He digs; I cook: Behind the Homestead
Sharing snippets of our life and seasonal homesteading tips!
We are child-free homesteaders living on 20 acres in beautiful Wisconsin. Here’s a look at our week as spring is springing…
A NOTE:
I originally started specifying “child free” in my “day-in-the-life” videos to be transparent. I never want anyone to feel like they’re not doing enough, especially if they have young kids.
However, what I learned is that there’s a subset of homesteaders out there who often feel left out in this community. The “typical” homesteader has children, maybe even a lot of them. And as people who don’t, our life looks different. It can be hard to relate sometimes, even though we have so many other things in common.
So if you are homesteading WITHOUT kids: welcome! Turns out there’s a bunch of us!
If you are homesteading WITH kids: I think you are amazing! I’m in awe of you!
I love my life, and I love being able to share a different perspective here. Please know I am throwing absolutely zero shade at people with children. I’m always happy for anyone living the life they wanted, no matter what it looks like. 💗

Just noticed in the comment below my previous post that they use the ground leaves. I have never tried that as I don't generally remove the leaves while drying. The scapes however are excellent and definitely recommend using those in cooking.

for storage we use the legs cut from nylon stockings. Place about 6 heads and knot the stocking twice, add another 6 heads and follow the double knotting till you run out of room. the reason for the two knots between groups is that you can cut between the knots, and everything is still contained in the nylons. Works well to hang the garlic in a unheated storage area under the stairs.

In the UK it’s being known as the year of slugs and snails. Everything is very behind and my beans have the same issue…I just transplanted some small seedlings yesterday so fingers crossed. It’s a tough year but my onions are ok, garlic a disaster, potatoes are nearly finished which is good as lots of people are reporting blight very early. Parsnips are good, brassicas all eaten though by slugs. Not sure what to do now!

heads up, you can grind the leaves and use them as powder garlic leaves. It's not as strong as the cloves so it will give you a light garlic taste. No doubt, you will taste the garlic. You can also eat them while they are still green. great for soups.

That's a good question and not one I'm the best to answer.... we don't typically have to water our gardens here because it rains every week.

  • @acrazydayandelliemay

Pricing really depends on how big your garden is and how you choose to garden. Price also depends on where you live. I seen someone post that starter soil is $10 a bag where i am its $6 and organic starter soil🤷 also if you save seed that saves you also. Start up cost will always cost the most but once you start maintaining it cost very little again depending on how you choose to grow your garden. For me the property we have we only have had for 3 years the soil was awful. Every year we work on getting our soil to a better quality. This takes time and money. There are always ways to cut cost if you're willing to do the work!

Slugs just love my petunias, but thats the price i pay to keep my tomato plants. However the horn worm attacked them this year. I kept them away last year with mint next to the tomatoes, but that is soooo invasive! I tried basil this year, didn't work obviously. My best is the pickles. Ive done 4 quarts and 2 pints so far, but the heat is catching up to them too. I was watering them 2x a day but its just gettin to them i am afraid. My green pepper is about 12 inches now finally but struggling immensely. Good news tho. Looks like some of the onions will be ready to harvest in the morning. Pros and cons. Ups and downs. But i do have to say, i am VERY seriously thinking of calling it quits after this year. What i have told you is only the half of it all. We shall see

My onions all failed this year too. Considering the sun has bleached other plants bone white within a day or two, I'm suspecting whatever is going on with the sky/weather. They aren't by the bleached plants, but even my peppers and ginger are struggling. I also only have 1 sweet potato plant left. 😮 A lot of snails & iguanas here normally, but I've figured how to control them for the most part. These giant African snails are something else😂
