- In this edition of Wiser Than Me, Julia gets schooled by 72-year-old writer and legendary New York City resident Fran Lebowitz. This is an interview for the ages - literally. Fran gives Julia her best advice for plotting revenge, being a bad girlfriend, and avoiding modern technology at all costs. Plus, Fran shares what she learned about forgiveness from her late friend Toni Morrison. And Julia and her mom Judith reminisce about how Julia’s sense of humor got her in trouble in high school.
Fran is so unapologetically herself. Great interview.
“I am an incredible grudge holder.” I can relate.😂
Looking forward to listening to this! Absolutely loved your conversation with Jane Fonda. Then I stood in my kitchen listening to Isabel Allende and cried. You are doing a marvellous service for us all, documenting all the wisdom these incredible women have to offer. I am also loving how much you’re sharing about yourself, your heart, strength and vulnerabilities. F@#$ yeah!❤️
The interview with Isabel Allende is my favorite. She is so inspiring.
Oh my god this is a GOOD podcast. Lose yourself in it good. Julia is, as always, funny - but also insightful, thought-provoking, and a great interviewer. Too many podcasters talk over their guests, and Julia strikes the right balance of engaging conversation while still leaving space for her guests. I freaking love this lady.
Aghh how am I only now discovering she has a podcast!! An utter natural and pro.. abs perfect medium for her. One of my fav humans since forever, and this was fantastic. Depth, intelligence, insight, spontaneity (both of them). Food for thought is an understatement. She _even_ made Fran giggle a few times - no small feat! I mean . . if JLD can't make you giggle who the hell can?
I related to everything Fran Lebowitz said. What a phenomenal podcast, Julia!💕
this is one of the best interviews/convos with lebowitz ever! and I've watched all of her interviews. people ask her the same questions often but this is fresh!
Fran never fails to ground and center me. I too wish I could be her friend.
I love her!!
Julia, you are amazing and deeply reflective. Thank you, Julia. I love Manhattan, too. In my bones as a jew, I am an upper westsider b4 all the gentrification. Your memories are grand. My paternal and maternal side were from Manhattan. We always visited faithfully. Then I lived there through the fiscal crisis , the crack epidemic, after moving there etc. Yet I never ever turned my back on NYC . I wish I could still live there. There was a time when people could, and it was a wonderful mix. The amazing stories that would present themselves. I so wish it has not become so hogenized. Yet, the stories emerge. Thank you .
Love these two! Great interview.
That Mom bit at the end is lovely, Julia!!❤
Loved this so much!
Great interview. Most interviewers don’t bother to research a person and ask the same questions over and over again. Loved hearing Fran explain herself beyond the usual sloppy questions. People should always ask her something new and be surprised. Thank you “Elaine Benice”. You should have asked her what she thought of Elaine too lol.
I was listening to you on Conan and heard about your new podcast!!! As a 50 year old women I love this idea for a podcast! Fantastic podcast and what an amazing woman!❤❤❤ Please share all your wisdom and your guests wisdom!
❤you Julia great podcasts keep them coming
I enjoyed this interview because you didn’t ask the same questions everyone else does! It was more personal & spontaneous. Nice little followup chat with yr mum too. Love fm Australia xx
Just discovered this. Oh My! Can't wait to share with my friends.
From a 58 year old woman, THANK YOU! 1) I do know everything that I will ever know. 2) I do still look OK...not great but I'm trying to stave off decrepitude through exercise and diet.
This interview was so different from Darlene Love but you handled both so extremely well. Fran is a thought provoking intelligent woman and interesting to listen to.
I am just loving this podcast!
My answering machine said. . ."this Susan's houseboy, leave number, she call you chop chop".
( in my voice) My parents thought a man was living with me!
Julia interview your mother 😊
1) I love you both. 2) I won "most wittiest" in 6th grade. My humour saved me from bullying as I was also tall (6'1") and autistic (not known then, but when my daughter was diagnosed, I saw it when we went through her process).
Fran: your expulsion was by small-minded, pathetic, frightened people.
"A piece of paper in the mail."
Where's the video feed? What are you in your PJ's? Get with the program Julia.
Podcasts are audio. There is no need for video. Just put on your headphones, close your eyes, and rest.
It would be great to see your Zoom calls! 👏
Hi Ms. Louis-Dreyfus,
You’ve brought much enjoyment to me through your work over the years!
I have a complaint regarding your Wiser Than Me podcast with Fran Lebowitz in April. You asked Ms. Lebowitz if she liked being at an all-girls school when she was younger. She responded, “I wouldn’t mind if the whole world was all girls.” Your response was, “It’d be a better world.”
Lebowitz’s is a lesbian, a jew, born middle/working class and is not conventionally attractive. Those are real things that people get oppressed for.
You were born into wealth and considered conventionally attractive.
Women are moving into positions of power throughout the world and proving quite capable of doing the evil that men have done for millennia. Women have character assets that most men lack but the opposite is true, as well. After women have been part of the ruling class for a while we may find that both sexes wind up doing the same evil through different means.
Most men are also powerless in society and exposed to the threat of violence from men each day. The violence projected at women may be just a different kind.
As well as being oppressed, women have been a party to oppression since Day One.
Thanks to your given talents and hard work, you’re are high-profile commentator now. If you want to have credibility with me, and maybe millions of other men and women, you may want to question your elitism.
Other than that, no complaints!
Fran, we love you, but I am 73 yrs. old, and I have no gray hair. My parents got a touch of gray when about 85.
And many, like Phil Donahue or Leslie Nielsen turned gray early. What's your point?
Iam walking around in Gta 4 and listen to real new yorkers. Absolutely cool. Back in the days i used to watch the sunrise over Manhattan via webcam. This City is just the place to be!❤
I adore and admire Fran Lebowitz enormously, but it’s inevitably true that she tells the same stories over and over again with the same jokes and punchlines. I personally love hearing the stories many times, but the problem for an interviewer who does “their homework” on Fran is that if you actually read all of her work and see all of her interviews, very often, as soon as she starts a story, you automatically know where it’s going. Case in point, Fran’s porn book being names after her headmaster: Julia tried to sound shocked and amused but the truth is she already knew the story…
I’m a huge FL fan, I too have seen and read all that’s available, and every story told here, I had already heard before. 🤣🤷🏻♂️
Well...I'm in
Born in 1962.
Grew up with this feminist mindset. My very responsible father abhorred women like this. I didn’t understand why.
I finally get it and now and know why the movie “ Idiocracy” is actually a futuristic documentary.
We’re in deep trouble as a society and I , a woman , blame US.
It’s a bit pathetic that being the heir of a billionaire you make your audience sit through a 3-ad break… Honestly, how much richer do you want to get? 🥴
Loosen up Julia!! How can you be so humorless?
A shameful display of sexism and misandry by Julia at 10:55. Another clueless elitist?
go away
