy of Shakespear. He picks her up, really looks at her and says "Lets go home Debby" and you know his soul won out! Wayne made so many formula films that some do not wish to recognize that he was one of the best American screen actors ever. Some simply hated admitting this because they disliked his politics!! He carried a presence like few others! Even his walk cannot be properly imitated. And John Ford and Howard Hawks seemed to bring out the best in him!! He is missed!!

Saw this movie as a young kid at a log community building in Alaska. I remember sitting there in the dark watching the images in all their bright color move a ross the screen. When " Scar" discovers Debbie in the cemetery, I just a boot jumped out of my skin!! That moment still gives me shivers. I was about her age at the time. Our life, at that time, was just about like her's in alot of respect. Homesteading, we had no electricity, central heat or plumbing. The desert was from removed from our life in the forest but, similiar. No Indians but dangerous animals and cold. I have never forgot that night watching this film & have seen it numerous times. I still think back to that each time.

Colin March I was in the valley on horseback about 12 years ago. You will not be disappointed. The place is sacred, beautiful, haunting and surreal. You feel the ancientness of the place. It's beauty can not be put in words. Even a master like Ford and his master cinematographers could not really catch it with that widescreen technicolor process. But he is about the only film maker who came close. Go and see it on horseback if you can and you will never be quite the same again. Just be careful that the duke and Gary Cooper don't ride out at you from John Ford's lookout point. It feels like they could.

Yeah, Unforgiven was almost the last ride for that era of westerns. It's a great film, but I'll always look at it as the genre's funeral. I don't think anyone's quite touched The Searchers as far as visuals are concerned, perhaps Kurosawa or Leone. There's not a great director that doesn't acknowledge this film as inspiring them in some way. You can see broad impressions of it everywhere, including Star Wars.

I had only heard the first and final stanzas to this song. I suppose that's because they are the ones featured in the film. So thanks so much for posting the whole lyric. Have to say that that final stanza is just perfectly matched with the arresting closing sequence which surely has to be one of the finest moments in American cinema. Ford (from his years as a silent film director) certainly understood better than any one that idea of just letting the images and the underlying music tell the story.

***** If you ever get the chance to see it on big screen do it because Monument Valley just takes yer breath away. You can tell Ford loved the place. That shot of Wayne as Ethan at the beginning reminded me of something Harry Carey Jr. wrote in his book COMPANY OF HEROES. Carey said that of all the films he made with the Duke, THE SEARCHERS was the most difficult because something about the character of Ethan Edwards touched Wayne deeply and instead of being his usual easy going, friendly self, he was sullen and withdrawn, impatient and snapping at people like Ethan.

Wow! An excellent effort and a worthy homage to the beautifully sung theme to a John Ford classic. The song and the film complement each other as Wayne's character searches for a lost relative whilst coming to terms with his own feelings and prejudices. Thank you for posting this.

What was Ward Bond's line before they attack the indian camp....."Boy, watch that knife!" or something like that? I get a whoop every time I hear it,
