  • Near death experiences are great opportunities to build characters, we should be using them for that end more often #dnd #onlycrits #dnd5e #characterdesign

Only issue is that for frontliners in 5e, they're dropping two, three, maybe more times in a single combat because the optimal healing strat is to never heal anyone who isn't down. You can't sustain a pace of 'cool NDE experiences' when it's happening every other turn. This does nothing to fix the problem that healing is garbage, restoration is a yoyo and combat is basically just a damage race. It's a GREAT idea, for the wrong game, since this works fantastically in games where dropping to 0hp is a relatively rare and character defining experience, but in 5e it just happens so often that players become jaded to it, like the barbarian *in character* is basically screaming at their ancestors "fuck off! i know this shit already, i'm going to be up and concious again in like six seconds, and probably back here listening to you bullshit about our family honour again within thirty! this happens literally three or four times a day at this point!"
