Hi again dear Michelle, just wanted to share some good news with you. Very excited to say that I'm now playing my clarinet and sometimes the oboe too without the neck strap, and on the clarinet there are far less squeaks!! My hand and therefore finger position is improving, and I'm getting on a little better with crossing the break. Thank you for all you are teaching here, cos you have really helped me loads!! I have also bought a Rovner ligature and a Yamaha 4C mouthpiece for my clarinet, and the difference in tone is absolutely incredible!! I'm thrilled to say that every time I get my clarinet out now, I'm able to really play more and enjoy it!! In fact after I've swabbed it out and put my clarinet away, I find myself pining for it and wanting to start playing again just minutes later!! Such a beautiful instrument the clarinet truly is, and I'm thoroughly looking forward to my practice again tomorrow. God bless you dear Michelle, and I would love to join your mentoring community, it would be lovely to play with other clarinettists, it would be the icing on the cake for me!! 🤩

I was given a bass clarinet in grade 9 and no instructions in how to hold it. It also had a straighter neck so the mouth piece was almost at a tight angle to the body. I found it hard to blow into when holding ot vertically and the only way I could get comfortable was to play it off to my side like a sax. No one ever told me that this was incorrect. In grade 10 the other bass clarinet player and I were in the same class nd one of our 2 bass clarinets died and we needed and alto sax so I was given one of those to learn. In grade 11 they had too many altos and not enough tenor saxes so I learned it. I was asked to play a bass clarinet in one piece because we had 2 again but I didn't have reed for it, but my tenor reed worked, but not the other way around. IN grade 12 I stayed on the tenor but one song needed a soprano sax. Since I had done a bit of regular clarinet and knew the sax fingering they gave it to me to play. I loved the sound it made but there were more tenor parts. If you are going to double up I would not suggest bass clarinet and tenor sax, too damn heavy carrying 2. I only wish I had a reed player for a music teacher.

Thank you Michelle. On a previous video regarding the sizing of your reed you mentioned that in the upper register if your reed is too soft it could actually cut off the sound. I've been experiencing a similar problem but with the right hand notes (d,e with the octave key and g,a in the lower register). This generally happens after about a half hour of practice. Could this be a result of poor reed choice as well?

You might have just helped me figure out why I'm killing my bari sax reeds very quickly. I notice some vertical splits on a couple that laid flat side down, which were not there when I took them off the mouthpiece. Do you think this could be the cause, and if I were to face the back upwards could it fix this very expensive problem?

Hello, Thank you so much for this altissimo exercise. I have always had issues with my altissimo register and am eager to work on this exercise. I think in the video you played 5 notes (including low C)? Right out of the gate, I am only able to get 3 notes: • low C of course • I can’t get the clarion G • I can get the altissimo G • then the one above that - whatever that is Why, oh, why can’t I get that clarion G overtone!?!?!? Ideas?
