Great update. You can tell that a lot of thought has gone into this overhaul. Thanks Tim!
@@timrizzuto459: A lot of thoughts from a lot of different people, yourself included. 🙂👍
Fantastic work! And thanks for the Jim Kirk cameo! LLAP, Kidd and crew! 🖖

3:44 so does water go inside that section right there, or the pipes that we see? Also, are the looking at the hull itself right there or no?
@@blitzwolfe7875: They're fuel tanks. BUT, ... they would pump in seawater atop the thick Bunker C fuel oil to maintain ballast. So, both would have been in there at various times. And, yes, those tanks' outer skin is the actual skin of the ship.
@@usskiddveteransmuseum7568 thats cool. BUT... does the water or fuel stay in the pipes, and what liquid "rests" against her hull?
@@blitzwolfe7875: Both. Those pipes are used to drain and/or fill the tanks, depending on the pipe. The ones that look like radiator coils are used to heat the thick Bunker C to a more liquefied, fluid state.
@@usskiddveteransmuseum7568 gotcha (freakin' cool)
Nice nice nice! I'm loving it guys! Keep it up!
So many cool things happening! Much love from Philadelphia and a BBNJ museum tour guide!
@KPen3750 : Thanks! Congratulations on NJ's recent drydocking. Time to put her back together for touring! 😬🙄😅
Man I can’t wait to see her all redone and in her new paint! I saw it many times docked at the museum in my trucking travels but never got the chance to stop.
@joshjosh6526 : Have to make the time. The dazzle is only going to be around for about 5 years before we rotate to her '43 camouflage.
@@usskiddveteransmuseum7568 oh its happening for sure!
Music is horrible.....something more patriotic perhaps? Otherwise, great video
Sorry you didn't like the music.
Dam be nice. Be happy there giving you this video.
Wow how much was this toe?
349 miles, I believe. It shows total distance at the end of the video. 🙂
Been to that shipyard, just about a year ago, when the C/P Arctic Fjord was about to go in the water, that was cool to see the move down the channel~ they had to dredge it to get the Fjoud out, but even then they had a barge under the stern, and airbags at the bow, that's a tough place. My Uncle served on a sip like this, after WWII some time.
Beautiful footage! I wore your "world tour" t-shirt to my second drydocking tour under the New Jersey and Ryan got a kick out of it. I really enjoy Parks' sense of humor 😁
I've been able to have the opportunity twice to enjoy visiting this wonderful naval museum and I will never forget either visit especially because my friend that was with me both times has since passed away !!! What a memorable amazing experience it was to be immersed in such a way to learn what those sailors did for our country ! Thank you all for your service to our country and for restoring this amazing ship
Thank you! Glad you had such a great experience and that you got to share it with your friend. Hope you can come again after we get home and see some of the work that we're doing.
IF I had MY way, I would Guard the SHIP 24/7 365 until she returned to her BERTH !
PLEASE understand, I am just deeply attached to OUR GIRL ! I feel lost with her GONE. thats all.
🏴☠🏴☠
Amazing to see the old girl underway. So happy she is going to get some TLC so many other generations will get to learn and enjoy her.
Thanks for the update. Glad see is getting all this attention, looks like a lot of topside/exterior corrosion.
On the fantail, yes. Originally decked there with galvanized steel. We'll be redecking that entire exterior area aft of Mt 55.
@AllAmericanTravels love the kid
we love you kid
She loves her fans!!! 😃❤️❤️❤️
It's impressive, what you are doing. It took us fifteen years to find all that equipment and weld it in place, and you cut everything off in three weeks! 20mm guns; two came from the Buffalo Park, four from Holldand. Searchlignts; One came from USS TOLAMN DM-28 at Port Hueneme, and one was found by WWII KIDD Sonarman Fred Higgs at an estate sale, and he donated it. MK-51 directors came from Crane Indiana, legend is that they came off the MISSOURI. One the quad forties came from Pearl Harbor, the other from Crane. The Navy put the twins on in Philly, so we never knew where they came from. The torpedo tubes came from CAPERTON (DD-650). Are you going to take those off too?
No, the tubes stay on. The CAPERTON's torpedo directors come off for restoration/preservation, though. It's like pushing the reset button back to 1982 and starting all over again. She looks bare. But the goal is that she'll be better when we hand her off to the next generation than she was when we got her from our predecessors. Same as she was better when you passed her on to Jesse Eaves than when you got her in '82. 🙂 We build upon the work previously done.
Fred Higgs is my Grandfather.
I was at the Kidd a couple years ago go and remember touring the Kidd when I was in middle school with my grandfather Fred Higgs. Tim was great and let me in the sonar room to sit where Fred sat during WWII. I’m excited to see this restoration being done, the ship needed it. Thank you all for what you are doing to keep an part of our country’s and my family’s history available to see, tour and learn from.
Love the video. Got turned onto this project while watching New Jersey dry dock and they mentioned Kidd was headed there. Looking forward to more updates.
My Grandfather Clarence Johnson drew the battle insignia. I have the original he gave my grandmother before leaving pearl
The Kidd has been on my bucket list for a long time- I’m really excited that she will be in her WWII configuration when I finally see her (hopefully next summer).
Oh, she's been in WWII configuration for years now. 🙂 We're just pushing her a little closer with these last few adjustments. There will still be a couple of anachronisms. For example, we were never able to find the proper WWII QGB systems in Sonar.
Y’all are doing a lot of work! Can’t wait to see the results, keep the updates coming!
wait wheres the first vid? dont believe i caught that.
oh wait i already watched it XD
I was just saying the other day I wish i had been able to get the search lights going when I was there. But it was way down on the property list. Glad to see the sewing room deck is going to get repaired. Tim you are doing a fine job as usual.
It takes a village, ... and time, ... and money, ... lather, rinse, repeat....
Upset that the Firing controls are being taken out
It's post-war equipment. All of the WWII era fire control equipment in IC-Plot, along with the stable element and Mk-1a fire control computer, are still in place. We're putting her back closer to the way she was in August 1945.
I see a scupper is operational. What is it doing? Is the ship running her systems on shore power, or does she have her own power supply? Thanks for the great job you are doing!
I would see if the post war fire control gear could be given to another museum ship rather than "disposing" of it. It misght not be WW2 period, but it is still probably irreplaceable.
@@dougalexander5871 : Shore power.
@tboltaq2 : We already tried that years ago on another project. That's not allowed by NAVSEA regulations. The equipment has to be scrapped.
Thanks for the update Tim. You folks are doing a great job!
Awesome video! Looking forward to seeing the restoration processes!
Greetings, DD-661 crew!
Welcome back!
It is beautiful to see such a majestic ship on the water again.
Those tugs work like a well orchestrated machine. Amazing work and excellent seamanship.
Yes, they did! 🙂
Excellent to see USS KIDD on the move. As a NEW JERSEY volunteer who may or may not have a gps screenshot showing 5 knots (only checked once), the downside to speed in this special case is that you only get there faster!😢
The beeps from the rigs are just to let ships know that there's a structure there, like a fog horn but constant.
Thanks! We suspected that was the case, but it's great to get independent confirmation. 😄
❤❤ That was a once-in-a-lifetime voyage, I wish I could have been a part of it since one of my grandfathers served on a tin can in WWII and my other in the Silent Service plus Korea,
You would think cell companies would ad repeaters to oilrigs off shore to expand coverage considering a small tower would have a long range over the ocean to the coastal areas. Packed with people on vacation on the beach or near the beach at sea. Also Oil companies could provide a taste of home via cell or internet as well as keep alternate communications for crews with long stays.
Tim actually did get that brief text exchange with his wife that is shown in the video as they passed close to an oil rig. Possibly the rigs have their own small towers with coverage over the rig's immediate vicinity???
I would love to see a series of this crew doing skits like from the office
Middle of the gulf on a Fletcher no cell service sounds incredible!
It WAS pretty peaceful. But only because of all the prep work done by our staff, TNT Salvage, Verret Shipyard, McKinney Salvage, and Budwine. Otherwise, it could've been a very stressful trip.
@usskiddveteransmuseum7568 Kudos to them. It makes me happy to see all these museum ships getting this attention.
Appreciate the shout out, Tim!
