(from Wikipedia): A Rainy Night in Soho", released in 1986, was originally included on their Poguetry in Motion EP. Two recordings and various mixes of the song were made in the studio. Songwriter Shane MacGowan and producer Elvis Costello clashed over the final mix of the song, with MacGowan preferring a mix featuring a cornet, and Costello preferring a version with oboe. The cornet version was used, except for Canadian editions of the EP, which used the oboe version. A third version combining elements of both mixes was issued on the 1991 Poguetry In Motion re-issue, and is also available on the remastered and expanded Hell's Ditch CD. Other mixes have surfaced on various compilations and bootlegs, and according to guitarist Philip Chevron there are "something like 13 versions... with different edits of the two recordings".

I moved to London in October, 1990 from a small, one-horse town in Ireland. I couldn't wait to go to London for the freedom and adventure, and get away from a repressed country at the time. For years I worked in the West End-Covent Garden, Charing Cross and off Piccadilly. I worked in fancy restaurants and hotels as a chef -The Ivy, Sheekeys, and others. It was tough but I can look back now with nostalgia, and some fondness, for a hardworking, crazy and busy youth. I worked my arse off and did well, working up the greasy career pole. I was in my early twenties to mid thirties. I'm 58 now, back in Ireland, with a sore back to show for all those long hours. One night, in the earlier years, after work at about 11 at night, feeling tired, lonely, doubting my decision to come to London-all the usual emigrant experiences-I wondered up, knowingly, to Soho. It was raining heavily and I was miserable. Kitchens, back then anyway, were very hard places to work. There was still a lot of anti-Irish feeling about too. I don't think I've ever felt lonelier. I saw a sign for a 'sexy girl' on a door. Should I?... No, I shouldn't, I knew that much...But it would be nice, too, I thought...I paid her 40 or 50 pounds at the end. She was Eastern European. She smiled as I give her the money, but behind the smile... I said I was sorry. She said sorry for what? I said nothing and looked away, feeling a bit stupid. I walked down a dingy stairs with damp green walls and came out to the rain and Wardour street again. I wasn't proud but I wasn't overly guilty either. That feeling surprised me, being an ex Irish catholic, even then. I headed back to Walthamstow on the tube to a flat I shared with a drunken South African and a lunatic girl from Brighton. I suppose I put it out of my head and tried to sleep. I'm older now and I don't judge myself, or others, or situations, so harshly. Every time I hear Shane's lyrics I think back to 1995. I was one of the lucky ones though. Everything worked out at the end for me. I got to travel the world and met my love-got married, kids, mortgage-all that stuff. When I listen to this song I think about what might have happened to all 'those little boys and girls'. Did they fall into heaven, or did they fall, even further, into hell. I have a feeling some of them did. Maybe, probably, they are aren't even here anymore in this world. Or, like me, maybe they now live respectable lives despite everything. I hope so. I worked as a chef also in the mid 80's in John Sheekey's. Keith Philips was the head chef there then. I'm also back in Ireland these days. I have fond memories of my time in London.

Are you an Irish? May I ask You for something? I watched many videos of the unforgettable Shain's funeral. A man in a tailcoat and a black hat walks in front of the hearse carrying the deceased's coffin. He carries a folded umbrella. I'm Polish and I don't know this custom. Who is a man and what role does he play during a funeral? Is this an Irish custom?
@@beattella1 this is an old Irish tradition and the man is the funeral bearer or funeral master who's job it is to make sure the funeral goes well and he walks in front as a sign of respect for the family and friends to be together in the Hearse leads the coffin and the people to the grave side, they wear all black and the locals would see him and pray for the deceased 🙏

A very sad farewell to another Irish literary icon. Sadly self destructive yet still able to write poetry of such heart breaking beauty that could melt the hardest of hearts. This particular song has a special resonance to me on a personal level. It never fails to reduce me to a blubbering wreck, and I'm regarded by people who know me as a pretty tough old boy. R.I.P. I am from Glasgow and went down to London like so many Scots and Irish. Certainly a place to experience in your youth but not a place you truly call home. Sad to lose Shane because so much of his music and his persona are relatable.

The only pogues song I knew before his death was ' Christmas in New York'. One of my favourite Christmas songs. I heard this when I was watching some coverage of his funeral(What a wonderful tribute to the man and his music). The tune and lyrics have haunted me since. So simple but so poetic as well.
