Scything During a Super El-Nino Winter
Usually I try to stay in shape, in winter, for the upcoming spring scythe season, by shoveling snow and cross-country skiing. This year, however, I can just keep scything! Here I'm mowing areas of old unmowed grass (mostly brome). I am using a 70cm Gartensense scythe blade on a 170cm Fux adjustable wooden snath, available at www.onescytherevolution.com/quick-order.html

Harvesting Reed Canary Grass for Straw
zhlédnutí 718Před 5 měsíci
Reed Canary Grass can be harvested with a scythe, in the fall and winter for use as straw bedding. I used to use it in my goose barn. Now I am trying it out in my chicken coop. My Icelandic chickens and Welsh Harlequin ducks are enjoying it. I mowing with a 50cm fux light bush blade and No.4 Fux snath, available at scythe-revolution.com/products/light-bush-blade-scythe-outfits

Working with my Fux Gartensense scythe blade and adjustable wooden snath. Available at scythe-revolution.com/products/150cm-snath-with-60cm-gardensense-blade-scythe-outfit This area was planted in squash last year. Once the squash plants spread out, I can't mow the aisles anymore until after the harvest, so a lot of grass and weeds come up, in and along the windrows. It takes two cuttings the n...
Stopped by a Red-winged Blackbird
zhlédnutí 687Před rokem
I was trying to cut down the big thistles in this corner of the field, before they went to seed. A pair of red-winged blackbirds became very upset about it. I had scythed within 3 feet of the nest, when I spotted it with 3 eggs inside it. I took a detour and scythed down some of the biggest thistles that I could get to without getting near the nest. I've learned the hard way, that if I disturb ...

Scything Thistles and Reed Canary Grass away from Electric-Netting Poultry Fence
zhlédnutí 1,2KPřed rokem
I'm doing some delicate scything around an electric poultry net fencing, with a 50cm light bush blade. The stems of the thistles were getting to be 1/2 inch in diameter, so I preferred to use the heftier bush blade. The thistles and reed canary grass were getting so high, was starting to not be able to see my chickens! The tall vegetation actually helped keep my chickens cool during the heatwav...
Using a general-purpose scythe on a farm
zhlédnutí 1,4KPřed rokem
What is a general-purpose grass blade? It is a medium-weight grass blade usually 60-70cm long. Here is a demonstration of the use of the "Gartensense" (Garden scythe) blade in a farm situation. First I am mowing an overgrown open area of lawn grass, and then large thistles (just before flowering). The shortness of the general-purpose grass blade is also good for accurate trimming strokes. Here ...
Scything an area of mixed new grass and matted dead grass
zhlédnutí 2KPřed rokem
I had skipped mowing this area last season in order to not disturb nesting grassland birds. Whenever I would get to an section where the dead grass was more upright, and would interfere with a full scythe stroke, I would switch and take take several short ones, working with the lay of the dead grass. In sections where the dead grass is flattened to the ground, I just let the blade slide over it...
Mowing with a 70cm "Gartensense" Scythe Blade
zhlédnutí 1,6KPřed rokem
onescytherevolution.com/quick-order.html The Schroeckenfux "Gartensense" (garden scythe) scythe blades are especially good this year, in my opinion. Good form and good edge. Extra sharp right out of the package. It's a great general-purpose blade for grass and young weeds. Good for lawns and hayfields, but also dexterous trimming around garden beds, trees, and bushes. In this video I trim the g...

Great work. I’m trying hay this year
Glad to see you still at it after all these years! I feel like an exchange of ideas with Amish would be interesting...
I watched your videos when first uploaded. But the person who is gonna let me make hey on their land ended up moving away. Now somebody else is considering this and i'm wondering if you've made any updates to your method...thanks a TON 😊
Nice jig idea
The edge is probably work hardened as a result of the peening. Honing will not work harden the metal, whether it is iron or steel.
what dose this do?
Great video, thank you!
Do you find that this ensures perfect year round mulch cover? Do you need to double up the windrow as shown in the video or would one pass be sufficient?
This morning was my first cut for the season. I got my kit from you the other year and use it to make hay for my garden beds. The worst part is waiting for the grass to grow so I can break out the scythe.
I think it is very unsafe way. There is much safer and faster way to sharpen it.
Get it OG!!!!! Props!!! That scythe blade sounds sharp and ready to do more work!!! Cheers
"Gartensense" ... wieso muß da ein englischer Titel dran, wenn's doch ein deutsch benanntes Gerät ist? Und wieso nicht einfach nur "Sense"?
Because I sell it in the USA as a Gartensense Scythe Outfit scythe-revolution.com/products/150cm-snath-with-60cm-gardensense-blade-scythe-outfit
I wish I could find one of these that functions.
One man one acre one day That was our ambition.
Great! I have a have a so called "Forst Sense". It can easely cut small bushes and small trees.
I've always wanted to use a scythe like this, but they're not common in Brazil, and they're very expensive.
Must be the extremely invasive Canada thistle…
nice
This really makes me want to go peen. How did the potatoes work there?
is there any kind of cover for the hay in winter? i live in the pacific northwest and it seems like with our constant drizzle, it would be soaked through if not covered in some way.
Superb!
What blade? Looks like Falci Orso 154, right ?
What do you mean by the name Orso? It is a Falci 154. One of my absolute favorite blade. But when I reordered some more, Falci sent me blades that looked similar, but weighed a 100g more. They said that they weren't going to make the light ones any more.
Yes, I meant Falci 154 (Bear). I buy this one two weeks ago. 70cm, weight is 664gramms. @@BotanAnderson

1:43 poor mice running for their lives...lol Picked up the scythe yesterday to clean up some winter left overs, but it looks like scythe season starts early this year....
Good catch. I had to go back and watch it three times to find that. Lol
You can tell your well practiced 😂
I was taught to use a scythe when I was a kid in the 1960's. It did not have the cradle on it though We had a mix of tall oats with rye grass which is shorter. Cut it all in a long smooth stroke and lay it down at the end of the stroke so it can be picked up easy with a pitchfork. Scythe blade needs to be sharpened often.
I can’t wait to try this. The yield looks less than potatoes planted deeper in soil, but the labor for the whole operation seems a lot easier. If your back can’t take much digging, fewer potatoes is still much better than no potatoes & a field empty of food. I like how the windrow blends right into its surroundings too. Thanks for sharing this method.

Thank you for the relaxing video.
Where can I find one.
Is that a “bush blade” - if so did you peen it extra thin to be able to mow that soft grass? I’m thinking of doing this as I need a really short blade for my even narrower garden paths. Any advice so welcome, thanks 😊
Corn Butter. wall
Nice sharp blade there...no problems. That's the same blade length as mine. It's due for an outing in my back yard..I think it feels very lonely in my garage at the moment. lol
What do you do with it after it’s mowed?
I've tried all this and still can't get an edge on my scythe. Sharpening/honing isn't clicking.
What breed of ducks do you have?
Welsh Harlequins
So happy to know this!
I'm from Russia and too far. I'm learning to scythe by myself and your new formation/ lesson very useful to me. Perfect connection, sound, camera and all impression. Great job. You are one of the best. You have huge experience behind and love what you do.
Love the cat! (And the haystack too)
Just beautiful. I bought a scythe recently from Scythes Australia, I wish I had bought one twenty years ago.
This reminds me that I need to peen my blade again. My blade has lost most of that thin edge from honing through the summer. 😁👍
Peace and Quiet, can even hear the little birds singing their hearts out in the trees.
Thank you Mr. Green Reaper
Well, it's been a year since my last contribution. Has the scythe revolution quietened down somewhat, not your's, but the general popularity of it? One of the best versions of a scythe ever created, is the European blade with a straight snath, and easy to use if one is in an upright stance as you are. I found it easy on the back. My son uses mine on occasions. I taught him how to peen it...not a bad job on his part, but I end up doing more to it when he returns it. I use the smaller blade for my backyard.
What's the weather like over there?
