    My boss had an 8 year old son who used to visit the office occasionally and everyone would say to his face how good looking he was. Drove me nuts. So I gave an office lecture, saying that if the kid was ugly they wouldn't be telling him how ugly he was. Appearance is biological, the luck of the draw. What I said was to compliment someone on their ACCOMPLISHMENTS, not on their appearance, which they had nothing to do with.

    Id have to say the whole homosexuality/bi sexuality unless it cam from his own mouth was a smear campaign by the soviets to diminish his standing with others. Judaism and to a further extent Christianity has been problematic for the Soviets as scripture/principles is obviously anti communist. Thr Armenians actually have went thru some horrible stuff thru history even genocide/holocaust. Their accusations of homosexuality says more about the Soviets insecurity. When I see the "homoerotic" parts I just dont see it I actually see refrence to Christian iconography/art alot of it refrence to burial rites.

    I totally hate that everybody paints Gatsby inside a good light while Daisy is painted as the villain. Everyone was bad but I'd say Gatsby was the absolute worst. He's somehow been forgiven for stalking Daisy and watching her house like a creep outside, scheming a plan to get her back, and feeling entitled to her. Gastby was the catalyst of everything that happened. If Gatsby never reunited with Daisy, Mrytle wouldn't have died, Wilson wouldn't have died, and Gatsby wouldn't have died. Gatsby chasing after that green light that was too far away caused his demise. Like TLC said," Don't go chasing waterfalls" Gatsby chased after a dream rather than reality, he didnt care to understand that Daisy was an actual human who changed over time, he wanted her to be how she was in the past. He doesn't accept her for who she is, he wanted her for who she *was*. Gatsby lit the fuse for every problem in this story only for it to blow up in his face in the end.

    • @BenfengWang
      @BenfengWang Před 17 dny

      I agree when you said Gatzby did not view Daisy as a human who could change over time. I also agree that Daisy was initially as pure as Daisy five years ago before Nick went to Long Island. Daisy 在1917第一次遇到军官gatzby,当gatzby参加一战之前, daisy 是真心爱gatzby的,当她收到gatzby的信的时候,她尝试过摆脱Tom与家庭的金钱利诱,但5年时间可以改变一个人, east egg 的奢华与阶级彻底地腐蚀了她的纯洁. But from my perspective, his view of Daisy is mainly due to his false childhood dream, not due to his villainy. Myrtle's death in the novel is due to the tragic coincidence of the change in the usage of cars by Tom and Gatsby, rather than Gatsby’s intentions. Since Tom is having a sinful affair with Myrtle, Myrtle unavoidably will be discovered by her husband, and because of Tom’s racist, sexist, status-supremacist attitude, Mrytle will certainly be abandoned by him, as well as her tragedy. Ironically, Gatzby is the one who takes the blame for both Daisy’s and Tom’s mistakes, either for who drove the car which caused death or for “the mystery lover scandal”. Also, gatsby can be criticized for viewing Daisy as a symbol of success in high status and acceptance of East Egg ( aristocratic class) rather than truly viewing her as a romantic partner. But he can easily find any women socialite in his magnificent parties to symbolize his success, no, he didn’t. He knew taking the blame for Daisy’s mistake meant a high risk to his own life and most speculators like Torvald Helmer will certainly choose to betray their formal love. No, gatsby chose to wait. Also, gatsby himself is a self-made man, rather than Tom who is born in success, Gatzby was born in an impoverished farming family in North Dakota, and when he meets Daisy, he views her as a romantic, similar to Romeo's first impression of Juliet. But after World War 1, like Romeo who found out, he accidentally killed Tybalt, Juliet’s kin, even out of self-defense for his friend Mercutio. Gatzby also found out that his real love had disappeared, she had already been forced to marry Tom who was an upper-class guy only interested in ball games. Indeed readers can interpret Gatzby's initial view of his marriage with Diasy for her wealth, but later his bottle logging, although illegal, gained him immense wealth that has already won him success, and it is the only way to gain success in a world that allows people to criticize bottleloggers while themselves secretly enjoy free illegal alcohol. Last but not least, Gatsby's life is just a struggle, he initially works as a janitor at College to pay for his tuition fee; collects crabs at the seashore, and saves a yacht owner by warning him of the forthcoming terrible storm, and he worked as his assistant around the world, but his promised $25,000 fortune from the yacht owner was being robbed by Cody’s mistress, and he started from ashes again. Indeed, Gatzby’s requirement for Daisy to get rid of the five years is too much since Gatsby does not care much for Daisy’s 3-year-old daughter. But saying Gatsby is the cause of all the trouble also seems too much. Consider Nick’s hypocritical judgment of others and his indulging in low-level entertainment in New York; Jordan’s deceitful means of playing golfing, and her carelessness in romance with others; not to mention Tom who uses his high status as an oppressive means in a country that promotes independence and equal opportunities, and his final decision of choosing to let gatzby take the fall of him. Gatzby’s only flaw is that he not only grasps back time, but he also does not know or may be too cowardly to accept the fact that Daisy is no longer his Juliet. Unlike Ferdinand who has the help of Prospero, Gatzby has no help. Unlike Ophelia who chose to drown to get rid of the depravity of Elsinore, Daisy’s soul has already been eaten by the hollowed Long Island, like Rickshaw Boy, although initially honest and industrious, can not fight the fate that will wither their soul. 😢

    I also want to say that I think the reason that the film was suppressed is because it is not naturalistic, rational, linear, and all of the other things that were so important to Soviet era art. It was just outside of the box and was probably for that reason alone considered immoral and corrupt. I can sympathize with them because their state was relatively new and they wanted to have a coherent message which would inform citizenstowards the direction they wanted to have in their particular state which was communism. I’m not a fan of communism by any means, but I do sympathize with their intent to suppress this piece of art, especially since they were bankrolling it I think they believed in artists per se, because they were communist enough to support the making of the art but when they saw what it was, they knew that they could not promote it. It just happened at history and I’m so glad that we can enjoy it in the present form as being fully restored. I’m really excited to get to know this work.

    • @nicofelie
      @nicofelie Před 6 dny

      I get what you’re saying but it’s hard to sympathize with a state that threw many artists and intellectuals to die in hard labor camps just to have a more coherent “message.” But hey you’re right at least now we get to enjoy it so alls well that ends well right ;-) ❤❤ I hope you have an awesome day!!

  • @leslielandberg5620

    The truth is about this film that because it is so symbolist and flowing in its imagery, almost like dream like that it lends itself, perhaps over much, to a phenomenon known as paradol. This means that people might overlay or project their longing for their nationalistic impulse, or some other thing that is important to them, over the iconography, when it is not intended to symbolize this at all. I think the best approach to this is, like most modern art, to simply relax into it, and allow your own mind to gather the impressions, and suggest to you over the course of the entire experience, what it might be about, and to allow your consciousness to address itself to anything that naturally sticks out to you and calls to you and to feel free to ignore anything that does not speak to you. I think that is one of the most legitimate uses of modern art.

    Thank you for the breakdown of this film. This film is way above my head. It’s giving me a very uncanny valley vibe and as of right now, I cannot handle that. What I will say is the setting, location, textures, costumes are alive and impregnated with meaning thus serve as inspiration in art.

      There’s also a lady Gaga video where she took a lot from color of pomegranates :)) idk if she did a good job per se but yeah! And Nicolas Jaar has a whole album of a soundtrack he made for color of Pomegranates (like a soundtrack he made for himself the movie makers didn’t ask him to do it or anything hahah) definitely cool to see all the way it’s affected art!

    Good to see this, one of my favorite directors. I haven't seen Ashik Kerib, but Pomegranates and Suram Fortress are profoundly beautiful expressions of what the camera can show. To me, Parajanov is the same as Bresson and Powell and Pressburger, the camera being used for a new style with infinite artistic possibilities.

    I find some similarities to a film titled "Holy Mountain"; symbolism and visual storytelling greatly overshadowing dialog. Would be interested in your perspectives on that work if you've had the chance to view it.

    Ohh, this is great, thank you so much! I know that there's an in-depth analysis of the film's symbolism in Russian which unfortunately hasn't been translated into English, and I was never able to find any equivalent analysis. I'm so glad to see that that gap has now been filled!
