  • In this video we show you the "Long Range Proficiency Test" by Thomas Haugland (THLR.NO on CZcams).
If you're not familiar with this test, it is an excellent way to test your skills at making an accurate, timely, cold bore shot at long range in a hunting scenario.
This is the ultimate reality check as far as I'm concerned. You can either do it or you can't. You're going to miss sometimes, it's inevitable. The goal is to miss less and get it done in under a minute.
Go try it out, see where you're at!

It's harder than it looks. I'm often successful, but, I try to add a level of difficulty each time. Make it farther, new gun, worse ballistics, etc.
If you keep everything the same, you will be successful. Then the only variable will be the conditions.
      Good Luck,
      Cheers

When getting ready for a big game hunt, I shoot off of a shooting stick at 1 gallon milk jugs set at 100-500 yards. This most closely resembles field conditions for me. ... 1 round per jug. When I start missing, I then know what my yardage limit is.

Thanks for watching! I can't think of a better way to see where you're at on each range trip.

Thomas is awesome. Very knowledgeable, practical, funny and an excellent teacher.
That's right! It's probably the best test I have seen to date for the purpose. You know, I've made first round impacts more times than I've missed. But, it's a perishable skill. You HAVE TO keep up on it.
      Thanks for watching!

If we could all have that range. But I also agree with below. Most people should be 300 yards and in. And I would say, for an average shooter like myself, I should start at 100 and see if I can work my way to 300. I have .308s and a 7 PRC.

Exactly, this test doesn't lie. You don't get a warm up and you don't get to "walk it in". You either hit it or you don't.

I think if more did this test they would limit themselves to 300 ish yards on game .

Agreed, there is way too much unwarranted confidence in long range hunting.
      Thanks for watching.
