The Last Airbender is an unholy film that caused me to reconsider how bad an adaptation can truly be. Moreover, it made me question what steps can be taken in order to ensure that an adaptation this bad is never produced by humanity ever again.

yeah i didn't watch avatar when I was a kid either - my boyfriend introduced me to it when i was 19, we binged over the pandemic, i loved it, and then instantly he made me watch the film. worst whiplash in the fucking world.
Holy shit, that Syrim cut of the dialogue was funny.
Thanks Better Call Saul for making me discover this channel, as if that show needed even more going for it.
The dialogue in this movie sounds like Shamalan took lines from the show, put them through Google translate two or three times and used whatever came out
The way Sokka’s name is pronounced in the film reminds me of in high school when I had to memorize sine as opposite over hypotenuse and cosine as adjacent over hypotenuse (SOH+CAH).
Holy precalculus, Shyamalan!
GoT's biggest flaw was adapting the entire first book in one season, cramming every plotline into the same timeframe is ultimately what lead to the adaptation losing sight of whatever the heck it was trying to do.
someday this man is gonna blow up. This is another gem of a youtuber that is criminally underrated
My reaction to movie Sokka: look how they massacred my boy.
the patented verdana adaptation formula is also an adaptation, very disappointed kind sir.
24:45 editing choices like this are gonna end up making you my favorite youtuber
"We believe in our beliefs as much as they believe in theirs."
How did this get greenlit?
The phrase "There's nothing new under the sun" really needs to be preached more. Most hate is derived from ignorance after all.
Excellent video by the way. most of these steps revolve around the acronym P.A.S.S.L.O.R.D.S

Ay just found this channel was listening to this at work. It's hella good dog. Please keep making long form shit like this. This shit keeps me going through my shitty job yo.
Skyrim joke was class hahahaha
AWESOME video, loved it.
Also, Arcane is an interesting new adaptation mainly because, whereas most adaptations are looking to translate the success of a story / characters from one medium into another, Arcane was made to expand the storytelling potential that is limited in an MMO. They were making something new and so all they had to focus on was preserving the characters, there was nothing superfluous to cut for time or ruin lol.
I can't tell if 21:57 is a reference to the card scene from American Psycho the way you said it or extremely coincidental
Shit dude I didn’t even notice that but you’re right, I said it almost the exact same way. Maybe I am Patrick Bateman after all
I walked into Walmart for the bathroom and walked out with Atla the complete series on DVD
You have to be the most underrated content creator on the platform man I enjoy all of your videos all the way through every time and they only get like 500 likes
The avatar movie was my first taste of disappointment from someone other than my parents, and that was a new experience
You should do one about Eragon. What a dumpster fire.
Perhaps I will
found this thanks to your tiktok, this series is very well made and good
I'm just starting episode 3 of this after binging your stuff all afternoon and you truly are great at what you do. Great introspective videos and funny creative topics as well. Glad I found your stuff.
Another beautiful video my guy
Another beautiful comment my guy
Ung: My name is Ung.
Me: Son of a BITCH!!! YOU SAY YOUR NAME RIGHT! RIGHT NOW!
Akira is another example of an adaption that was made before it ended. Only four volumes were made before the movie was made. Like Scott Pilgrim, the ending of the movie influenced the ending of the manga. I don't personally think of the Akira movie as an adaptation of the manga but rather an different telling of the same story but the beats of the manga in there.
4:10
Appa was the movie's most unforgivable sin. Animated Appa is the sweetest floofiest cuddlebeast that could warm the heart of Hitler. Movie Appa is a frightening monster.
man the scene where the prisoners using earth bending is worse than I remember, all that bending only a chunk of rock slowly flies towards an enemy
ATLA should never be in live action. It should always stay in animation because it was meant to be like.
This trilogy was far better than The Hobbit, subscribed!
So not that I want to defend much the trainwreck that is the live action airbender movie, buuuut... you're wrong about one point about it:
The name Aang isn't just a name the animated show made up-- all the character names are actual names from the various Asian cultures they were drawing from in the world building and, uh... the animated series is actually the one that got it wrong. The live action film, as terrible as it is, actually has the correct pronunciation of the name Aang. The change in pronunciation between show and film was basically just correcting the show's mistake (all the more baffling tho with the whitewashing of the cast, but hey...)
A friend of mine actually could not stand to sit through the original animated series because the repeated mispronunciation of the name Aang in that show she found incredibly distracting and pulled her out of the experience constantly, in much the same way that the the way it's pronounced in the live action film bugged the shit out of fans of the animated series who didn't know that the animated series had actually pronounced the name wrong the whole time.
Only one thing: I wouldn't say all art and stories are adaptations but iterations.
This video is amazing.
They probably skip the scene where Aang introduces himself to Sokka/Katara cuz they cant afford to make Appa look good lmao
After seeing the cowboy bebop Live action (4/10 imo) I feel like they are doomed to fail. We already know what they are supposed to look like and sound like in animation, so there doesnt feel like much of a point like there is with book adaptations. The people who are making the Netflix ATLA seem very passionate on every level of staff, but the best it could be is like a 6/10.
Also they have a limited budget of prob 80-120 million, split between 10 episodes, so how are they gonna afford to make Appa/Momo look good aswell as the action and sets. It feels like a mess in the waiting
Edit: I think Katara and Sokka went along with Aang in the show, not only cuz they realize how important he is, but also because Katara wants to learn waterbending. This makes it so it doesnt feel weird that they are just throwing everything away to help this kid, but also preserve the art of waterbending in their tribe.
The youtube channel "Hello future me" also made a video critiquing the movie its pretty good aswell
Thank you for the thoughtful comment! And yeah, there seem to be some major red flags in the development of the ATLA show that imply it’s not going to be…uh…good. It’s truly difficult to name adaptations of animated properties that don’t suck, because animation in itself is part of the identity of those properties. Stripping it away just feels like a crime.
dune. jojo. Atla. Witcher. It's giving me an aneurysm seeing all my fave media within the same video
also I think 84 dune gets a pass bc he's the funny old grandpa of the movie adaptations.
we just can't comprehend the genius of Shyamalan😂😂🤣
I remember watching the movie as a kid FIRST. I couldn’t for the life of me understand why people hated this awesome world and the cool concepts presented in the movie. Then I watched the show. *pikachu face*
The scenes are so bad I didn't even want you to play them, I just wanted you to keep talking about how bad it is.
was that... **blinks rapidly** ...Nicholas Cage in blackface?
12:23
Is that Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 music? Holy shit based
I waaaaited for the scene where 6 (SIX!) earth benders were needed to move a small rock 😂
I watched ATLA last year and yeah it good.
Yeah I was apprehensive about it at first because of how goofy it is, but I eventually warmed up to it and it totally still holds up today.
but game of thrones had enough source material, it went to shit because D&D decided to just... ignore it. The idea that they ran out of books to adapt is false
Why doesn't this have more views!?
Ask CZcams lmao
When will you have youtube memberships?
I added one just now on your suggestion
Cats.

@@VerdanaVideos Interestingly enough that can also be used as a concise review of The Last Airbender movie.
I could've forgive the white washing and the mispronounced names... ig... but the bending.... and Zuko's scar, and the dialogue, and the energy.... and everything. It's so baaaad.
Last Airbender movie SUCKED SO MUCH WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY.
i dont think it was about white and brown people, it was something like real races equated to what shamalan felt should be the characters races, like fire middle eastern, snow folk white, air some sort of asian, totally ass tho man and the races in the show already fit perfectly.
races dont exist
netflix blackwashes all their shows
Katara was still bad af tho
Wonder how well the netflix live action will do - at least it will have room to do whatever. Hope its not woke/bad... We shall see. O_o; can't be worse then this... can it? UwU.
tbh i felt nothing for yue in the cartoon either. she has a total of like 10 minutes with sokka and none of it goes beyond them being teenagers who seem drawn to each other. then they have heartfelt moments and she dies. it could have been turned into a genuine friendship instead of a romance and it would have been more believable
At certain points I get some Cosmonaut vibes from the music like 46:25.
ong
For the beginning, to be fair, *no one* was meant to be "white". No one is meant to be anything but some level of melanin, this isn't our planet we're talking about. Fire nation is definitely more pale, but suits more eastern Asian traits whereas the Water tribes are meant to be based on Inuit cultures. Like, while the skin tones would be more accurate if reversed, at least *someone* was melanated in the cast. That seems to be pretty important to a lot of people so it's almost like he got half a point there!
Sooo...race swapping bad now?
Or just in this particular case?
Oh SHUT UP
Imagine being the poor girl cast as azula to be in the last scene for 3 seconds just to set up a sequel that will.never happen
To be completely fair... Aang's name is pronounced wrong in the Avatar show. Ung is the way it should be properly pronounced.
