  • The Colossal Clarinet Choir was a 100+ clarinet choir which performed an outdoor concert in Portland Oregon in June 29, 2019 as part of the Clarinet Celebration. Amateurs and professionals enjoyed performing together under the baton of Jose Franch-Ballester and Barbera Heilmair Tenret. This arrangement, by Andrew Seigel, features Eb clarinet soloists Deborah Andrus and Michelle Anderson.

    This was a very fun concert, and the only time I have played with more than 100 clarinetists at once.

    That's a very high-class page turner you have there, Michelle!

      Probably the most over-qualified page turner in the world! So kind of him to help out.

    Hey Michelle, I went to musicians repair to try some new clarinet equipment and I did the mouthpiece. I switched from the b45 to the m30 and I made a discovery that made a difference for me. My b45 had a tooth guard and the m30 did not and here is what I discovered.
    When I tried the m30 without the tooth guard, the high notes came out more easily compared to the b45 with the tooth guard. I tried the tooth guard with the m30 and I shrilled more than I did without the tooth guard. My big discovery that I made was when I use a tooth guard, I tend to bite down on the reed more which made it harder for me to play the high altissimo notes and without the tooth guard, I don’t bite down on the reed so much and with my first mouthpiece, I had shallow teeth marks on my first mouth piece due to me biting down on my mouthpiece too much. I started to use the levers signature reeds and when I tried them for the first time, the reed made my clarinet sound rounder and more mallow according to my mom and my sound wasn’t so bright and loud compared to the vandoren traditional. The legere reeds changed the sound of my clarinet from bright to rounder and more mallow sound.

    Ah, the pitfalls of playing outdoors with a wind blowing. But you at least had a page turner/holder to do the job.

    Very cool. The bass clarinetist behind you is a dead ringer for Mark Dover of Imani Winds.

      Hi Stephen, that's because it IS Mark Dover. It was truly an All-Star Choir.

    Stellar performance! Would have been awesome to be there! Any chance this arrangement or just the E flat parts would be available for purchase? or even the E flat parts? This would be fun to play!

      You can contact Dr. Andrew Seigal at Fredonia State University. I think the is getting this published. It is a great arrangement.

    i have been playing clarinet for 3years now in school band and recently I switched my mouthpiece to a vandoren b45 and since then my clarinet has been producing a squeak whenever i play an E or or above in the clarion register, is this just me getting used to the mouthpiece and what can I do to stop it from squeaking?

    Very cool! I gave up playing my Eflat in my community concert band, b/c it goes out of tune really quickly. It's a LeBlanc Noblet. Tuning rings won't fit, and I've checked into pre-made barrels by Backun but the measurements are off and won't fit it either. Can you recommend someone who could custom-make a barrel for me?

    • @ClarinetMentors
      @ClarinetMentors  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Holly - I know that Backun has barrels for Buffet, Yamaha and Selmer, but I'm not sure about LeBlanc. If you haven't asked them, you should check. I think that Clark Fobes might have some that work as well.
