“How To”: 2016 Scion iA Front Brake Pads and Rotors
The Scion iA, built for only one year and based off the Mazda2, is a great little econo-car for those on a budget.
It’s fairly reliable, and parts for most regular maintenance repairs are pretty inexpensive.
The front brakes are easy to maintain, and for those in need, here’s a simple walkthrough on how to do the job yourself. For first timers, give yourself an hour or two of time just in case something doesn’t go smoothly.

Changing the spark plugs on a vehicle is one of the staples of basic car maintenance. Modern iridium plugs can last up to 100,000 miles, so the frequency of changing them is far less, but just as vital. A bad spark plug can lead to serious and even catastrophic engine failure. Thankfully, it’s an easy job that only requires a few tools.

The wheel hub and bearing assembly on your vehicle are vital components to the drivetrain. They are what actually connect your wheels to the vehicle. Most modern vehicles use what is known as a hub and bering assembly, meaning that the hub - what the wheels connect to - and the bearing - what allows the wheel to spin smoothly - come as a packaged unit. These are fairly easy replace, and should ...

Let's just be honest for a moment... Gen 3 LS motors are going to leak oil. It's just a fact. Now that we can admit that, we can also fix the problem. Most oil leaks on the Gen 3 LS's come from one fo four places: 1. The valve covers, specifically the driver side. 2. The oil pressure sensor due to the o-ring going bad. 3. The Rear Main Seal (have fun removing the transmission, or shelling out t...

The parking brake on your vehicle plays a vital role. Not only does it keep your vehicle from moving, it also relives your transmission and the rest of your drivetrain from holding the entire weight of the vehicle on its own. It is a key safety element, and maintenance on it should not be ignored. As the miles and years pass by, the tensioning cable for the parking brake can loosen up, resultin...

One of the common issues on the GMT800 lineup concerns the shift linkage bushing on the transmission. It is known to fail at any moment, making it impossible for you to change gears, put the truck in neutral, or even in park. A temporary fix is to use a couple of zip-ties to hold the shift cable to the linkage, but again, this is purely a temporary fix. And while most corner auto parts stores w...

As your engine runs it produces heat, soot, and grease. The oil in the engine collects all of these and passes them into the oil filter while also supplying lubrication to the various moving engine parts. But in doing so, it breaks down and loses the ability to do its job as well. Thus, changing the oil and its filter become necessary. An engine oil change is one of the most important bits of m...

A few recommendations here: Remove jewelry such as rings and watches for safety purposes, so they don’t catch. Wear mechanics gloves to protect your hands and long sleeves to protect your arms from sharp objects, heat from the vehicle and hot oil. Wear safety glasses. An extension for screwing off the drain plug is not needed. If fact, it made things worse, as per the video, with spilling of oil, including the potential of the drain plug landing in the bucket of hot oil. After loosening the drain plug, you can slowly unscrew the plug by hand, with gloves on, then quickly remove the plug away from the drain hole when it is free from the threads. Better drain basins are available and cheap. Some are equipped with a drain saddle for the dirty oil filter when it is removed from the vehicle. The drain plug doesn’t have to be reinstalled before draining the oil filter. In fact, you will get additional drainage of old oil from the drain plug hole when the old filter is removed. Start with clean surfaces and avoid cross-contamination. Engine bays should be cleaned before oil changes, reducing the likelihood of contaminants introduced into the engine while the dipstick and oil fill cap are removed. The dipstick should be removed and cleaned of old oil, before dipping it back into the engine freshly filled with new oil. As others have pointed out here, checking oil levels when the engine is running is a no-no. If you take roads less travelled, you’ll want to ensure that oil changes are done properly!

I've got both a Sierra and a Ford Ranger. The Ranger doesn't have a hook, just the cable, and there's never been an issue with it (I let down the tire and lubricate the cable and mechanism once a year). I was surprised when I found out about the hook on my GM, and of course, it's totally seized. Add unnecessary mechanical complexity to a dirt and corrosion-prone area and there's always gonna be trouble!
