My favourite Queen album is Queen Ii. I love a lot of prog, and always appreciated Queen's particular take on it, with the piano taking the place of the organ you hear in many bands, all the complex vocal arrangements, and especially the way this album works together as a whole rather than just a bunch of songs.

I do not always agree with your analysis, but your arguments are still interesting. Just for the record, "The miracle" last song is actually "Was it all worth it" as "Chinese torture" is a cd bonus track as well as the extended version of "One vision" in "A kind of magic" where " Princes of the universe" is the closing song. Cheers!

'39 is one of Queen's best songs, good god man! Dope little acoustic sci-fi ditty about time dilation. Listen to that song 100x over rather than watch Interstellar and you'll be doing yourself a favor.

The comment about One Vision being used to end A Kind Of Magic is bizarre to me, as that's only on the 1991 CD reissue as a bonus track, and wasn't intended to be on the original LP.

Ill give you a few recommenditions.
Queen 2 to me is their closest album to perfect. Very much a Fantasy based metal album.
Innuedo might be an album that you love. It is basically 80s queen mixed with their 70s rock style.
Day at the races is almost you could consider a sequel to night of the opera. Defitinely their best album quality wise and is mostly ballad and hard rock mixed together.

Also, here are my fav song(s) from each album. (That isnt the REALLY popular ones. E.g: Bo Rap, We will Rock You, We are the Champions AnotherOne Bites The Dust and Under Pressure).
    Flash Gordon: Flashes Theme
    Hot Space: Life is Real
Made in Heaven: Made in Heaven
    The Game: Play the Game
    The Mirical: Breakthru
    Jazz: Jealousy/In Only Seven Days
A Kind of Magic: A Kind of Magic
The Works: Hammer to Fall/ Is This the World We Created..?
Queen: Doing All Right/ Liar (Liar was the first Queen song I heard other than the songs I'm leaving out of this ranking).
    Night At The Opera: '39
A Day At The Races:Somebody to Love/ Long Away
Sheer Heart Attack: In The Lap of the Gods (Original version)/ She Makes Me...
Innuendo: I Can't Live With U/ Im Going Slightly Mad/ These Are The Days of our Lives
    Queen II: Father to Son
News of the World: Sheer Heart Attack/ Its Late/ Melancholy Blues/ All Dead.
    Thanks for Reading! 😁

Interesting ranking personally I would place Queen I first and Innuendo second, but that is not generally a popular choice. I would also rank Freddie's Barcelona album just as high, it is a great album. I personally think Freddie's solo version of Made In Heaven is better. And like Hot Space, Cool Cat is an amazing song and very underrated. I also like A Kind Of Magic a lot, so it was nice to see it a bit a higher. Jazz is called Jazz because of the saying All Of That Jazz. I also really like Jazz, I think Mustapha is a great opening song, people in the Middle East love that song. One of most clumsiest errors of that terrible review from The Rolling Stone magazine is that Dave Marsh pretends that he knows more about Middle Eastern culture then Freddie Mercury. Freddie Mercury was Parsi or Persian. He was raised with some Middle Eastern tradition in Africa and India, he comes from Middle Eastern tradition. The Rolling Stone Magazine is still one of the worst publications you can find. A lot of metal bands have turned Mustapha in a metal song, and it sounds great.
Queen were close to metal in their early years. In some ways the more classical and operatic sound is closer to metal then the blues sound. A lot of metal bands do really like Queen. A lot of these songs, especially on Hot Space for example, sounds really amazing live.

There is a few songs you either said were duds or you didn't mention. E.g of a dud song: '39. Yeah, it's not one of the better songs on the album but in Queens entire catalogue, it is probably a top 69 song.
And an E.g of a song you didn't mention was: She Makes Me... (Stormtrooper of the Stilletos). Now, yes, it is pretty basic compared to almost every other Queen song not only on the album (Sheer Heart Attack) but in Queens entire catalogue. But they main gutair riff, and the harmonizing at the 1:00 mark is genuinely beautiful. So I recommend checking it out.
Fun Fact! Queen was originally going to put Sheer Heart Attack as the title track to the album of the same name, but couldn't find the idea to remove any of the songs they had on the album. But they hung on to it, and when Punk was a thing, they decided to release it (obviously changing it to have a harder rock sound than Punk did).
Edit: When you were talking about the P.S.A style songs, I actually have written a cover of Don't Try Suicide called: Don't Try Any Drugs. And personally, I think I am on par with the song. It pushes closer to not do them and dont scream "Nobody gives a damn!" So, I hope you're somewhat impressed with that.

    1. A Day At The Races- best song is either 'Long Away' or 'The Millionaire Waltz'
I know this is quite obscure for a Queen albums and best song ranking, since the hits aren't my top favourites usually in each album. Queen II is quite low to most people, so is Jazz and News of The World, while The Works and The Game especially might look quite high. You also might notice a trend in who wrote the songs, since most of my favourites were written by Brian May. Out of the 19 songs I mentioned, 9 of them were written by Brian May, and 4 of those 9 has Brian May on lead vocals for at least a verse with Long Away and All Dead, All Dead having Brian sing the whole song. And surprisingly, those two are in my top 5 favourite Queen songs. Very weird ranking, but I'm sure at least one person out there can agree with most of what I just said.

I will put a TL/DR at the end of the opening statement (this took me way too long to compose)... Very late to the party I know but I just discovered this video and it was hilarious. I even laughed out loud a couple times.
Although I differ on some things (because every one has different opinions), I understand where you're coming from in each statement. Originally made a ranking just from the top of my head but recently decided to rate every single song in Queen's discography. I averaged out each album with ranking every song... I didn't include the Flash Gordon soundtrack or Made In Heaven because they're just not in the same vein to me... A posthumous album and a soundtrack album with mostly instrumentals... Just couldn't do it. Also, this ranking doesn't include b-sides; the score would change slightly in the bottom half of the albums but not drastically... Anyway. My ranking is as follows
    1. Night at the Opera
    2. Sheer Heart Attack
    3. A Day at the Races
    4. News of the World
    6. Queen II
    7. The Game
    8. Queen
    9. The Works
    10. Jazz
    11. Innuendo
    12. A Kind of Magic
    13. The Miracle
    14. Hot Space
    1. A Night at the Opera - the great songs really carry the album (bo rhap, LOML etc.) and it gets the highest score because of that. There are a couple of songs that are interesting, although not my cup of tea but that doesn't detract from the score very much. - 4.3687 / 5
    2. Sheer Heart Attack. It's probably the most consistent album in Queen's discography. I'm not in love with She Makes Me, but other than that it's pretty perfect so it's next. - 4.195384615384616 / 5
    3. A Day at the Races. I love this album overall - Somebody to Love is amazing of course, as is Millionaire Waltz. Not as huge a fan of Drowse or Long Away though, so it's not any higher. - 4.16695 / 5
    4. News of the World. NOTW is great. It's Late is such an amazing deepcut. On the other hand, I don't think Fight from the Inside or Who Needs You is quite as strong. Perhaps because either they're a bit simplistic to me or I got bored of them. Anyway still high score overall - 4.141136363636364 / 5
    6. Queen II. This is slightly lower than where some would put this album, but to me there are a few songs that didn't quite capture me as much as most of the songs that are in albums ahead of this one. Highlights are March of the Black Queen, White Queen, Seven Seas of Rhye and Ogre Battle and lowlights (still good obviously) are Funny How Love Is, Father to Son and Some Day One Day - 4.052495 / 5
    7. The Game. This would have been lower when I was first getting into Queen, mainly because the added synths really irked me, like it did most fans. But after more thought , it comes here. It's probably because the highs are very high. I love Another One Bites the Dust and Save Me. Dragon Attack is awesome. I like Crazy Little Thing Called Love and Sail Away Sweet Sister quite a bit as well. However, it drops off a lot after that, because other than Save Me and Sail Away, side two really isn't up to snuff and it has that obvious 80's production - 4.032681818181818 / 5
    8. Queen. Pretty similar opinion to Queen II - some great songs but some forgettable ones. Similarly to The Game, side two is mostly uninteresting other than Liar (which I think is the best of the album). 3.947944444444444 / 5
    9. The Works. - So, the reason why it's a bit lower/middle of the pack is because I LOVE a couple songs, LIKE a couple, and then I think a few of them are only ok. Hammer to Fall is by far my favorite - I like Tear It Up, and It's a Hard Life, Radio Ga Ga and IWTBF are good as well. Although most of the rest of album is decent, it doesn't really go higher than that for me. Just another thought - in my opinion up until now (minus Hot Space) they don't have a single "bad" song. 3.914666666666666 / 5
    10. Jazz. So the way the score goes with this one is this: Fat Bottomed Girls, and Don't Stop Me Now are top tier, while there a few other songs I enjoy. The problem is there are quite a few just "above average"/mid-tier songs and too many really average songs that lower the score. In the rest of the ranking I think only one or two songs max from each album are "amazing" so that's why they're on the bottom. - 3.880769230769231 / 5
    11. Innuendo. The Show Must Go On is a masterpiece and Innuendo, These Are the Days of Our Lives, and I'm Going Slightly Mad are great. Beyond that though, the other songs don't really hit for me. There are only 4 songs imo that are "above average-great" - 3.732333333333334 out of 5
    12. A Kind of Magic. Who Wants to Live Forever is amazing but that's the only one. Princes of the Universe, One Vision, A Kind of Magic and Gimme the Prize (imo underrated) are good to great but the album also has One Year of Love, Pain is So Close to Pleasure, and Don't Lose Your Head which are all in my bottom 6 songs overall. That REALLY lowers the score - 3.705388888888889 / 5
    13. The Miracle. There are less amazing songs in this one than in AKOM but still a few great ones. Similar to AKOM, in my bottom 5 songs overall, there are 3 songs from this album - Party, Rain Must Fall and My Baby Does Me - 3.606636363636364 / 5
    14. Hot Space - Last and definitely least... Freddie wanted a funkier dancer sound due to his exposure to the club scene and AOBTD's success, so they made this.. I feel like they would have been more successful if the songs were more similar to the more funky (but still great) songs on The Game like Dragon Attack and AOBTD but they did not... That drum machine is annoying as hell. Anyway - Under Pressure is great but it wasn't even in the same sessions as the rest of the album. It's lucky they decided to put it in at the last minute. I enjoy Put Out the Fire (regardless of how drunk Brian May was while recording his part) though I hate those Freddie falsetto parts in the chorus. And I like Las Palabras, and Cool Cat too but they're barely above average songs ti me. Way too many "meh" songs in this one and not enough good ones - 3.440909090909091 / 5

Really good run-down of the Queen albums, which I do mostly feel, though I think I'd rank The Game much higher and Some Kind of Magic/The Works quite a bit lower. Doesn't matter though. Really nice observations; I've subscribed thanks tot his and the Doctor WHo video.
I have to ask though...why is it hilarious to imagine Queen spawned a genre of metal? I won't go as far as to say that "Stone Cold Crazy" is thras, but Queen do have quite a few metallic songs, as did many other bands of the time who were introducing heavier guitar sounds along with fantastic bombast to their music. is it because one thinks of Queen as a fun, quirky sort of band taht there seems to be some cognitive dissonance there? But so where Uriah heep. Scorpions (who did their best stuff in the mid 70s I think)...
And of course, nobody denies that Judas Priest are metal, and they are contemporaries of Queen who started out in a similar ballpark, sonically. Again, just listen to their 70s albums.
"Stone Cold Crazy" isn't thrash metal, but that's mostly because we're still in the 70s and just haven't got there yet in terms of speed and aggression. You can smell it on the wind though.

It's soooooo fashionable to hate on "Hot Space", but I'm going to argue that it is a better album than "The Game", which is also mostly funk and disco but with far less interesting arrangements. But even if you simply cannot appreciate that style of music, Side B of the record is traditional Queen fare, as good as anything else they produced in the '80s.
    Fight me! 😛

  • @finnjacobs
    @finnjacobs Před 2 lety +1

Can you like one album better than the other, despite you acknowledging that it's a worse album? I like hot space better than say Queen 2, but objectively Hot Space is a worse album. It's just that the early queen stuff just doesn't appeal to me, I like my Queen stuff 'aged' you know. (I'm trying to say that I like Queen's 80's stuff better, Freddie sounds more mature to me and the songs are maybe more conventional but they appeal more to me)

    • @VerdanaVideos
      @VerdanaVideos  Před 2 lety +1

Absolutely. Sometimes personal taste does not line up with one’s measure of objective, universal quality. For example, I personally enjoy 3D Sonic games a decent amount, but I am quite aware that most of them suck ass. That’s something I keep in mind when I make these videos. Ultimately, I try to find a compromise between my subjective opinion and my thoughts on the album’s objective quality, though my personal taste probably has final say most of the time.
