Welcome to Tales from the Tinkerage.
My name is Andy Pugh and I like to tinker, make things, fix things, build things, modify things and every other variation on doing stuff to other stuff. I do a lot of DIY at home from quite big jobs like fitting a kitchen or bathroom to small jobs like putting up pictures. If something is broken I will try and fix it rather than replacing it. I like playing with wood, metal (I would like to do a lot more of this), plastic, electronics, LEGO, robotics, etc. I don't consider myself as an expert in anything but rather as a jack or many (definitely not all) trades. I'm continually amazed at what the maker community produces and I'm using this channel to chronicle the things I do now, some of the things I have done in the past and more importantly my journey into the maker community rabbit-hole.
I have two other channels, the first is where I aim to put videos I make that don't fit here or on the others: PhysicsMad.

TFTT076 Bosch Drill Unboxing & First Impressions
My trusty old Dewalt 18V combi drill is nearing the end of it's useful life so time came to replace it.
After much research, trawling the internet and asking friends and family for their recommendations I eventually settled on the Bosch GSB 18V-55 from Screwfix for just a penny shy of £100. www.screwfix.com/p/bosch-gsb-18v-55-18v-2-0ah-li-ion-coolpack-brushless-cordless-drill-driver/242kh
It's also available from Amazon with bits and there are further reviews there. This is an Amazon affiliate link: amzn.to/3uMMW4s
In the video I check out the drill for the first time and put it up against the aging Dewalt. So have a look and see how they compare and whether I like it or not.

Thoughts From The Tinkerage Episode 020 - 42 Lessons from Figments Made

The maker community recently lost one of it's best friends in Sharon from Figments Made. I considered her a friend. She was the epitomy of a maker. She was a teacher. In this podcast I share just 42, or so, lessons that I have learned from Sharon. I'm sorry for some of the longer than normal gaps and the sometimes slightly under par voice; recording this was difficult. I hope you understand. Ra...

Finally someone posted where those 2 "C" gaskets go! One question: Does it matter wheather the adheasive side is up or down??
I don't think it matters but I have found putting them in as shown works well. It also matches what I found the first time I opened our Dyson.
@@TalesFromTheTinkerage Much appreciated!
I’m hoping you will be making some more videos?
I have the same dewalt. Similar issues. Mainly the chuck went on mine. I love Bosch but a bit out of my price range at the moment. I’m looking at perhaps Ryobi.
I bought a length of plastic pipe and cut it into bits to form a Zed Z shape, then used that to vent it outside through the hole in the wall. It's the same diameter as the machine hole, so pushed straight in. No more plastic corrugated dust collecting flexible pipe!
Nice workshop
Been thinking of getting a small sander like this for sharpening hand tools and small wood item sanding. Do you recommend this make and model? Also is it built well and is good quality?
For small wood item sanding it is absolutely perfect in my opinion. Pretty much all the ones that look like this are made in the same factory with just a few slight differences like styles of knobs, colour and shape of the tables. There's only a small variation in price so just look out for one that suits your pocket and perhaps colour, if that's important to you. I have sharpened with it but I now have a Sorby Pro-edge which is in a different league for that. With the Sealey you would need to make jigs to get consistent angles but it will work. It's a fraction of the price of the Sorby. I hope that helps. Reach out if you have further questions.
@@TalesFromTheTinkerageThanks for your detailed reply and it sounds like this would come in handy as I have a gardening business and keen on DIY so sharpening small hand tools and small woodworking is my thing. Would you say this is better quality than the other makes in a similar league? Where do you get the spare sanding discs and belts from? How do you install them?
I've seen a few versions in friends' workshops and they really are much of a muchness. I bought this one because it was the cheapest I could find as I only had a limited budget when I bought it. Belts and discs are easy to find. Most places that sell abrasives will sell them. TBH I use Amazon as I have a Prime account and they'll normally come next day. I've not changed the disc yet, I mostly use the belt, and I think it's adhesive iirc rather than velcro as on a random orbital sander. To change teh belt you take the side off and release the tension. It's screws rather than knobs but it's only a 2 minute job. I've seen one guy who leaves the side off as he changes belts regularly for rough sharpening chisels, it's doable but sketchy. For something like lawn mower blades it would be excellent. Secatuers might be trickier unless they come apart but that's the same for most sharpening systems for them, in my experience. @@mattseymour8637
Hi. Great vid. Why do you have to do the tweezer part? Just curious. Thx.
Don't need to go through all that Octopus screwdriver Hoopla on that HEPA filter cover.. Just pop the front lock up then work the side locks one at a time from under the cover lifting while your prying the cover away.
If you like tinkering and have the Model A version of this calculator, you can change the software by altering the jumpers inside, including upgrading it to the Casio fx-991 ES. Casio realised the consequences of this so removed this ability on the B model.
Cheers mate 👍
My favourite bit was... "Yeeaahh..rubber glove!" Also, thank you for helping me to fix my tap 😊
sound is desperate..had to turn off
As the disclaimer stated at the start, it's a small fully tiled bathroom, aka an audio engineers worst nightmare.
@@TalesFromTheTinkerage Take a look at the mic placement fella. Muffled...thats not the bathroom. Its facing down... All good. Keep up the helpful vids tho.. couldn't listen to this one without straining in parts...my hearing is 100% :)
A great little saw. Specs and appearance change from time to time when on sale and country to country. I did change the band from 6 x 6tpi to 8 x 14tpi, it gave a cleaner cut. The motor is a little under powered, 250w in my case, so don't push it. One big complaint was the upper bearing at the back of the band was under sized, no way would it support the band, so I fitted a larger one. No big deal for me but average Joe may not know. My 2c worth.
That's useful input. Thank you!
Why not change the other third disc filter on the lower right of the machine or is that only the DC14 Animal that has that?
Mine is the DC14 Animal but it only has the two filters.
Anyone got a video on how to attatch a 15m universal hose in these ?
Not that I have seen.
Thank you
You're welcome
You ok? You haven’t updated in ages.
Sorry about that. The human malware and some family stuff has put making, and making videos particularly, onto a back burner.
@@TalesFromTheTinkerage we will be waiting. All the best 👍🏻
Handy tip: after you tighten the chuck turn it back 1 click to lock the chuck to prevent bits coming lose
That's a useful tip! Thank you.
Thank you very helpful
You're welcome!
hi, may i know of you use salted or unsalted butter?
That's a good question. Traditionally I'm fairly sure that it would be salted butter but I have only used unsalted butter for the last 30 years.
My hose does not go in that way as the wire is the other way round?
That's odd. All the ones I've seen are the same as the one in the video. Are you in the UK?
@@TalesFromTheTinkerage Yeah Aberdeen, it just won’t screw in the way you do it, the metal of the vent goes the other way 🤷🏽♂️ I don’t know if I’m doing it wrong but I’ve tried countless times and different ways but still nothing, I thought the hose was the wrong one but apparently there all universal, my brain is burst 😂🤦🏻♂️
@@neilbuchan1489 That's really odd. All the ones I've seen have the wire in the same arrangement as the threads on a screw. I'm all short of suggestions I'm afraid. Other than maybe picking up one from Toolstation/Screwfix to compare, knowing that you can take it back if it doesn't solve things.
one thing I do is leave the plug in sink, the plughole attracts screws like a magnet...
That's a very good tip. It's something I normally do although I do forget now and then.
I don't know about you Andy but everytime I see the huge workshops in the US have, I get serious workshop envy. Us in the UK are really limited with space. It's so annoying.
Totally. I remember seeing a "tiny shop" video from the US once and it was bigger than a standard UK single garage.
Really enjoyed this series, I too have a small shed and like you juggle tools and things around. I found your re-org inspiring and it has given me some ideas on sorting mine out. thank you.
Awesome, thank you!
I love shop tours😀😀😀
Me too! Thanks for popping by.
Thank you; saved my bacon. Removing hose to get access.
Bacon has to be cared for! I'm glad you found it useful.
I have been researching about these vents a bit. Apparently it's best to use metal for longevity and safety against fire
I agree that metal would be better on both counts. And in some settings it is a requirement. The PVC hoses are very common in UK households. They are cheap to replace and shouldn't be at risk of fire.
I've had a plastic one for over 25 years and never had any issues.
They're not as flexible... My hotpoint machine doesn't have threads to turn pipe securely into machine but a metal connector and then have to use cable tie.
My Casio model fx-991ES which battery 🔋 is suitable and where it is available
It uses an LR44 (or G13) which are readily available from hardware stores, supermarkets, Amazon and eBay. Once you replace it you will need to reset the calculator: CLR - ALL - YES. (shift 9, 3, =) Don't skip that part! I hope that helps.
those jars screwed under that shelf are an excellent idea!
Thank you! I'd like to say it's mine but it's been in use for most of the 20th Century as far as I know.
medium agnostic is good
Thank you!
Working my way through the long watch later list (I guess yours is insanely long as well) and I must say that in general I prefer this style with a video containing all the prompts, rather than having Instagram clogged up with posts every day for a month. Next year I might do something similar.
I think I may try and do this again next year. Yes, my watch later list is huge!
Great idea Thanks ,also if you fold the top over before clipping , stop creepy crawlies from making their home in them
Thank you. That's a good idea. I've not had an issue with creepy crawlies myself, but I can see how that might help if someone does.
As a Bosch maniac myself, I am pleased to know that you have made a correct choice.
Thank you!
I'd like to order a Maker's Crêpe, please...

Hello Andy, Sorry I missed your experimenting... Hopefully see you tomorrow... Cheers. Paul,,
Thanks Paul! Yes, see you later!
Do you think you would have considered ryobi
I have a number of friends who swear by Ryobi as a system. However, when I've had them in my hands I haven't been that impressed with them so I didn't include them in my search.
Great video, and it's good to have you back in action, Andy! I only have on Bosch tool, but it does not disappoint. Thanks for the thorough look at this drill!
Thank you and thank you for taking a look. If I had the cash I'd have more Bosch tools.
Glad to see you back man !
Thank you sir!
Looks like it's a good bit of kit. Something to consider when my Makita 18v packs up eventually. Nice vid Andy 👍
Thank you. My DeWalt replaced a Makita. Makita have a good range of tools but their marketing has led much to be desired so I tend to avoid them. If I had the cash I would get more Bosch tools.
Good find and should serve you well for another 15 years ;-)
Thanks. I do hope so!
Nice selection. I have 2 of the 18V Bosch drills and a driver and really like them. Although since getting the 12V versions, Bosch also, I find I use them even more. Smaller and lighter with almost the same power.
I'd love to go 12V and I suspect it would become my go to tool. They're not overly available over here, and not as good value as the 18V, or rather this 18V was really cheap. Do you find the smaller chuck capacity an issue at all?
