Hackney Pubs - I wish I hadn't bothered.
I tried to see if there were any of the sort of pubs a middle aged tweed wearing man (who likes history and traditional English beer) might like in Hackney in London's East End. I wish I hadn't bothered.

Wandsworth Pubs: Britain's Oldest Continually Brewing Site

Exploring Wandsworth, in South West London, an area synonymous with Young's and their historic Ram Brewery (albeit that they left it in 2006). They did at least leave behind a few interesting historic pubs, and we find that other brewers have stepped in to pick up where they left off, on what is the longest continually brewing site in Britain. Along the way the usual mixed bag of historical ane...

Was Maida Vale really named after the Hero of Maida pub? I take a look into that, followed by a tour of the area's historic pubs. Much of today's tour follows in the footsteps of a book titled "Back to the Local" written by Maurice Gorham, with illustrations by Edward Ardizzone, originally published in 1949, which gives a wonderful snapshot of pub culture in the mid 20th Century. I've only just come across your channel, I'm loving it...I can't wait for you to do Camden. Nice to see the Bull and Gate mentioned, I played there many times in the 80s when it was a major hub for up and coming acts. At the same time there were many iconic bands emerging from there, the likes of Blur, Suede, Pulp and The Manic Strret Preachers all cut their teeth on that stage. Unfortunately my band, The Wigs, got absolutely nowhere!

I used to work in Theobalds Road in Holborn. We frequented Enterprise in Red Lion Street, that has retained much of its original tiling and mirrors. Lovely pub. Just across the road down Lambs Conduit Street is The Lamb. It was a fantastic Young's Pub. Still has its original privacy glass from Victorian times and still serves a smashing pint of ale. Finally I recommend a trip to the Rugby Tavern just around the corner. If you have time pop into The Queens Larder in Queens Square. Some beautiful London plane trees in the Square. Great pub but tiny. One of the finest areas in London for outstanding pubs. If you have covered these pubs, I apologise. The algorithm has just started recommending your films and I am enjoying working my way through them. Thanks 👍

I can remember a few years ago, searching for a CZcams Channel that covered this niche. Showcasing the atmosphere , stories and architectural details of historic pubs. At that time, a channel like that didn't exist and I was surprised by that, because I reasoned that surely I couldn't be the only one who wanted to see more coverage of these fascinating and richly historic buildings. I'm so incredibly glad that I stumbled upon Tweedy Pubs a few months ago. It is now one of my very favorite channels on the site.

Hackney is not like the old Hackney people think of when they hear the name Hackney. I’ve got loads of family in E5, E8 and E9. I grew up in north London but I know Hackney very well. It used to be a shit hole, but now it’s gentrified to fuck, which is not always a bad thing, but sometimes can be. All my family over that side luckily own their homes which are all worth a million and more. It’s still got its shit bits, like any area in London. But if you keep your self to yourself an do not look for trouble you will have a good life. One of my family members recently inherited his parents house, the house next door recently got sold for 1.3 million. These old London houses are crazy, masssssive basements which could be two massive rooms or decent sized flat. 100 foot garden, then 3 floors above it to do as you wish. If these houses are getting sold for 1.3 million now, what’s it going to be like in 20/30 years. The house that’s was inherited was bought £3500 back in day. Madddd come up.

Had a lot of good nights in the Salisbury. It appears in a Tales of the Unexpected from about 1981, with really good footage. I remember it looking a lot less ‘shiny’ and had red carpet if I remember correctly. Unfortunately I can’t seem to track down the episode for you. And again had loads of good nights in The Porcupine, pretty crazy pub on a Saturday night, there is every chance your sartorial elegance might get compromised with spilt drinks

Hello. I just found this channel, and it is great. Jeffrey Bernard Is Unwell played at the Apollo, around the corner from The Coach and Horses. I worked there at the time as an usher and saw the play hundreds of times. Tom Conti replaced Peter O'Toole and was much less everything than Peter O'Toole had been. It was later revived at the Old Vic with Peter O'Toole back in the saddle, though by then I was living in Canada and I missed it.

Timothy Taylors Landlord was amongst my favourite beers. Here in sunny Thailand a pint works out between £1.20 to £2.00 but not what anyone would call a real ale.
