7mm Showdown | Part 7 | 280 AI Load Development | Results & Rifle Specs | Little Crow Gunworks
In this video we take a look at the 280 AI we're using for testing in this video series. We review the rifle specs and then take a look at how it shot with factory ammo and our initial sweet spot loads.
There is one curveball, that we didn't expect to encounter. but it will all be good in the end.
We also talk about a few misconceptions that we often hear repeated in the rifle/handloading world.
Thanks for coming along.

    Great series. I was kind of hoping you’d throat the 7 Rem mag to unlock more of its potential. I just started with the cartridge 2 months ago. So I had no place to start other than published data. I landed on Retumbo pushing 180 Berger Hybrids at 3045. I never expected that kind of velocity especially with 1/2” groups. Haven’t stretched out past 1079 yards. Trying for a mile. Really tough to find a place to get it done where I live. I’ll be looking more into Gordon’s software as well. Again thanks for what you’re doing here.

    You were a little off base on the Bell curve. If 66% of the time you shoot within half an inch then 34% of the time you shoot bigger than half an inch. Not 17 and 17. Less than a half an inches included in the half inch. But we get your drift. One sigma should be 66 two sigma is 95, etc. 43:50

    As always, Tim, the only thing I regret about my time spent watching your videos is that I'm doing it at work, between customers - With no access to my reloading kit. I'd not even eyeballed N150 before this, and now I want to pull up my 280AI load data and run 150 through Gordon's to see what it says for what I've put in it. Thank you for this, and I look forward to the rest!

    @littlecrowgunworks Thanks Tim for the next installment. As a 280 AI owner, i was very much looking forward to this one. I was hoping youd find a N555 load that shot well as ive just picked up a pound of that after running through GRT and liking the numbers. Maybe my 1:9 proof barrel will shoot the 150 gr CX well. I plan to set the jump at .050 as Hornady recommends. Hope i can get a load that shoots from my barrel, but i have 4350 as well and i know 4831 SSC shoots the 162 gr ELDX super small. I was hoping for more velocity than 4831, but dropping to the 150 gr CX should give me better blood trails. Thanks again and cant wait to see all the guns stretched out!

    Tim, not sure your order of shooting but I have personally found, as have others, that the CX bullet likes to be shot from a clean barrel. I did an 8 shot string in .3 increments and the group size was about 1.25”. Picked a load to try and shot it after my 143 ELD-X factory from my 6.5 PRC and the group size was 1.75”. Next time out w the same CX load but again a clean barrel and it went into .9”. Found the same thing shooting copper out of my 6.5 CM when it was in the middle of other lead based bullets. Once clean, it shot great. As the first load out of the clean barrel. Another excellent class.

    Ive been enjoying your videos. How do mitigate bipod hop the way you do? Ive got a 308 with an M24 in a T4A and get bipod hop if I dont load the bipod into a 2x4 screwed into my shooting platform. Ive got a Harris 6-9. I use it at its shortest length. Should I lengthen the legs?

    • @LittleCrowGunworks
      @LittleCrowGunworks Před 3 dny

      Thank you for the support. The T4A is setup perfectly to be consistent at long range. These MBM Muzzle Brakes are designed to push the muzzle down WHILE it's reducing recoil. Notice the angle of the ports? As the gas exits the ports, it pushes down at a diagonal, which is pushing the barrel down, AND away from the shooter. I don't think the leg length would help much. A heavier bipod or adding a Picatinny rail and shooting off something heavier, like our Thorofare tripod, in effect adds 4 lbs to the rifle stock. Because it's essentially a 4 lb bipod that you can also glass with. That will REALLY tame it down. We don't promote bipods for hunting. Because they have one use and have a severely limited useful range. Where as, a Tripod has many uses and allows you to have a stable shooting position from prone, all the way to standing and anywhere in between. Plus it adds 4 lbs to the rifle to mitigate recoil.

    I am happy with the handloads I've re-verified in my 280AI with a 24" Bartlein 5 groove #3 contour - 139 Barnes LRX over Superformance at 3300fps. I'll use it out to 400 or 450 yards. Still haven't made time to do any further testing in my Brux barreled 280AI. I plan to take a 2x fired Norma case, neck it down to accept a .277 bullet, seat a 150 ABLR to make a dummy round and send it off to JGS for a reamer - 270 O'Connor. I spoke with a builder who is very familiar with it and he stated to me he averages 3200fps with a 130 mono but doesn't like to run cartridges hard and gets long brass life. I tend to run them as hot as they will go accurately and just buy more brass. Maybe I should rethink what I'm thinking.

      @@ronlowney4700 I necked down a 7PRC to 270 cal. Remember? the 270-7PRC. It's a rockstar cartridge.

      @@ronlowney4700 And now I'm considering a 2x fired 280AI brass, necked sized only, down to 0.277, making a dummy round with a 150 grain bullet, and getting a reamer made with it. The 270 O'Connor. From my research it's not a 270 Ackley because, as I understand it, Ackley used a 270 win case and modified the shoulder. The 280AI necked down to 0.277 has more case, shorter neck, thus, ever so slightly more case capacity.

    This series made me a subscriber. The way you’re explaining all this is just great.

    This video was awesome! Lots of stuff I already live by BUT so much of the detail explained was great. I’m by no means an experienced long range shooter but I’m a very experienced hunter that has started looking to extend my reach to 500. 600 would be max I would ever take also but I’m not there yet. Also the blank look at certain points is perfect haha.

    Ya mag length does suck on the tikkas but still love them lol. Always been able to make them shoot with multiple different loads. Very hard to beat for a cheaper factory option.

    Thanks for this greatly needed information. You've saved a lot of time and money for many of us by publishing this. One question: I'm a 270 win reloader. I realize from a comment you made that you aren't loading 270 win. If you were, would you add any additional powders to your short list?

      Thank you for the positive feedback. No, I wouldn't. For 24" Barrels 130gr Class Bullets = N555 or N160 150gr Class Bullets = N555 or N160 170gr Class Bullets = N555 or N160 or N560 if you want to lean on it.

    Congradulations on bringing target movement into long range hunting, as an ex sniper that has fired thousands of 300 win mag rounds I will never shoot at a moving big game animal period. I currently shoot a 28 Nosler and personally believe its the best big game cartridge up to brown bear with the Nosler 175gr ABLR. The comments of a fast cartridge being a barrel burner is so irrelevant to a hunting rifle that you only verify the zero before each hunt lets me separate the BS commenters from true knowledgeable shooters. Great presentation and I appreciate the cost and effort to bring truth to the shooting public, so thank you.

    Will this work with the other chair that BOG make to convert it over to a death grip

      I assume you are talking about the "Chairpod" product that they have? It appears to have the same swing arm, it's just painted a different color. I would guess that our kit for the 360 Chair would work just fine.

    X-Caliber carbon fiber prefit or proof prefit carbon fiber? Which is better?

    • @LittleCrowGunworks
      @LittleCrowGunworks Před 8 dny

      Well, it's relative. I think they both have their pluses and minuses. The Proofs are more money, wrapped carbon fiber, cut rifled barrels and smaller profile/lighter. The X-Calibers are less money, sleeved carbon, button rifled and larger profiles/stiffer/heavier. You have to pick what's right for you. They're both going to shoot good.

    So what's the deal with n565. I bought a pound. Thinking it was 165 then when I got home. Realized it's not what I wanted. Now I can't find much about it. Can anyone help maybe ??

    • @LittleCrowGunworks
      @LittleCrowGunworks Před 8 dny

      N565 is slower burning than N165. Both are great powders. There is pretty extensive load data on the VV website. If they don't have the cartridge you want to load for, use Gordons. Or take the data on the VV website and find a similar size cartridge and bullet weight to what you have and scale the charge accordingly by percentage, charge weight to water capacity.

      @@LittleCrowGunworks ok well I do not have Gordon's. But I will see what vv has to say about the 7mm rem mag. Hope it will work.
