    Coolia and osteoporosis you want a oversized uv light. For large and small cell amphidinium you was to dose silicates. You should also dose a form of bacteria, phytoplankton and cocoapods to increase the biodiversity of your tank. Iv found that dinoflagellates are more likely to be an issue if you set a new tank up with dry Rock and sand. Its far easier to deal with the problems associated with live rock than it is dealing with dinoflagellates. Dinos are in every tank they only become an issue when you have a lack of biodiversity.

    Having experienced an Ich outbreak, I found that polylab medic, metroplex and a good UV can beat it no problem. So now I treat the whole tank any time I add a new fish and turn the UV flow down for at least a month. Since implementing this practice I’ve not lost a single fish. I’ve heard (but yet to see evidence) that Ich can be transferred by coral, in which case QTN is not possible and ultimately QTN fish is pointless. I do have a friend that added a large coral from a very well known Portuguese supplier that basically infected his entire tank with Brookynella and wiped out every single fish.

      I am just upgrading to a bigger tank and facing the same question. I have gone for a lower landscape and less of it because I want to maximise the open water for fish and also have fewer, but nice, corals with a bit of separation. Likely LPS dominated. I can always add a bit of height if I end up not liking it

    • @martinward7239
      @martinward7239 Před 8 dny

      I think the aquascape looks like a pile of rocks. Which it is. But having a perspective look - at 1:20 the right hand pinnacle is getting close to half height. The left side peaks at 1/3 height ish? Add a bunch of coral height to this and all of a sudden the centre area becomes a dead spot as you just won't be able to push flow that far without smashing the left and right coral heights. Start low and build up. Be prepared to move structure. You see every kind of rock pile and structure whilst diving. Fish LOVE structure they can hide in.

    I appreciate how well you're documenting issues setting up a new aquarium. When people say saltwater is "easy", I just roll my eyes and turn off the video. My first marine system was established in the days of dry rock and dry sand. And then I had 3 years of non-stop problems and issues establishing it. Which included draining it and culturing the rock, and then draining it a second time to treat a coral eating pest, and then a fallow period after I had Brooke in the tank... It was the 4th year before their was any sense of ease or stability. Then, that tank had a seam failure and my second attempt at a reef tank began rushing into my 'tank upgrade' I had started several months earlier. I had the new aquarium on the stand and not much else, noting plumbed, not enough lights, too few pumps. But the fish and corals went in anyway.... That was this past December. And it's been nothing but a downhill slope since, as the new tank lacked any sense of ecological succession or 'stability' even though it inherited all my live rock and corals. I watched most of my coral die off over the last 4 months, despite all my best efforts in cleaning, testing, treating, and water changes. While experiencing the worst hair algae and cyano blooms I have ever seen. This is the first time I've watch hair algae choke out a coral, because it was growing so fast, I couldn't keep up. And that's with all the usual offenders in a full cleanup crew. There are simply some tanks that are an uphill battle. Those tanks, are what makes this hobby a real challenge. I'm not done with reefing, but I'm certainly taking a step back, trying to maintain what I have, and have no interest in adding anything else for some time. It seems I have another long establishment period ahead of me...

    Just curious. You last mentioned you had UV running on the QT tank due to a bacterial bloom. Were you still running medication in there while that was going? I’ve heard UV can ruin the medications. Might be best to check and make sure you don’t need to redose whatever you were treating with to be safe.
