Coming back into the reef keeping hobby after a 25 year break. I am amazed at how easy it has become. But the weekly water change is still the most important thing along with testing.
As a newcomer to the addiction my biggest problem is to find clear answers. As an example I'm still confused of what tests to do, when to do them and most importent why I need to do them.
Testing your parameters gives you a good idea how much your tank consumes certain key elements. Once you have the calculations you can then dose what is needed to keep things stable. In more simplified reefs a water change is all that is needed to replace lost elements. In addition to testing from home sending off an ICP test will give you even more information about your tanks parameters and the biome itself
On top of the basic stuff from freshwater you want to test salinity, alkalinity, and magnesium. Im sure theres more too, but thats a good baseline
Although proper water chemistry is important. Don't let chasing numbers ruin the hobby for you
Great advice....keep it simple, it shows you don't need the bells and whistles to keep a coral farm packed with beautiful corals.
Having the self awareness that you’re lazy and putting things in place to address this is a huge point! My son got me into this hobby during lockdown and I’m now a complete addict! We have a main tank in the living room (mine) and he’s tried having smaller ones in his room. I’m completely OCD and actually enjoy cleaning, doing water changes and testing my tank (crazy - I know!🤪), my son on the other hand gets very complacent after a few months. One guess whose tank is thriving and who throws in the towel! If you want success in this hobby you have to put in the work - consistently and long term!
This is the most honest video I have ever seen.
Wow! So timely and spot on for me personally. Thanks So so much!
This is the best video I have seen in quite some time and I really related to it. I strive to not just keep things alive but to have them thrive and I haven't figured out how to do that yet-hence why I have named my tank "The Glass Box of Death"
Really good footage!
Dig this content. Definitely made me think of a few things I need to do differently.
Good Sir, as always, You are excellence itself.
Really good job, it’s not a sprint it’s a marathon
Thank you so much for this video
absolutely spot on advice 👍
Excellent!
Good advice ! I'm into my 4th year, and can only now say, I've arrived to a tank that's stable and that I can introduce into it most anything without it slowly dying. 😂😂
At 2:41 what are those Christmas 🎄 trees kinda things growing from the rock ?
I just gave you the 500 like. I once wrote for practical fish keeping. I was amazed that people wrote books based on on nothing , and plagiarised other peoples work
Did this guy just say i had a reef addiction? 😑 sub
At 00:53 seconds what type of fish is that?
Still a good video
there was this german guy in a forum who kept on replying on mutliple posts to a point where he started bashing & demeaning reefers 😂😂😂. he did keep a nice large volume reef tank for many years. but this individual needed someone to take the legs off his pedistool
I've been in saltwater tanks since 1986 and have never stopped I have a 17-year-old hippo Tang I'm not a quitter I love saltwater this article is not about me
People over complicate this hobby. This is facts. They also tend to forget keeping a reef tank isn't paying attention to the live stock instead we are the keepers of water. I look at it like this. A closed marine eco system is like a toilet if you don't flush the toilet it's going to get pretty disgusting quick.
The reef hobby definitely has its core rules, but it is totally up to preference and personal choice.
failure is part of the process, but the reward is well worth the price of failure.
Before i watch this i already feel attached with the title and i dont even have a reef tank yet :) im kidding!
Wait.. witches arent real!?
Yo también moví mi tanke de un sitio a otro prácticamente se ve mejor donde lo deje sin pedir permiso es de200 gal luce de lujo ahora donde está Seve por toda la casa donde estés 💯
One thing why you will fail is by putting angelfish's in aquariums way to early, in a new big arrival aquarium tank.

Tell me about it… 😅
Ryan. I found out that fish definitely need to be kept wet. They don't do too well on a carpet for very long
I was today years old when I learnt this 😂
@@PrestigeReef great vid bud 👌
Funny thing is though, witches are real! Now using the earth is flat example is much better.
I started reefing in 1997, the I.Q level in those days of reefers seemed pretty high. The information shared was generally of high quality. Over time, the barrier to entry to the hobby has reduced. This seems to correlate with an anecdotal shift downwards in I.Q points. These lower I.Q. individuals are usually too stupid to realise the information they are sharing is incorrect. On the plus side, there is a healthy supply of quality used equipment for sale 🙂
Tfw witches are still real😢
Witches are deff real 😂
