  • If there is one thing that many people associate with someone being an "Overlander", it is that they use a roof top tent. While that idea is hugely misguided, and misinformed, there truly are some benefits to having a roof top tent as a part of your gear.
Sleeping on the ground, even with a ground pad, can be uncomfortable, have a greater risk of dealing with weather elements, and even present challenges as to where you might stay. A roof top tent gets you off the ground, keeps your sleeping quarters to your vehicle, and allows you to "set up camp" almost anywhere, even in a rest area parking lot. Of course the major downside is that in order to move your vehicle, you have to close up the tent. The other major downside is price. An incredibly good ground tent can be had for just a couple hundred dollars, while RTT's have one of the widest price ranges for off-road minded accessories.
Thankfully, Smittybilt's Overlander series of RTT's tackles both of those issues by staying budget friendly (for a roof top tent), offering fantastic features, and also, very good quality.

were you able to open that tent to the side when you had it mounted on the Yakima Bars and Q30 Towers? Or did it open to the back?

I could open it to the side. The mounting bars on the tent can be rotated on the base to orient it to open either to the side or to the rear of the vehicle.

Why the switch from yakima bars mounted to the tonnneau cover to the new system?

Wanted the tent up a little higher and for it open off the side while still having space to open the saddle covers.
I’m actually planning to build another rack that will put it up a touch more and allow me to open the rear two panels.

I see you have a new rack that you mounted the tent to do you have a link to it or was it custom?
