The Most Underappreciated DM in all of D&D
Just a rant about how much I love Brian Murphy and NADDpod. A forever DM with a deep love for D&D and a good head for rules, Murph is one of the greats.

Silvery Barbs can be a touchy subject. It's clearly not balanced on the same scale as other spells, but is it game breaking? Dice goblins go here: www.onlycrits.com/ Online Dungeon Master for Rolling Stats: onlinedungeonmaster.com/2012/05/24/advantage-and-disadvantage-in-dd-next-the-math/

    My "easier solution" is to remove it from the spell lists, & instead make it a Bard-only class feature at Level 6 (alongside or replacing Countercharm), and make it cost a use of Bardic Inspiration instead of a spell slot (though there is the alternative of having it cost a 3rd level spell slot instead of a Bardic Inspiration). Ensures that not only is it harder to access (can't get it with Magic Initiate or a 1 level dip now), but it's also more costly to use (Bardic Inspiration & level 3+ spell slots are less common and harder to restore, with other important abilities/spells requiring their expenditure) and limited to the Bard (the only class Silvery Barbs really makes sense for).

    I wanted to do a campaign much like golden sun, start with your character, seem to lose them at the end of a battle with bbg, start another, halfway through the second you get access to your old character with minor upgrades revealing how they escaped the last battle with bbg and need to level up and get a quest item before facing him with both sets of character giving you 2 rounds of play per combat.

    • @DBArtsCreators
      @DBArtsCreators Před 4 dny

      Depends on how you run encounters and dungeons. Figure out how which & many enemies you want in your session, and how many "encounters" that would translate into, then populate your session with those enemies in chunks to allow for however many short / long rest you want the party to be taking.

  • @peterrose5373
    @peterrose5373 Před 6 dny

    the analysis of how much difference disadvantage makes, doesn't take into account that you don't have to use it until you see whether the attack hits. That makes it far more useful than the numbers for "the lower of two D20 rolls" would suggest. How much more useful, as you noted, depends on how high you need to roll to hit in the first place.

  • @farrex0
    @farrex0 Před 7 dny

    Another thing to add up, is that it is straight up better and more cost effective than the metamagic Heightened spell. First up, you can use it after you know it has succeeded. So if someone throws a very important encounter ending spell such as banishment, hold person, etc. You can make sure it succeeds. All of that for the cost of a 1st leveled spell.... the metamagic costs 3 sorcery points and a 1st leveled spell is only 2 sorcery points. So it is straight up better, because you use it only after you know it failed. It is cheaper, it is easier to get, you have more uses of it. And on top of all that, it doesn't even have to be your own spell. You can throw it when the banishment the cleric threw failed. And to make it even worse, you can now give advantage to the rogue. All of that for a 1st leveled spell. And that is without taking into account its main use.

  • @farrex0
    @farrex0 Před 7 dny

    The biggest use out of silvery Barbs I have seen is to negate critical hits. Even if the enemy or player hits again, it will most likely not be a critical hit. I have seen both DMs and players alike get their dreams crushed when they celebrate a nat 20 only to hear the words "I cast silvery barbs"... It is so strong, I have seen people use counterspell, and when people need a 3rd leveled spell to negate a 1st leveled spell, you know something is wrong.

  • @farrex0
    @farrex0 Před 7 dny

    WOTC recommends far more combats per rest than people are accustomed to. They recommend 6-8 combats per day.... seems like they have never played the game they designed. Each combat can last an hour or more. Do they really expect to spend 6-8 hours each day of playtime, before we even get to the boss?

    While this definitely makes sense and could make playthroughs less volatile. Some of the best moments in D&D can come from a character tragically failing at something they should be very competent at and just having to somehow flavour it in a way that makes sense.

    • @xilj4002
      @xilj4002 Před 2 dny

      You can do what some other games do. An auto success is a "you managed", but if you gamble a roll, you might ace whatever you're doing and get some extra effect. Maybe the door knocks down an enemy. Maybe a piece breaks down and takes out a trap. Or maybe it's just really cool and dramatic. That way the players don't have to bother with things that don't matter when they don't care about them, they aren't forced to roll for trivial things and risk fumbling them, but you still have your epic fails and cool crits when it's the right time for them

    Silvery Barbs is overrated. It gets banned because it 'feels' overpowered, but it's actually balanced just fine. SB gives advantage which is about 15% and disadvantage on average, which is also 15%. So 30% change - once. Shield increases your AC by 5 and is a reaction. That's an increase of 25% to AC. So it's better than Shield? Nope! Because Shield stays around until your next turn (and reduces magic missile to 0 damage). What else is that strong? Absorb Elements. Again, you KNOW you're getting hit so that's fine. Does Silvery Barbs reduce damage by 50%? Nope, we already did the math and found it was 30% difference in hit/miss. SB is 3rd best among the 1st level reaction spells (sorry feathery fall). That's not even taking Bless (12.5% increase to saves and attacks for multiple rounds to multiple people), Healing Word (range bonus action heal makes dying nearly impossible), Find Familiar (ritual spell to get advantage on 1 attack every round for eternity?). Heck, Entangle is on par with Silvery Barbs. Is it a good spell? Yes. Top 10 for 1st level. Is it OP and need to be banned? Lol, no. Ban Bless and Shield first.

  • @alistairbolden6340
    @alistairbolden6340 Před 7 dny

    Silvery barbs is really not special at all, its only DMs that ignore Inspiration that think it is. Lucky feat is much the same, players are designed to have the ability to get at will advantage a few times a day, its not like Inspiration is an optional rule or anything. Fabricate is banned way more often by DM's and for good reason.

    • @DBArtsCreators
      @DBArtsCreators Před 4 dny

      Lucky is also a frequently banned feat because it is often too powerful, while Inspiration is treated as an optional rule purely up to DM discretion.
