The 'Doctor Who' Conundrum - Stuck in a Time-Loop | Video Essay
PATREON: patreon.com/VerdanaVideos
DISCORD: discord.gg/T93j9JmbmB
Doctor Who has been on (and off) the air for 60 years and counting. However, the show has known its fair share of controversy and hardship during that during, both in front of the camera and behind it. The show's 2005 revival in particular, helmed by Russell T. Davies, was plagued with controversies throughout its entire run. Despite this, the show managed to achieve extraordinary success; Success which only began to wean after Davies' departure in 2010. 13 Years later, Davies made his triumphant return to the show just in time for its 60th anniversary celebrations. However, like his last stint as showrunner, his new era is already marred in controversy. This combined with the show's declining popularity over the past several years begs a question: Can Russell save the show? Or, alternatively, does the show even need saving in the first place? And perhaps most importantly, what is going on behind the scenes causing all of these issues?

Definitely agree with a lot of the points brought up here. RTD is simply performative. As a fan of Chibnall's era, I'm also extremely tired of everyone heralding RTD's return as the "revival of Doctor Who" when in reality Chibnall's era was just a different direction for the show, not "objectively bad". I'm also a fan of the Timeless Child retcon for similar reasons, and I'm glad RTD is doing more with it because I think it's a rather compelling change.

Honestly, I wouldn’t mind if it got cancelled for a few years again, then every now and again when some talented new writer comes along with a real passion for the show, we can get a couple series then it goes on another several year break. I feel like the formula of producing consecutive seasons for decades at a time is unsustainable and naturally creates problems. Kinda wish Doctor Who would rebrand into something like how Star Trek has several shows over the years. Have a hard like 7-10 season limit for each time the show comes back, give it a subtitle each time so we don’t have to have these fan terms like Classic Who, New Who, RTD2 Who. I don’t mind Doctor Who continuing on and on, since it has a unique legacy and presence in media, and I feel like the formula is evergreen in a sense, but it can’t rely on the same creatives for like 20+ years, eventually it gets repetitive, any show would run out of steam that way. To keep it fresh, imo it needs regular breaks. And I wish in general the BBC would treat Doctor Who as the treasured IP it really is. Since arguably Smith’s departure, I’ve felt this weird tension between Doctor Who and the BBC, where it seems like the BBC still doesn’t take it seriously unless someone like Tennant is in the role, but they still rely on it? Idk it feels like they’re keeping it on life support out of obligation and I’m not entirely sure why. I love the show and always have but it’s beyond tired by now. And I feel bad for Ncuti, an actor I think fits the role well, coming onboard during one of the strangest periods in the show’s long history. It’s not the 80s anymore and EVERYTHING gets a reboot/remake these days. If it did get cancelled or ended, I’m sure it would only be a few years before it got brought back again anyway.

And totally agree, I'm not mad on DW being a musical, but if you're going to do it for the love of god make sure the music is actually good. All the musical numbers so far have been unbearably awful. I really hope we don't get any more of that. Or at the very least, they get a specialist in to write because, because as great as Gold is I don't think this plays to his strengths.

Watching this video is almost kind of frightening because every point you've made about NewWho and particularly RTD's take is almost exactly what I've said. Every time I think you've made the last point that is near word for word things I have said, you get something even eerily closer. The final one was the take that RTD is bad at writing lighthearted episodes and I literally made a post a while back saying the exact same thing. RTD is bad at Camp because he overplays it so much. So if, like me, you've often found some of your opinions to be contrary to what the fandom in general believes, at least know that you're not alone.

as a musician who has to worry about this stuff: lesson 1 of trouble shooting ALWAYS check whether it's the thing you don't want to be broken first, then go with the next most obvious thing that could be broken and go from there reasons: 1. if you are worried about 1 particular thing being broken, the reason is probably cause there's a good chance it's broken, so check it 2. gives you a bit of relief if it's not broken and you'll more calmly be looking for the issue 3. if you leave the one you don't want to be broken last, then the disappointment will be magnified because not only is the mic (or whatever you didn't want broken) is broken, now you have to deal with the fact it was one of the LAST things you checked and you wasted so much time, time that you could have spent looking for a work around are these reasons fairly small? yes, but it's a lot better than the zero reasons to check it last

Bro. I'm still watching but you made me shout at the TV. Just because she's a younger Doctor, doesn't mean it can't be an older TARDIS. FURTHERMORE, I'm in the third camp; I like logical consistency, but each revival is its own universe its just superficially SIMILAR to the world we know. Like how Jay Gerrick, is in a parrallel Flash timeline now bro. DON'T QUIZ ME on time travel I FUCKING LOVE TIME TRAVEL. TOO MUCH, I'm not allowed to touch or otherwise enter or commune with time machines henceforth more or less. Or else space and time will just explode. Even though I don't believe in that type of time travel. Sometimes reality doesn't match your beliefs. Our universe is like a patchwork quilt held together by gradient/spectrummy fields of awareness which from a certain angle appear like threads and from another angle branch out into their own assorted multicosmoses like boiquets of destiny. APPARENTLY our own universe tries to avoid ABSOLUTE consistency or absolute inconsistency, because its more about character or some shit. I dunno... I prefer patterns. *shrug*. But we're all on the same ride now aren't we? Time travel is my favorite. Also portal travel and spiderverse stuff is also time travel, because of einsteiny stuff. Location, Era, Scale, Duration- all the same nonesense bro. Just like how it took someone time to read this because language and time are also all the same nonesense.

Pathetic. Literally every complaint is about you not the programme. None of the "mistakes" in the titles you mention are actually mistakes. They are creative choices. You may not like them but they are fine and what the makers wanted. Like the musical score... And I can hear the dialogue fine in all your clips. It's not the show's fault if you can't follow the accents or don't like the incidental music. The problem here is you.

To understand the Beatles properly, one needs to start at the beginning, and listen forward, not drop in the middle, as most of your generation has. It's harder for you, because the early stuff is in fake stereo, or two-channel mono, as we called it. The songs are teen angst-driven tunes, about things kids in the early 'Sixties would obsess over, rather than the problems of Millennials, and New Centurions. American teens were "introduced" to the Beatles by Capitol mash-ups, Meet the Beatles, the Beatles Second Album, and the VeeJay LP, Introducing the Beatles. We wouldn't know the UK versions until near the very end of "Beatlemania". Until Sgt Pepper's, every American release of a Beatles LP was marked by Capitol's ham-fisted manipulations. A couple side notes: 1) Magical Mystery Tour is a hybrid US release, mating the EP released in the UK, with three singles' A- and B-sides. 2) Revolver does NOT have one "Maxwell's Silver Hammer", or "Octopus's Garden" (Rubber Soul had three)! Yellow Submarine has a real soundtrack, released long after, but the Beatles had a policy against "Greatest Hits" albums, and putting singles on albums, so the original release was more like the UA soundtrack album of A Hard Day's Night. Ignore it, buy the real soundtrack. It makes a great listen. The George Martin noodlings are dull as dishwater, when you take away the animation. You're still young. You'll get the import of the other songs in a few years, as maturity settles in. An important thing to remember is the Beatles were teenagers when they hit the big time, in the UK, George barely 18, when the band began to take off. They grew up with their audience, and their songs morphed with the changes we were going through, at the same time. Here's a list from someone who bought all the Beatles records, LPs and singles, as "New Releases". I include the Past Masters albums on my list, because there is no Greatest Hits, and those songs do not appear on the albums on the official list. In addition, I include Beatles VI, cuz Capitol got one perfectly right, an album that works, beginning to end. These are the ... Honestly, this video is so refreshing. All of the criticism you’ve made is delivered in such an inoffensive yet direct and confident way, and it’s extremely clear and well thought out without blindly bashing on the show, especially regarding how you handle the more political elements which is a very tough balance to make. And of course you don’t just talk about where you want an improvement, you make an effort to not ignore the positives which worked perfectly. This also proved to me I don’t have to agree with everything in a video to enjoy it, such as the amount of music which I find quite charming in Doctor Who (although that could just be the musician in me speaking). But more importantly it reminded me of what I’d also like to see in the show, which you’d think I’d know already but is actually harder than I realised, while opening up my mind to new ideas I hadn’t thought of. Oh yeah, and it doesn’t take itself too seriously and only when it needs to? For a while I thought I was just getting tired of all the criticism towards this show across the internet (and other franchises too) because so much of it was off-putting, overly negative to the point of being downright hateful, and often pushed itself into one corner, as much sense as that makes. But this video reminded me of how beneficial and helpful good criticism can be, and actually spins it into a positive light which is very impressive. Good research and a good mindset goes a long way! I really hope you get the attention you deserve on this platform because this was fantastic, really great work 😄

There is a reason why Dr Who lasted 60 years.....creative ideas and story telling brought in the audience and created fans. This new generation has no original thinking. They can't create anything on their own so they project their narcissistic misery onto our much loved classics. What began as excellent science fiction in 1963, turned into Eastenders in space after 2017 and is now just Brigadoon tickling the edge of a black hole. While Shitty Gaywad might like his black hole being tickled, the rest of the true fans no longer like being bent over and told what we should like. RIP Dr Who 1963-2017 Gone but not forgotten.

So, with respect, the entire concept of putting critics into two neat little boxes of those who value themes vs those who value logical consistency is a false dichotomy. One can value both things. They are not mutually exclusive things. If anything, not valuing the logical consistency in a work is a sign of sloppy writing or lack of care or effort. Again, with respect, if you don't value the over all implications of your writing with have on a larger franchise as a whole or the works of others before you in franchises and keep it in mind or if you feel shackled by such limitations, then the answer is simple: Write. Something. Else. No one *has* to be writing for any specific franchises and you don't get to enjoy the benefits of writing for something preexisting without accepting the baggage or responsibility. The issue most people have with such attitudes is that writing for a big franchise like Star Wars or Dr Who is that it should be viewed as a privilege. There are literally thousands of other writers, many of whom are just as talented as any of these show runners or directors and would kill to be given the chance to create something for these franchises even *with* the "restrictions" of the franchise. What people want is for them to hire writers that aren't just picked because they are famous or well known, especially when they have a clear distain for the franchises they are being handed, and no, trying to put critics in neat little boxes of "logic" and "theme" isn't going to obfuscate this basic problem. It's also quite telling that every critic you listed in the "Theme" group is well known for making videos that are sloppily edited, objectively get facts and information wrong, are essentially never critical of those who run the industry (instead frequently blaming the fans), and seem to hold a large hatred for those who like the presence of logical consistency. And many of these interviews and comments from the "Themes" side of things are frankly just dismissing valid arguments in favor of attacking straw-men. My dude, it's not about the color of someone's lightsabers, it's about adding stuff like multiple fights with Obi-Wan and Grevious clashing, no matter how flashy, and either side always getting away unscathed is not only is stake-less drama but it also undermines the entire concept of lightsaber fights being deadly and meaningful moments in the franchise overall. Or worse, having characters survive lightsaber stab wounds and ability to heal with the force making previous dramatic moments with character deaths feel less impactful in retrospect. Again, these are the exact sort of emotions and themes you are claiming the other side should value, and you can't just dismiss these sorts of problems as autistic pointless "plot holes".

The whole "let it go" thing in trying to uplift women (???) ends up looping around to just being transphobic, which is insane in the first place, but not only is there a trans character in the scene, shes the one that says the kind of transphobic line???

The reason 10 didn't break the rules after Waters of Mars is because his entire "the laws of time are mine" instantly were proven a terrible idea to him when Adelaide offed herself due to 10 trying to tamper with established timelines, probably also awakening the memory of Donna telling him that he needs someone to stop him and Adelaide was the extreme of that. It's like you ignored that situation completely to just force in your own fanfic? Don't get me wrong, your analysis is great even if I disagree with some of it (we all have our own taste after all), but I found it weird you selectively decided to leave out such a key event for really no reason at all.

Be careful when dealing with insecure men. They are the worst!!! Sometimes they are so jealous they just want to hurt you. If their ego isn’t fed Lord! He was willing to harm his family to prove he was masculine. This ninja told Hank to keep looking for Heisenberg because of his damn ego 😂 😂

Sometimes just because you’re a nice person. You start to think that’s who you are. Until you get a taste of power. Then you take advantage. You can shock yourself and not even know something like that was there until you are “triggered”. Cancer triggered Walt and made him want to be himself. Sometimes scary things happen in your life ;. A relationship, death, having children. So many big things randomly happens to us. You never know how you will react until it happens. Love this show … just only wish we would’ve seen Walt actually be like Scarface. Fully embracing Heisenberg. I felt like we didn’t try to see that it ended right when he would’ve become and even BIGGER character. Whhhy 😭🖤🖤🖤

Age ratings aren't to protect children from violence. They are there because kids aren't mature enough to understand stories and have their own interpretation of media.

The "real OGs" such as ME do not like this movie. Ive been a fan of fnaf since the first game and when i heard the movie was coming, i was so excited and me and my sister watched it... i was appalled, disgusted, and disappointed. It was genuinely heartbreaking to see one of my favorite horror series done dirty. It turned me off from the series.

The part with the angry British man talking about the doctor crying actually does make sense. He isn’t saying that’s how he sees it, but that that’s why the writers did it. The doctor would feel horrible about that, but he has never in any life cried (I may be wrong here, but the fact that I don’t remember it at all suggests it’s at the very least exceptionally rare) other than for people he outright loves. The doctor despite his regeneration does maintain certain traits, and his sort of jaded numbness is one of them. He did not know her or these children well, and he only cries here because of a message the writers want to get across that is obvious and thusly takes people out of the story
