I know they're hard working guys taking care of their families, I just wish someone could come up with a better method to catch shrimp other than dragnetting. It's terrible for fisheries in general. Until then, these boys gotta do what they gotta do and I dig it.

I worked on shrimpers out of the Port of Brownsville, Tx in the late 60’s. Not terribly hard work, good pay and great food. Unfortunately, not always the best captains but for a summer job, not bad.

I love the idea of sustainably harvesting crabmeat, however there are several studies carried out by the University of Miami that have shown that the minimum mortality of crabs that have both claws removed is higher than 60%. Also they state that it is very unlikely for such a crab to ever re-enter fishery due toe other factors such as predation and the long molding times. Mortality significantly decreased when crabs were only harvested at low water temps. Thanks for the great film, it's just not always as brilliant as it seems. Still better than importing farmed crab meat from Asia I guess!

Our native domestic shrimp species are so delicious, but unfortunately our local fisheries are having problems with invasive Asian species of everything including shrimp. Their larger species of tiger shrimp are amazing size wise but like all things Asian have little flavor. Of course, if your buying from the big box outlets like Sams or Costco's those shrimp are imported from terrible land locked shrimp farms bred in putrid waters, toxic for consumption, but that's what your buying. Remember REAL Flavorful shrimp? no.. i mean blow your doors off with every bite?.. chances are.. nope! I myself have not had amazing shrimp since the 1980s. and again, im not talking about good shrimp, im talking AMAZING shrimp. both size and flavor. flesh that pop with every bite. I doubt most people especially young people who dont in regions with local fisheries have even any familiarity with what shrimp actually taste like. we need to support our local domestic fisheries.

There is alot of clueless fisherman out there, commercial fish is recorded to every pound sold, for people who dont have a fishing license so they can eat fish.
