    Hi, The reason for these (`sponges`) they where soaked in water, Was so they "manufacture" could keep welding without warping panel from heat w/out slowing down. A really bad example is 70`s GM`s NOVA`S, CHEVELLE`S, rear quarters between inner and outer fenders at the wheel lip!

    For a small part like that it may be a bit extreme, but they make something called aircraft paint stripper in an aerosol. For something that's small I'd take it outside. Spray it down, strip it that way because there's a lot less energy involved even though you may pay a little more for the stripper.

      We always knew we want a classic muscle car (after having a ‘68 GTO when we were younger), the only apprehension was how much restoration did we want to get into. Having never done this before, it was a little intimidating making that decision. After getting into this car now we made the right choice going basically ground up. There are so many areas you can’t see when the car is all together. At the end we will know we have a solid car and if there’s any issues, it’s on us (hope not). Hopefully this answers your question. The extensions are sandwiched between the firewall and the outer cowl boxes. I'm going through the same process with my 71 Acadian which is the panels as a 69 Firebird/Camaro. Keep up the good work buddy.

      Thank you. I left the rocker extensions only screwed into the firewall for now. My thoughts are when I remove the rest of the spot welds from the rocker extensions and the cowl, it will give me enough play to open the gap a little and slide the new rocker extensions up and into place. We will see 🤞, so stay tune for that install. Thanks for the comment and for watching and good luck with your project.✌️

    Great comprehensive vid! I replaced a set of frame mounts, under the torque box, that were cut off to use the front sub frame on an early pickup. I had two other (square) front sub frames removed, and so had plenty of examples to work from. I measured, leveled, and tack welded (in place of screws) until it was within 1/16" of perfectly square. (1/8" being the factory standard on my two examples) Glad to see you take the time to do the same. Makes me feel like it wasn't just wasted time!

    Just curious, were you in the military? The haircut gives it away. lol. I was in the Marines working on Cobras and Hueys from 1996 - 2002. Now I am a Bell Tech Rep for the last 20 years working with the Marines and now the Iraqi Army in Taji Airbase north of Baghdad. Either way, love your videos and keep up the GREAT work!!!

Seconds I want to say now you have an idea why I try to save as much metal as I possibly can from the original metal on the car . third I want to also thank you for saying many times that I am a good metal guy this skill comes with lots of experience and f@#$#@ ups and the way I see you work on this bird one day you will be faster and better than me building these birds just keep working hard on it

    I'm trying to verify the design before building a jig for my car. I'm looking at your drawing, on the plan view at the rearmost uprights. I am not seeing how you get a 41-1/2" inner dimension, and a centered dimension of 43-3/4" at the same time with 1-1/2" tube as the other sheet indicates. If I hold the inner dimension at 41-1/2" as pictured, the outer dimension would just add 1/2 of the tube diameter twice, or more simply, add 1x the tube diameter... giving me 43" even. Where did the extra 3/4" come from? I am tempted to hold the 43-3/4" though, since almost all the other dimensions are on center and assume the 41-1/2" was miscalculated? Maybe I'm missing something?

    • @blackcloud77
      @blackcloud77 Před 2 měsíci

      I think I figured it out, is 41-3/4" not an inner dimension for the riser, but between the angle caps instead? I read another comment along those lines and thought that might be it.

    • @JK_Nex_Garage
      @JK_Nex_Garage Před 2 měsíci

      Yes. Sorry for any confusion. The video #3 at the 1:38 mark kind of explains it. The 41-1/2” is the inside of the frame rails angles. That allow some play of about a 1/4” between the frame rail and the angle. Please reach back out if you need more help. Sorry for the confusion. ✌️

      @@JK_Nex_Garage No problem at all, I'm just glad to have another shot at a solid set of plans, since I could never figure out why the factory dimensions didn't quite work! I appreciate that you took the time to do this! I have been reading plan sets for decades, so the assumption of an inner dimension was on me...anyone else might not have been tripped up by that. :)

    Like your attention to detail. I am about to get back on my 68 Camaro after a few years on hold and I bought a lot of panels just in case I need them and availability is gone. I had to build myself a small metal barn to move forward. Hope to follow yours as I work. This cowl and dash are the last items I bought not knowing.

      Thank you. Glade you’re getting back on your ‘68. You can always sell these panels if you don’t use them. I would rather have the panels and not use them, than need them and they aren’t available. Thank you for watching and keep us updated on your project.✌️

    Proof that reproduction panels aren’t always right and you should assume nothing. Making good progress and this will be better then new when done.

    Slow and steady wins the race! I put a new firewall into my 70 Camaro and a couple things really helped get it to fit for me. I made a wooden piece that matched the tunnel shape out of two pieces of 3/4" plywood that I could jack up with a floor jack. Also welded to tab hooks onto the tunnel of the firewall and used two cables with ratchet straps hooked to the axle and pulled the firewall back to the floor lip, then jacked up the plywood to make it fit tight. This allowed me to weld in all by myself nice and tight. I started at the tunnel and worked outward, then worked the front and top, welding as I went.
