"How To": Build a Chevy Avalanche Bed Rack for Under $100

  • If there. is one drawback to the Chevy Avalanche, it is the complete lack of aftermarket truck bed accessories that. will work with it. Even universal truck bed racks typically don't work, all due to the unique design of the Avalanche's bed.
    But, by building your own, you can get a unique design and save a ton of money on a bed rack that can be used for countless uses.
    If you have questions on any of the build, ask away in the comments!
    Materials used:
    1"x2" .125 Steel Channel (20 feet)
    3.5" 5/16's hex head bolts (8)
    5/16 flat washers (8)
    5/16 lock washers (8)
    5/16 nylok nuts (8)
    Tools:
    Welder
    Angle Grinder w/ cut off, grinding, and flap wheels (a hacksaw will work too but it's far more work)
    Speed square
    Something to mark the steel with (I used a punch to have a more accurate scratch line on the channel for cuts)

    I copied your Yakima set up on my 07 Avalanche. It works great but would like space under the rtt for extra storage. So I am going to try and copy this set up. Thank you very much for posting this.

      Well, tbh, I’m going to be redoing this one too sometime this spring. Just a few things I’ve come to be annoyed with that I plan to correct with the second design.

    Just bought an 07 avalanche and im exited to start messing with it. You have a very nice setup! If i may, i would sugest getting yout 3rd brake light signal from one of your rear tailights and not have to run the wireing on your sail panels. Nice job on the math for notching your angles, that would drive me crazy trying to figure them out.

    • @takeroadslesstraveled6505
      @takeroadslesstraveled6505  Před 2 lety

      I considered running the wire from a taillight, but it was honestly very easy to tie into the factory third brake light and run the wiring behind the panel. But, someone else may want to run it from the taillight, so it’s certainly a good suggestion.

      Not uplight, not taillights….
      But the trailer plug 🔌
      It’s made for additional lighting.
      And when the tents 🏕 not there
      It unplugs

      Discovered one obstruction this past weekend while camping. One of the side window awning rods can’t be used due to proximity to the roof basket. Other than that though, it’s great!

    I think I would just use a wide foot for the rack on the topside of the bed cover maybe with a rubber pad under the feet so not to damage the cover and then use something like a ratchet tie-down strap from the feet on the topside to go down and around and under the cover to secure it down to the cover that way you wouldn't have to worry about any drilling or any extra tools if you ever do needed to remove it. Honestly I don't know why not just to use the Yakima system and extended upward, unless it's just too unstable for that.

    • @takeroadslesstraveled6505
      @takeroadslesstraveled6505  Před 2 lety

      The issue with just going up with the Yakima setup is the number of mounting points. The more you have, the more points of potential failure you have. Plus, the question of HOW you go up using that setup arises.
      I do get your point on not damaging the covers though and drilling into them was a tough decision for me. But, there are things about this rack I’m not a big fan of and I’m going to make a new one this spring.

  • @jasonthomashorn4794
    @jasonthomashorn4794 Před 2 lety

    Did you consider making the rear support bolt in where the grab handles are? Then you would be able to remove at least 2 of the panels

    • @takeroadslesstraveled6505
      @takeroadslesstraveled6505  Před 2 lety +2

      Since making the rack, there are a couple things I want to change, the rear mounting location being one. I’m building a new rack in the spring and it will mount exactly how you’re suggesting, as well as put the tent just a little higher as well.

    • @jasonthomashorn4794

      @@takeroadslesstraveled6505 if you wanted a front point you can easily remove the triangle shaped drain screens on each side and probably fabricate mounting points and a bracket. I was going to explore that spot as well for my own project.

    You said in your last video you said the panels only hold 250 pounds. I’m 250 pounds and that means my wife can’t sleep in the rty with me. So I guess this is t a good setup for the average couple trying to go camping together.

    • @takeroadslesstraveled6505
      @takeroadslesstraveled6505  Před 7 měsíci +2

      250lbs each. Gotta listen to all the details. Myself and my dad (about 200lbs each) slept in the RTT (another 100lbs) for multiple nights on a camping trip and everything was just fine.
