      You're welcome! Practice targeting half steps to start. Then practice targeting whole steps. Play the note, then bend to it. Play the note, then bend to it. Play the note, then bend to it. Eventually, you won't need to pre-play the note. It takes time to develop! Just do the exercise in the video. :)

    What would you recommend for someone who has played off and on for about 15 years, but without any proper training. 100% self taught, and since I’ve been taking guitar more seriously, I’ve found that I play “wrong” and I’m having to go back, and relearn some basic things. If proper training from a guitar teacher is the answer, I’m all for it. I just don’t really know what to do at this point.

      Option 1: Getting a teacher will be by FAR the fastest path. If nothing else, get a teacher for accountability. I STILL do weekly lessons! You can do lessons with me here: go.mattwrightmusic.com/lessons Option 2: Watch all of my videos, all the way through, do the exercises and take notes. Either route you take, you need to figure out what you want to do with the guitar. If your goal is to play Petrucci solos, it's going to take years of dedication for the harder ones. If it's to play in a cover band, that won't take quite as much commitment. :-)

    John Petrucci plays a style that borders on nonmusical. He and his drummer both suffer from the more notes or beats you play per second equals better music. Yea it is impressive as an athletic precision perspective but it is IMO not very musical. People love Neil Pert but his solos bore me in about 10 seconds as does Petrucci's solos. Give me Ringo Starr and Eric Clapton over either of these guys any day. What Petrucci says in his 500 note 15 second solo Clapton says in a 15 note 15 second solo. I have played professionally for 0ver 30 years and most all of my peers look down and shake their heads at this kind of stuff. They can't play creatively so they work on playing fast. That doesn't impress me much.

    Ive played for 20 years and use two fingers on the back. I don’t feel any limitations with my picking hand holding it this way. Sweeping I sometimes hold it with just my index. With two fingers using .73 picks you can bend them slightly to get a firmer edge for triplets and heavy bits but for shredding i find it way smoother than thicker picks. Maybe it’s because I have super straight thumbs? Lol

    The vertical thirds of the finger section is so important and has fixed my problems with string noise immediately! To clarify the video, for up bends, the finger should fret the string on the portion of the finger that is closer to the ceiling. This feels vaguely unnatural as the finger is off to one side of the string which is not normally good technique for fretting notes. But this placement prevents the finger from coming ahead of the string that's being bent and getting caught under the adjacent strings being moved towards. And vice versa for down bends. Thanks so much for the video.

    Those finish cracks on the Majesty’s are a result of the nut being put on in the mill instead of being made to fit in the setup department. Sometimes they don’t sit flush or nor have a tight seal (gap) and usually gets filled with glue or finish which results in it cracking. It could also crack during the buffing process. The heat generated causing expansion and contraction from the glue or finish heating and cooling at different rates. It’s one flaw of the company. I would never own a majesty because they cause too many problems down the road. Imagine trying to put a new nut on the Majesty and paying to delaminate it and refinish it. No thank you! Good video by the way :)

    • @mattwright466
      @mattwright466 Před měsícem

      1. Yes, a complete break is a very good idea in the first phase of the healing process. 2. Watch my left hand masterclass video for tips on left hand. If the pain is getting worse, while you're also lessening work on guitar, I'd look for lifestyle factors (poor workplace ergonomics) that may be affecting your wrists. Highly recommend chiro to MANUALLY adjust wrists when first getting back on track. The guns that chiros use are OKAY. They're not a bad tool, but for the wrist specifically, manual adjustment is essential IMO. Stick in there!

  • @stronkloli3089

    tysm for the tips! leaving this here so i can come back to it later. ☆ for wrist pain 1. rest 2. ice, painkillers braces (more muscles atrophy) 3. look for any obvious technique issue 4. change posture, different positions addressing the left hand: 5. the finger, not the whole hand, should move 6. make sure ur action is set up properly 7. complete rest period ☆ strengthening methods: 1. gyroball 2. exercise band 7:51 3. see a chiropracter or message therapist, use a message gun 4. reverse stretching 11:00 5. stretching 12:30 6. all of our bodies have a unique response to wrist pain ☆ things to avoid: 1. grip strengthening tool 2. psychology of the words u use: instead of "i have x, im fighting y", say "i have wrist pain tdy"^^ 3. pankillers unless necessary, can be toxic for liver

    • @mattwright466
      @mattwright466 Před měsícem

      I'd edit to: LIMIT painkillers. They're a great tool. Just don't become dependent on them. Exercise band is the alternate to the Gyroball. Gyroball is all you really need. If you use a massage gun, only use it on the belly of the muscle, NEVER ON TENDONS.

      Yes, this channel is skewed towards metal playing. No, heightened technique does not diminish musicality. I've developed a ton since I created this video, but I am still using all of the same principles. You can see my playing here: czcams.com/video/AiSOfS_3XBk/video.html If you choose to play with a thin pick, go for it. I played with a .73 in my cover of A Change of Seasons Carpe Diem. Thinner picks give a brighter sound, but sacrifice immediacy of response. Your playing may not *generally* demand this response. The same fundamentals apply about guitar angle, height, avoiding tension and what to do with the other fingers.

    Hey! Could someone kindly clarify the neck joint construction differences (if any) between Sterling Majesty and Music Man Majesty. Music Man Majesty is clearly a neck through. It can be seen in many videos that review the production process, the neck and central part of the body is one part. But for Sterling Majest official website says that it's setneck or set-in neck design. I couldn't find any photos or videos of Sterling Majesty production process, so it's still unclear to me if these 2 guitars have really different construction...

      I don't know the technical difference but I can tell you the result is that they are exactly the same.

    Thx man. I finally picked up my 7 string Music Man to do it some justice. I played it like a glorified 6 string for so long so now i'm going to approach it like it's own instrument.
