I love teaching people how to repair their cars and trucks.
My original motivation: MPG. We all want better numbers, but do we really know how to get them? Let us learn that to get results is to have fun! There are tricks that it took many mechanics decades of experience to figure out and perfect.
This is why I'm into cars since I got my first car. It's been my passion ever since.
Since then, I've become even more passionate about car repair. So much car repair will effect your car's miles per gallon, so by becoming a mechanic it's an extension of my goal all those years ago.

1.8 Liter Ecotech Oxygen Sensor Replacement on Chevy, GM, and Opel Upstream Oxygen Sensor Bank 1
This Oxygen Sensor was making the engine crash and die. most of the time it 2aa accurate. I spent all of 6 hours driving around with my friend before I spotted that occasionally the upstream sensor had reading which would keep calling for more fuel or less and less even though the downstream oxygen sensor, after the catalytic converter was pegged lean or rich, and while the catalytic converter does change the fuel readings of an oxygen sensor the pattern wasn't matching up.
This video is more about how to remove and replace the oxygen sensor but I always at least discuss why. Codes aren't accurate for replacing oxygen sensors too often to replace it just on a code. You might get lucky. If you don't want to get lucky get smart. Dive into all my oxygen sensor videos before buying expensive parts which could be a waste of money.
This is my favorite oxygen sensor video for studying and understanding the sensor tracing patterns. Oxygen Sensors and 4 Stages of Death:

Dang I run an ounce per gallon in my 93 Jeep 4.0
Wow. That's very different. You learned that's what it likes?
@@DENicholsAutoBravado Yep it runs better at that mix in hot weather
I'll have to remember that. I do occasionally run into fans of older Jeeps! I fixed up a 60's or 70's something once. They couldn't figure out how to keep it on. I replaced all the vaccum lines that were leaking vacuum and it ran tons better for a customer. It still didn't quite have a steady idle but the customer was so happy it was much easier to keep the engine on. Lol Sometimes, a lot of times, I want to fix something farther but you can't argue with a happy customer. It had to almost be 2k rpms probbaly just to stay on before I gave it some TLC. Dipping below 1100 rpm was sketchy after that. Much better.
They were usually DIY and figured with the big issues out of the way they could probbaly take if farther from there. 😁
I seem to remember he bringing me another of his collection a few weeks later. I mostly know 1996 and newer cars much better so whenever I got to competently work older tech it was quite satisfying.
Just change the oil and filter often . Don’t wait 7 k miles 5 k max
Mobil 1 filters move oil so much slower they cause startup engine damage over the life of an engine. They're completely fired from any vehicles I run at this point. I don't wait 7k miles except 1 engine with a very high oil capacity. The oil is so clean at 5k miles it puts everything else I own to shame. Things can be engineered to go farther than 5k but you have to respect your use case.
Dude, to dark
Lol. Made this video 7 years ago. Not going back to shoot it again. I think the white balance was off. I had less light other videos which showed up brighter. Weird but true. 😁

Have a rattling sound from engine , wonder if this will help .. rattling get quieter as I run engine for 20 mins but ? Idk
No... I don't think so. Something is worn out. Usually in the cams. This product helps with cylinder compression issues.
Do you know they make a oil stabilizer meant for motorcycles, right?
I didn't! What is it? Also, some motorcycle oils, by their consistency are made that way with no mixing needed. Trouble with these additives is the reduce your oils other additives. It's probably why I've done so well with additives and cars. See, what I do different is that I use less so that it helps instead of knocking down the % of all other additives. With the transmission and engine using the same additives it makes additives which include traditional car additives a bad idea. Long story short, all additives shares here are just oil. They aren't any of the chemicals in the additive package for the motorcycle or cars.

After using the product my old engine started reich up.
Yes, makes sense. If you don't have enough compression, this product can help with that immediately. The 1st engine I got it for in 2019 would sometimes misfire and struggle if cold, but after this product? Not at all! 😁👍
Oils don't need additives added today. Change the oil every 3000 4000 miles. No worries at all
That takes great care of a car engine, but this motorcycle requires more frequent changes based on my testing of it's oil. Maybe my engine wasn't built well enough but my oil analysis recommended much more frequent oil changes. 1000 miles was pushing it.
@DENicholsAutoBravado I change my motorcycle oils at 3000 miles. They are both air cooled, buy it's hot here in Florida
The fact you were talking to someone in person shocked me 😂
I do usually make solo videos, tis true! Lol 🤣

What year is your nissan frontier and do you know anything about hose vacuum systems under the upper intake
I haven't seen that pulled apart in several years, but there is 1 tube under there that's really hard to deal with if it isn't hard and old to get straight back on. My buddy has never seen it leak if it was old. If it was new and young it could take hours to slip back in while installing because it could flop around wrong and not get sealed up.
I put the year of my truck and the years of many Nissan designs with the same engine in the description of many of my videos. 2004 is the latest that my videos is helpful on for the American Nissan Frontier. Nissan used the same engine as late as 2005 outside of America. There are some xterras and minivans by Nissan which also use this engine. The engine bay isn't the same on the minivan but the knowledge to the engine is still accurate. That minivan is angled for maximum pain to work on! They largely don't get fixed for big problems because of this.
Thank you
The prices are so cheap
Probably varies by zipcode.
Yes. North Carolina is still better than California! At my new office, the California and Chicago people are both like, whoa! The gas is half as much!
I clean my iridium plugs maybe every 2 years. Will I clean it often if I add tcw3 in my fuel?
The way I use TCW3, I haven't notice any spark plug issues, I do have a follow on question about how much you drive in 2 years though.
@@DENicholsAutoBravado I drive 8,000 miles a year pure city traffic. That’s about twice the engine is in operation due to traffic. I live in the tropics.
👍
I've been using engine restore ever since I was 16 years old now I'm 50 and 34 years later it still works..best product ever..thanks restore
I like prolong and bestline plus duralube but you can not go wrong if you stay with restore only.
Recent scientific testing by the Motor Oil Geek. He checked a bunch of additives. Prolong is on the very naughty list. It has what hurt many cars 25 years ago in it. Back when it was all snake oil. . . In my opinion. Now, I do use additives, but what I learned from the motor oil geek is why I've done so well. I've always used less than recommended. Otherwise you thin out the additives you already have and need from the oil you bought.
Lookinh forward to my oil change
Nice. Anything wrong with your engine? I'm looking forward to my 1st oil change too. New to me 2018 Mitsubishi Mirage. Already changed it's spark plugs. I've put a little over 3000 miles on it since buying it. I've gotten as high has 52 miles per gallon out of it. I love great gas mileage. It's spark plugs were the best I've ever seen for worn spark plugs. Brown. Fuel injected almost never turns the blades perfectly brown. Generally that means perfect combustion.
Clown….obviously has a head gasket issue.
The clues are there, but no it didn't. Just moisture from short tripping. It stopped building moisture like this when pandemic rules eased and it drove farther than the grocery store. Loved exploring Germany in that little car!
What charger it used lost mines
A "fellow" mechanic broke the hook on mine and made it torture to use about 7 years ago. So... 🤷♂️
Hi DE Nichols, I'm hoping you can tell me the correct way to release the fuel lines/clips off the top 2 points of the sending unit?? And is the method for that the same at the other end where the fuel lines connect to steel lines? Thanks in advance & Best Regards, Jack
It really is as simple as push them in, wiggle and release....but... dirt can cause issues. Silicon spray is good for cleaning out some dirt and improving slip. If you push the lines deeper together the "quick release" gets easier to push the opposite way. They work exactly like an air chuck. You know like when you hook your air tools up and off...but the moving part is inside instead of outside.
Did you use both cans of BG intake cleaner in one combustion camber cleaning service?
No. I think that 2ne can was still on my cart from the last one I did. That video was like 8 years ago though so I'm not sure.
You need to upload more brother! Commander Vlogs here! Got you featured on the new show!
Oh really? Recently featured? Whoa! Yeah... I have 2x the subs since last upload... there's definitely an audience! The comments are growing on my evergreen content! Not slowing!
You should always replace the thermostat and related hoses when you do service unless otherwise indicated. An ounce of prevention is a pound of etc etc. .
That's good advise. Already changed the thermostat prior to this. 😁💪
Also get metal parts cleaned from the rust.
The broken harmonic balancer could have been avoided by heating it and using penetrating oil. If you did use that balancer its going to be out of balance. I've learned with Japanese engines they run best when in harmony. I'm creeping up on 300k and I know we are going to need timing and cooling here in the SW USA. I've been thoroughly impressed by this truck. Great video but remember heat, oil and time will break all bolts and balancers free without breaking them (most of the time) pun intended.
Oh. I used tons of penetrating oil. Balancer still worked fine. I wouldn't call it broken.
I really do like this product. It’s help out on a few of my older cars.
I've had a lot of old cars, only 2 of which benefited. I'm a fan if the car needs it. 👍
I use less than 1/2 a quart, never had a clutch slip or clutch lag, just use a little to keep life happy.
Yeah. I have new clutch material on my list of things to do. I don't think mine lasted very well to be so sensitive. Might be why my oil wears out so fast too since it's all swimming in the same oil as the engine, isn't it? My bad, I know cars much better than motorcycles. Tell me what I don't know if you don't mind. The clutch pack, is it in the oil too or no?
I recently started buying the STP Extended Life filters for my new to me GMC Sierra when GM switched from the PF63 to the PF66 on the 2.7 and 3.0 liter truck engines. Not too many other options other then Fram which is more money for not much more quality, or NAPA which again is more $$$. The thing to consider is not just the quality of the filter (which I am convinced that the STP Extended Life is just fine) is the quality of the oil. Mobil 1 is not the best oil for what they charge I'm sorry. And if your buying it because it's a package deal at a box store that's no bueno! Valvoline Extended Performance or Pennzoil Platinum are cheaper and better oil then Mobil 1. Even Castrol Edge too is better although I prefer the Valvoline or Pennzoil.
Today's bottle looks different. On yours does it say up to 25 gallons, or exactly 25 gallons? I think you are supposed to put the entire bottle in.
I've tried the whole bottle versus measured. Didn't work any better, so save your money and match it up.
Too much PEA will dirty a clean engine.
Wow. If I was so concerned with spilling oil, I think Id ride a bicycle. This is an old video, wonder what his views are on the world today.
In Germany no oil can be on the outside of your engine. It's amazing how much more their parts rust in their engine bays then in America were a little seepage just keeps the rust at bay.
What tool are you using for measuring
The torque app is free. I paid $5 to run it and free a LOT of years ago. It works with any basic wifi or bluetooth OBD ii basic scanner. I recommend bluetooth. If your android or ios likes wifi for internet, hooking wifi to an OBD ii can cut off your internet connection.
What is it people have against reading? Everyone seems hellbent on using these products in every possible way - EXCEPT as directed in the instructions! Read the instructions! They tell you how to use it. It does not tell you to add it to every tank of gas.
That's absolutely correct! PEA will dirty a clean engine a little, but clean a little off a dirty engine. Running a little every other oil change seems fine to me. Some people run it more, but if like most engines, it's pretty clean, there's no need to run these things all the time.
Does it matter if your top dead center in intake or exhaust? If so how do you know your in intake?
It definitely matters!
Hello DE , I have a question , I have a 2018 chevy Equinox 1.5 LI Turbo, it is sputtering when turned , producing a sulfur smell, white smoke and consuming antifreeza which had bot done it before, my mechanic recpmmended to chabgr the turbo but the same things keep on happening any idea please of what might the problem coukd be?
Wow how is that vehicle even running did you see that in the oil cap and hole wow. Mayonnaise man.
When the local shop that let me work on my cars there for a small fee opened up again after they stopped all getting COVID, I went through the engine. Thrust bearings worn, but oil was clean. Took just the valve cover and oil pan off because of small leak repairs, but no signs of moisture. Is this engine in great shape? No, but after I started using it to see Germany's beautiful sites instead of just trips for groceries, the engine was able to get up to temp and the cap stopped filling with moisture froth. In humid areas, short tripping has caused a lot of issues on Fords as well.
Oh yeah, saved this car from misfiring and having all kinds of issues and got it going as a fun little car.
Interesting video! I picked up a can of this at a sale somewhere and put it on a shelf in my garage. It is probably 6-7 years old but has never been opened. Thinking of using some in an older engine, after shaking it up for a long time. I read an earlier comment mentioning that metal bits inside Restore that are meant to help restore compression are hard on engine bearings. This made me wonder if this product is meant to be put in and then run the car for one or two tanks of gas (long enough for it to work some magic) then get a complete oil change. Or, only add a small amoint 'with' an oil change. Kind of like Seafoam only different (I believe it is recommended to get an oil change after about one tank of gas driving with seafoam in the crankcase, due to its thinning/cleaning properties, can be hard on emgine seals). Thoughts?
1st, I don't know if this product can store that long. Try pouring it all out if there's anymore residue in the bottle than whatever would be slow to drip out, it has gone bad. Additives in oil packages go bad, I do not know if this product has those issues. 2nd. Don't use it on a perfectly healthy engine. Use it on something older or something with a compression issue. My nearly 500k mile Corolla did great with this product just like the Hyundai Atos did in the video. I used it for years driving lots of freeway miles. If it was a younger engine performing totally normally I wouldn't use it. 3rd. It does not work unless it's actively in your oil and synthetics typically don't work with it either. My only exception, if it's not too thick is Shell's T line of oils for trucks. Used that in the Corolla and even the semisynthetic worked with Engine Restorer. Total surprise. Normal synthetic car oils DO NOT WORK with Engine Restore. 4th. Consequences. When it's time to change your oil I need engine flushes just to really clean it out. Long before a normal oil change interval engine Restorer will turn my engine into an oil burning engine. For a few thousand miles all was usually well so long as I had done the engine flush. To be clear Engine Restorer typically took a not burning oil engine to burning usually within 3000 miles.
Why would I still use it with all those issues? 37 miles per gallon instead of 27. That's a huge difference! Worth all the trouble in my last comment.
So is the lucas upper cylinder lube better or not? Your rambling and im not getting any info.
Lucas Upper cylinder lubricant is SAE 30 oil. Try my playlist in the subject. You are watching the end of a series potentially missing some core concepts. Or, maybe I did just explain it poorly. What Fuel Additives Improve Gas Mileage?: czcams.com/play/PLh_yB9HJ4Gi6RK7jJtd8xZHMqdYveHbSH.html
@@DENicholsAutoBravado Thanks 👍
You are most welcome. Have you had a chance to watch any? At the beginning I didn't know Lucas was just SAE 30 oil. Nondetergent, what engines used before oil filters was the way to go. If your gas tank is exceptionally dirty either products could break a fuel pump cleaning the tank, but then the next fuel pump would last much longer, or more usually the clean out just makes everything last longer. Only a problem that I had because of contmainated gas ruining by gas tank around the 1st video i replaced my fuel pump 3 times for what tiny parts of my gas tank I couldn't clean out. If you've watched some of those videos, I have what I do now, which is better than some of those videos.

Engine Restorer kept that engine running on less gasoline from about 420 to 493k mileage on the chassis. The engine was replaced about 293k miles ago which a 150k to 250k mile engine. That engine is a rare one. Most don't get over the 200k's! Got robbed not getting to 500k miles. Been a dream to take a car that far for over 2 decades. Took care of yhat car for a a customer for 200k of its miles and took over restoring it when they weren't willing to make it safe on the road anymore. It needed all of its suspension replaced front and back and it still creaked a bit. It's probably because I cheated out and left the old d links in there. They weren't terrible, just not quiet. Lol My new tires, new suspension, new brakes, none of it was wasted. I needed it all for the maximum response to make that accident less serious and to save the life of the other driver who didn't look both ways before crossing the street.
Catalytic, plug? Er.
Yes! I had this issue already I think! When enough gasoline built up and gummed up on the cat clog... I know when it blew up! It really was violent! It was loud. The car limped for a while until I did more maintenance. I took a look at the cat when resealing the oil pan gasket... had to remove some of the exhaust to do this anyway, and I found the cleared, formerly clogged hole in the honey comb. When it blew there was spark of heat, metal and explosion results careening down the road behind me in a beautiful German country side!
Two stroke oil helps to seal the compression rings and reduces carbon.
Absolutely. That's what it's for. 👍
I put a small small amount of pennzoil two stroke to my riding lawnmower gas that I remove the ethanol from personally. I have noticed since 2019 that my Briggs and Stratton 21 hp does not use any oil from the crankcase and the oil does not turn black and the oil looks like it just came out of the bottle. My YT3000 was made in 2006 and I bought it for 200.00.
That's incredible. 😁
@@DENicholsAutoBravado Its not bragging if you can prove it and I can show the results.
I just like how much these little changes can make a difference. I even throw a little in on a rental car. I want the best performance and gas mileage everywhere I go. I use TCW3 the most. It's better for these 4 stroke engines.
Nice video. Bank one is the passenger side , bank 2 is the drivers side. Also tie wraps work good when having to secure wires.
How much should be used for a 2 cylinder motorcycle?
If the full 4 cylinder can us for most likely a 4 quart engine, figure it based on how many quarts of oil your motorcycle takes. Takes 1 quart? Don't put more than a quarter of a bottle in and don't overfill with your normal oil afterwards. I've found it works best with conventional oil so now you can save some money on your oil choice. Lol
If one side was out of timing it would not run.
Interesting. I've mostly seen engines perfectly in time. Having them out of time is very unusual. You've probably seen something I haven't. I hear you. I've seen engines, which were a couple teeth off run before. Just not as well. I was shocked when I figured out a PT Cruiser was 7 teeth off. It could hardly idle and needed a lot of gas to stay on and also cruised poorly. The customer disagreed, just fix the idle, he asked. It cruises and speeds up fine. Plenty of power he said. No... his car was gutless, I thought. They had changed the timing belt themselves and I guess built up in their mind that they didn't cause it issues. Have you worked on something more sensitive before?
What size of the tool?
They literally sale oxygen sensor removing tools. Last I checked there was 2 sizes. You may want to look up your specific vehicle, but this car took the most common oxygen sensor socket removal tool. I've needed the other so little it's rusting.
Is this like the Hyundai accent?
Nope. Super low count model mostly sold in South Africa. (At least 1 year) The Hyundai Atos. You'll see them enough in Europe. I used it effectively in a 400k+ mile Corolla. Pre 2000, 2000 and later engines have vvti... engine restore isn't recommended on any engine with variable timing with small oil passages.
Oil thickens as it ages
As unused oil? Detergents can fall out of suspension and get thicker. Oil aging with use gets thinner.
@@DENicholsAutoBravado No it's because the molecules that make the oil thinner when the oil is cold are smaller and evaporate before the molecules that are longer and bigger
...oil is complex isn't it! Okay, so cold flow is worse when it's old? That I definitely believe on experience. Don't want older more used oil on freezing days.
At 53 seconds into the video, you allowed the white seal tab from the mouth of the bottle fall into your gas tank... 🤦🏽♀️
Yep! Didn't know until after I uploaded the video. Good catch! Whenever I change someone's fuel pump, there's a chance a few are in there. Never hurt anything. 🤷♂️ Those lid covers, meant to hold back petroleum like fluids, don't disintegrate even in caustic gas.
