I have been binge listening to your podcast over the past few days. I have a bit of a wisdom hangover, but in a good way! I was born in 1964, so it should come as no surprise that my 2 idols were and are Carol and Julie. I began my listening with Carol and ended with Julie-it seemed like no other way to listen. Thank you for all that you have shared, through your own stories and with these women. 💚

Gloria Steinem has always been brilliant and beautiful inside and out, but she has never believed in natural ''femininity'' and ''masculinity'' and just a few years ago in an interview on CZcams she was still saying that gender is not natural we made it up,and she's so right.

I first became aware of your podcast during a recent "Action for Happiness" Zoom meeting. I mentioned that I was watching The Flying Nun as a way to counteract my anxiety based on current events (it really works!). I started with this episode and I am now hooked!! It is nice to get perspective about aging (I will be 65 in November) and hearing conversations with so many icons that we a part of my childhood. I hired Debbie Allen (forced into by my client is closer to the truth) to direct a PSA in the '90's in Houston (the town she hates), where I owned a production company. This job was a big deal for my little company. It was one of the worst, most horrific professional experiences of my life. She was rude, intolerable & talentless, unable to come up with one original creative idea of her own. When the day was done (her boob actually popped out of the tank top she wore), I found myself a corner & just cried my eyes out. I got up as I saw her approach me, thinking that she might finally say one word to me or even thank me for the directing job I gave her (she was paid, along with her assistant very, very well; first class travel, hotel paid for them both). She stuck her hand out (as did I, thinking she would shake my hand) & instead said, "I want my per diem." I forked over $150 in cash & she turned her back on me & walked off. It wasn't easy being a female producer back then just starting off. My male partners were at the bar celebrating with the client, while I was "wrapping up the crew". She was more insulting to me than those knuckleheads. She was the worst (and that's saying a lot). An experience I still feel so hurt by even all these years later. No class. No camaraderie. Ungrateful (this PSA might have been one of her first directing jobs). A real cruel streak runs through this woman.

I adore and admire Fran Lebowitz enormously, but it’s inevitably true that she tells the same stories over and over again with the same jokes and punchlines. I personally love hearing the stories many times, but the problem for an interviewer who does “their homework” on Fran is that if you actually read all of her work and see all of her interviews, very often, as soon as she starts a story, you automatically know where it’s going. Case in point, Fran’s porn book being names after her headmaster: Julia tried to sound shocked and amused but the truth is she already knew the story… I’m a huge FL fan, I too have seen and read all that’s available, and every story told here, I had already heard before. 🤣🤷🏻‍♂️

2 part post: 1. Trying to connect with Ruth and 2. Our mutual friend Marty Newman from NU, thought I should connect with you. Please pass on to Ruth as my intention is just to share a magical memory: On October 25, 2004 I emailed my brother, Chip Fleischer, if I should gift myself a belated 45th birthday present of attending a dinner in Kansas City, Missouri celebrating the 60th anniversary of Gourmet Magazine. I wrote to him, “should I bite?” He replied “If I were you and I had the money to spare, I would.” Flying solo, I entered the cocktail hour and my friend Jane Zieha asked if I were sitting with anyone and when I replied no, she seated me at her table next to you. When I introduced myself, you asked if I happened to be related to Chip Fleischer and when I replied yes, you shared his title Hero was your favorite book of the moment to give. I cannot even describe what that moment was like for me. I recently recounted this story when the host of our next Book Club announced we are to read “Comfort Me with Apples.” I went to my copy of “The Gourmet Cookbooks” and love seeing your signature with both our names on the same page with a copy of the email I sent to Chip, the newsletter from Rainy Day Books and a copy of the Kansas City Star about the new cookbook. I am now listening to “Save Me the Plums” after finishing “Comfort Me with Apples.” Writing with much appreciation for such a fantastical celebration. And, on a very separate conversation, I am the domestic manufacturer of Patient Apparel I wanted to chat about the dignity and comfort my products give patients during their health journeys. Given your breast cancer journey, Marty thought my product might be intriguing to you. Www@Twirlconnect.com Pam@twirlconnect.com
