Using a general-purpose scythe on a farm

What is a general-purpose grass blade? It is a medium-weight grass blade usually 60-70cm long. Here is a demonstration of the use of the "Gartensense" (Garden scythe) blade in a farm situation. First I am mowing an overgrown open area of lawn grass, and then large thistles (just before flowering). The shortness of the general-purpose grass blade is also good for accurate trimming strokes. Here I am trimming the weeds from around hay bales, and along a woven wire fence. Notice how I trim the narrow space in between the round bales and the 8 ft high deer fence. Shorter, heftier blades, such as ditch and light bush blades(40-60cm) are best for dense patches of larger diameter stems of mature weeds and reed-type grasses. Long, light-weight grass blades (haying blades), 70-90cm are good for large open areas of lawn and hayfields in prime condition. My 2nd cut this year was 5-1/2 foot wild lettuce, some of which you have there. Really pushed the envelope on the blade, but it was blunt and dull. Held strong.

hey if you need a sickle to handle weeding in tough to get your scythe into like around the gardens, I found the zenport k208p to be a game changer.
