Leicester Square Pubs: Is there any historic pub interest in London's tourist hotspot?

- Are there any decent historic pubs in the area around London's tourist hotspot Leicester Square? That's what I endeavour to find out in this video. As usual I pick a handful of pubs and take a look at their exteriors, interiors, histories, and the origin of their names. Along the way we ponder:
- A rather sad recent refurbishment of a pub which seems to have tripped out all the Victorian features.
- Was the Bell (now known as the Imperial) named for anatomist Sir Charles Bell?
- The "Philanthropic Society of Hairdressers of All Nations"!
- The Salisbury's surprising run of landlords who were formerly boxers.
- How do you pronounce "Chandos"? I have no idea.
- Why is the Porcupine called the Porcupine? It goes back all the way to 1394!

If you want a glimpse of the Salisbury in the early 1960s, some scenes in the Dirk Bogarde film “Victim” were filmed there.
The M&M store in Leicester Square was originally the Swiss Centre, where you could by all things Swiss, such as lederhosen, cuckoo clocks and Swiss army knives..
So many pubs, so much history, so little time.
It's now settled we're going to London this summer. Obviously won't make it to all the pubs you've (so far) included, but will definitely make it to some of my own favorites from your clips.
There's hopefully at least one really good pub in each video! (In my opinion anyway...) But yea definitely a good idea to cherry pick as, like the Imperial in this video, some of the pubs I visit turn out to be a big disappointment!
Had a drink in most of those in the 90's including witnessing a great bar fight in The Chandos - so tradition lives on! Angel & Crown opposite The Salisbury worth a mention too.
I think the Angel & Crown is now "Mr Fogg's Tavern" - an odd faux Victorian theme pub.
You can never understand why businesses rip out expensive opulent features, which would enhance their customers' experience to replace it with fittings that are cheap and nasty?
It really makes no sense to me! The bar back now just seems to be a tacky looking cabinet full of gin bottles - if it was just a question of storage space I'm sure they could have come up with a more creative solution than that.
Will be in London next weekend for the first time in 5 years, so I'm looking forward to visiting some good pubs. I've gone through all your videos and compiled a list of the ones I'd like to check out. I appreciate you putting this content together. Cheers!

The chandos is one of my favourite pubs in Central West London (probably the only one I went out of my way to go to occasionally). Also one of the only pubs I knew in Central London with a dart board, at least about ten years ago.
The dart board is still there! It shows briefly in the video around 15:25. Somebody had written "replace me" in chalk and it did look like there was a bit of damage to the felt but I assume it would still just about work...?
Dear Tweedy - I think that Chandos is pronounced like boss rather than like post. See also Robert Adam's magnificent Chandos House in Marylebone, Handel's Chandos Anthems and the spectacular baroque church at Great Witley, Worcestershire. PS: I absolutely love all of your pub and walking vlogs.

When at Chandos, it must have been so tempting to walk the 50 odd metres to The Harp.
It was! Under normal circumstances I would probably have chosen the Harp over the Chandos, but I have covered the Harp before in another (quite short!) video on Covent Garden: czcams.com/video/5nTHOa5CGRI/video.html
Had a lot of good nights in the Salisbury. It appears in a Tales of the Unexpected from about 1981, with really good footage. I remember it looking a lot less ‘shiny’ and had red carpet if I remember correctly. Unfortunately I can’t seem to track down the episode for you. And again had loads of good nights in The Porcupine, pretty crazy pub on a Saturday night, there is every chance your sartorial elegance might get compromised with spilt drinks
When you mentioned the Greene King, I thought of the Grenadier pub in Belgravia. It used to belong to the Greene King Brewery.
I knew it as a Fuller's pub, I think...? According to whatpub.com it's apparently now operated by "Ineos 123 Ltd"...?!
Me and my buddies always used to meet in the round table every Friday night circa mid-80's and I've no idea why but we liked it in there and still go back now and again when we are in the smoke.
It was my first time there (but I went twice in one day!) and I agree I couldn't really put my finger on why but I liked it.
@@TweedyPubs We were all Sheffielders living in different parts of London so we met there because it was next door to the tube station and we'd have a couple of pints in there before usually heading to soho or just up the road to the lamb and flag. Good times.
Thank heavens for The Salisbury. It did look ok (ish). The area is too touristy and best avoided. But if desperate at least I now know where to go. Thank you Tweedy. 👏👏👍😀🍺
I agree - this video was very much on a "any port in a storm" principle, but I do think the Salisbury is worth poking your nose in at.
I've have actually been doing some drinking in those pubs back in the summer of 2014.
I'll try these out as a change from the Bear & Staff on Bear Street (Another Nicholsons pub with some history from 1714) which is my usual haunt. Thanks Tweedy.
I slightly wish now I had included the Bear & Staff as I noticed Bear Street there even on the maps from the 1700s, which suggests it probably has a long history as you say.

I just watched your latest video of pubs around Leicester Square. Man it brought back a lot of memories. Back in the late 1980s and 1990s I travelled to London at least once a year for a week to see theatre concerts and opera. I spent a lot of time at the Salisbury and the Chandos. Salisbury, was always one of my favourite pubs in London. Just so beautiful. All the etched glass. It was amazing. I’d go there before an opera at the Colosseum and have a couple of pints and dinner. And then afterwards I stop by the Chandos. I always found the Chando’s kind of cozy. It was nice to relive it even for just a few minutes.

Thanks for this - my grandparents on my Mom's side met at the Round Table before they eventually (and to my grandmother's mind, regrettably) moved to Canada . I feel like it needs a blue plaque for that!
That's a delightful bit of family history! I think that's one of the magical thing about pubs - if an important family event happens in a private home, then several generations on it's quite likely to be owned by complete strangers and you have no real chance of visiting to relive that moment... whereas in a public house it survives (hopefully) as a lingering monument which you can go to whenever you want.

@@w.g.hunter1300 Yes I noticed the cheeky kids, they were quite sweet, but it made me a bit sad the way even very young children today seem to be so fascinated by anything with a screen on it rather than actually taking an interest in their real surroundings. Although it's probably a bit much to expect kids to revel in late Victorian pub interiors!
The Salisbury looks wonderful, particularly the etched glass and dividers.

@@TweedyPubs You chose…wisely. I drank there a few times when I was 19 and 20. Even then (before I understood what makes a truly good pub) I was underwhelmed. It did make for a serviceable spot to meet friends before setting off towards better options. These days when I find myself in Leicester Square I like to…keep waking, at a quickening pace. Thanks again for braving the land of Burger King and M&M World to explore the local pubs.

Another great video, always a highlight when you upload. Your videos are a great reminder of just how many pubs I’ve actually been to in the Covent Garden/Soho/Strand etc area.
I spotted in one of your pubs today they offer 3x 1/3 pints for £5 to sample. I like that idea.

Thanks David! Yes I really don't know what they were thinking there - the irony is those two photos I included from Google Maps were posted by the pub's management back in 2021. So clearly at some point they recognised those Victorian (esque?) features as a selling point... And within two years had ripped them out.
I found this one surprisingly uplifting! I would have imagined all the pubs in that tourist hellhole to be horrendous, but the Salisbury and the Round Table looked genuinely appealing. The Chandos seemed to be OK too and I loved that automaton, which appeared to still be working - was the barrel revolving? Great history with the Porcupine - the porcupine carving was terrific.
How depressing to see what they’ve done to the Imperial as it looked quite well-preserved in the pictures from not so long ago. Who looks at that and sees an improvement?!

Thank you! ...and yes I embarked on this mission with more than a little apprehension but found it a surprisingly upbeat outing - apart from the Imperial of course. It would obviously be a bit insincere to mourn its passing too much, as I had never been in there before. I don't know if you noticed in those screenshots from Google Maps that the photos of the really nice bits had actually been posted by the management of the pub itself, as recently as November 2021. I think it was already a Greene King pub at that point so as far as I can tell it isn't a case of a change of ownership - but in the space of three years they've gone from actively promoting those Victorian features to ruthlessly stripping them all out. It's hard to comprehend the thinking behind that! I imagine even Leonardo Dicaprio would be disappointed, should he at some point revisit.
Yes the barrel atop the Chandos was indeed revolving! I vaguely recall that the hands of the cooper also move now and again - perhaps on the hour? Alas I didn't catch that in the video.
I found digging into the origin of the name of the Porcupine really fascinating - and slightly surprising that (as far as I can tell) no other online sources have written about that connection with the Earl of Leicester. It became obvious very quickly with only a bit of digging. I found it slightly mind blowing to think of the chain of events that led to a word on a sign which thousands of tourists pass by every day, without giving much thought to. All the way back to 1394! The Duke of Orleans has a falling out with the Duke of Burgundy, he adopts a feisty symbol of defiance, creates a chivalric order, it becomes a motif for French kings, later co-opted by English nobility (I believe William Sidney was a diplomat and met Louis XII on several occasions) and then over 600 years later here I am making a video about a pub of that rather curious name.

It is fascinating when you discover these long lineages on pub names. Incredible too, when you think how these places have been redeveloped, over and over again.
@@WC21UKProductionsLtd I suspect these people who had "courtier" as their job title were very savvy and extremely good at adapting to change - he apparently was in favour under two different monarchs. Had he been somehow cryogenically frozen and brought back to life today I doubt it would take him long to get up to speed on social media etc!

Oh my, the Chandos pub, you were only a few short steps from the Harp on Chandos Place which though now owned by Fullers sells a massive range of good real ales, and the pub itself is nice too. Only downside is that it is always packed, it's small and everyone knows the beer is good! Admittedly this video is also about pub design but for good beer it is really worthwhile being a bit selective about where you go, if you are a tourist.
I have covered the Harp before, oddly in a video on Covent Garden (the pub's own website refers to them as being in that part of London, doesn't feel quite right to me somehow) so I skipped it on this occasion, but ordinarily if I was around there I would rather go to the Harp than the Chandos.
Back in the early 2000s the casinos would sell double gin and tonics for £1. I never gambled but I used to go to them just to get hammered on the cheap, it was literally cheaper than if I had bought the rough stuff from Sainos
That's a great trick Jake! I had always assumed the opposite, that those casinos would charge extortionate prices for the drinks, but I do see the logic behind it... I'm guessing they were forced to stop at some point?
@@TweedyPubs Yeah I think they stopped, probably realised it wasn't working in their interests or maybe the licensing law changed. The best one in summer was the one with the balcony (the Empire I think) because you had this whole south-facing balcony pretty much to yourself
It's a shame you didn't venture into Waxy O'connors - a bar rather than a pub, but would have liked to hear you describe the interior.
I think I will do a round-up of Irish pubs in London at some point but it's a bit outside my usual area of familiarity and requires more research!

Hi Tweedy, just wondered if you've ever been on a tour of pubs in Norwich? If you've never visited, there's so many pubs here of historical interest, and a great variety of ales! There's direct trains from London Liverpool to Norwich, every 30 mins (1hr 45-50), so can easily be done as a day trip. It's been dubbed "The city of ale" for good reason. Love your videos, keep up the good work!
I've only been to Norwich once actually, many years before I started making CZcams videos. I just went to the Adam and Eve. I would love to return at some point and give it the proper Tweedy Pubs treatment!

Tweedy i have to say i do enjoy your reviews!! Like you i dont warm to the tourist trap of LS but ive had some good nights in the Chandos - it was always cheap in comparison to anywhere else albeit that came with the general gloom of being a Sam Smiths pub.
Ive visited all the others you reviewed, but never had the good fortune to be distracted in the fashion that you were at the Round Table. I must return..... Thanks BTW for all the historical research - personally i find it fascinating.

Yes I'd go back to the Chandos (I think I might have been in once or twice before, many years ago) - it does have a certain atmosphere, which may or may not suit everyone depending on what they're looking for, but I quite liked the way the only thing I could hear in there was the sound of other people talking... and the prices were unbeatable in that area!
I always try and keep myself to myself when I'm out making these videos and not bother anyone if at all possible, but those young people appeared to be interested with the fact I was doing something social media related and came over and asked me what it was all about, then seemed to want to get involved. They were surprisingly good natured and pleasant to talk to - I just always assume people in that age bracket would only ever see a middle aged man as an object of ridicule! I suspect they might have been up all night and were having a "nightcap" (at lunchtime) which made their affable demeanour all the more impressive. Given all the talk you hear these days of young people shutting themselves indoors glued to screens and shunning pubs; after meeting them I was filled with renewed hope for future generations!
Really glad to hear you like the history bits! I worry sometimes that some people might be watching the videos during those segments and are thinking "Why is he showing us these old newspaper cuttings about hairdressers? Show us the bleedin' pubs!". I started searching through old newspapers just as a means of trying to find evidence for the dates claimed for when pubs were established... but I found as a side effect the stories it often digs up provide these little glimpses of forgotten lives which I find quite fascinating.

The pubs around St Martin's Lane and Covent Garden always feel like they have taken some design influence from the surrounding theatres
The Imperial has been vandalised! Awful. But then Greene King’s “IPA” is also awful, slightly flavoured water.
I think the most generous description I could give Greene King IPA on this occasion is "inoffensive", which is rather better than how I'd describe the refurbishment of the Imperial.

Used to work in Charing Cross so the Salisbury and the Chandos were on the regular circuit. I think Chandos is strictly Charing Cross, Salisbury is probably more towards Leicester Square as you rightly include but I appreciate that it's a grey area. When you do a Charing Cross pub review .. include the Harp and the Nell Gwyne... two of the best.
Yes it's hard to pin down these areas! I have (very briefly) covered the Harp and the Nell Gwynne in a video on Covent Garden and thought at the time it somehow didn't seem quite the right way to describe their locations either!
@@TweedyPubs Good stuff I'll have a look! I came across your channel recently and have enjoyed working my way through the back catalog. Nell Gwynee is probably more Covent Garden now you say it! If you want to do a Crystal Palace or Herne Hill version I'm happy to advise. I know South London pubs quite well.
Thanks Tweedy, another interesting video, what a shame that Greene King vandalised the Imperial. A couple of pubs you might like to visit if you venture further north are the Queens in Crouch End and the Salisbury Hotel on Green Lanes, Harringay (both built by the same man), not sure that you'll find any other decent pubs near the Salisbury (though it's not a million miles from Crouch End) but you might find enough of interest around Crouch End to be video worthy, perhaps including the mock Tudor Railway Tavern (you'll need to check opening times).
Thanks Vince! I have been to the Salisbury Hotel on Green Lanes a few times (although not for a few years now) - my wife has a friend who lives nearby and enjoys a drink or two. It is quite impressive! I must give the Queens in Crouch End a go, as Crouch End isn't a million miles from where I live, but I hardly ever go there - and maybe you're right there might be enough for a video around there...?
The Winchester in Highgate (which I featured in a video a while back) also seemed to have some similar design elements to the Salisbury in Green Lanes - particularly the iron work over the main entrance - I wonder if that might have used at least some of the same craftsmen?
@@TweedyPubs Yes i've been to the Winchester several times, entirely possible, John Cathles Hill who built the other 2 was based in Archway in 1881when the Winchester was built.

haven't done any drinking in Leicester Square for about 25 years now but used to do a lot of my drinking in the late nineties in the Nepoleon club which was also a casino - no idea if still there
The one part of London I avoid for obvious reasons much like Times Square in nearby NYC. A fine effort anyway Tweedy although this is rather like the aging movie star who is struggling to remain relevant in a world of indifference to her past glory. I have managed to have a few memorable pints over the years at The Salisbury. It is a gem indeed.

Is the Salisbury counted as a Covent Garden or Leicester Square pub.......I'm not 100% sure to be honest but what I am sure of is that it is a cracking Victorian pub and well worth a visit!
Hard to say! London area names are a subject of constant debate, made all the more thorny by the way people tend to use the names of stations and/or tube stops (which weren't originally names of the areas they're in - e.g. Victoria) to describe an area. It was a lot easier when people used to talk in parishes, as they didn't overlap! So my cop out answer would just be to say it's in St Martins in the Fields.
I think I read somwhere the serial killer Dennis Neilson used to pick up men from the Salisbury pub. One was unfortunately murdered by him after a visit.
The Imperial has been ruined as a classic London Public House and should be classed a Bar now. Surprised that they are allowed to destroy such British Pub Heritage and atmosphere and that the interiors are not listed or protected.
Unfortunately it had no protection - it wasn't a (Historic England) listed building, it wasn't on CAMRA's list of historic pub interiors (not that there's any legal weight behind that) and as far as I can tell it wasn't covered by Westminster Council's "Heritage Assets" / "Building of Merit" scheme. The Chandos, for example, is at least covered by the latter, although I'm not sure what level of protection that offers exactly.

Agreed - I jumped at it, and a bargain for the area! Although yes I would have preferred it out of a cask.
Farrow & Ball has discontinued the turquoise-teal blue paint line as a consequence of your persistent criticism! It only takes one person to make a difference!

Yes I'm a fan of Hedley too. It's interesting how he and I differ in terms of "on screen persona". I feel most relaxed in front of a camera if I'm in the middle of nowhere and nobody else is around - I get quite self conscious if anyone else is listening in while I'm filming. Whereas Hedley seems to really flourish in that podcast format where he has other people to interact with.

Yes it's a shame Greene King have such a monopoly - if I'm doing a pub crawl I don't mind one of them being a GK pub but when it's three in a row it's definitely a bit much!
Tweedy, visiting pubs in Leicester Square so you don't have to! The Salisbury looked somewhat interesting, shame about the rest though. It's also a shame all the pubs in this part of town are owned by about 3 companies, serving the same beers and, making all their pubs more or less look exactly the same. I used to quite like The Thomas Cribb pub off Panton ST. but even that was given a "modern refurb" recently. My advice, just go to The Harp around the corner from The Chandos and skip the rest.
Thanks TKP! Yes I did feel a bit like I was "taking one for the team" during parts of this outing, but at least the Salisbury was a pleasant surprise. I must have been in before at some point but I didn't remember it for some reason.
I agree the Harp is the pub I'd usually always gravitate to in this area - I just omitted it in this video because I included it on a previous video (oddly the Covent Garden one, even though the Harp doesn't really feel like it's in Covent Garden to me). Either that or I'd head north into Soho.

Yes I read that somewhere - whenever you get 10 of the same type of business all within 30 seconds walk of each other you know there's something a bit weird going on!

According to whatpub.com (links for all the pubs featured in the description) most of these pubs open until midnight on Friday and Saturdays, but yes, the rest of the week it's still generally 11pm.

I had a feeling I was getting it wrong! On the 1682 map of London it's written "Shandois", and given the French origin it's much more likely to be a "sh" sound at the start as you say.

What utter twaddle. No information on menu available for any of these pubs. I suspect no permission given to film any of the interiors or staff.

If you're looking for the menus I'd suggest going to look at the website of each pub, that's probably a more efficient way of finding that information than watching a CZcams video.
