The unfortunate reality of only knowing Titanic, Queen Mary, Lusitania, United States and a few other North Atlantic liners is never having the sheer joy of being familiar with masterpieces like AWATEA, ORION, the CRISTOBAL-trio, the Italian motor ship VICTORIA, the German Diesel-electric motorship PATRIA, VICEROY OF INDIA, EMPRESS OF BRITAIN '31, CHAMPLAIN and MANHATTAN/WASHINGTON.

My late grandfather's first ship. He joined the White Star Line HOMERIC at Southampton in October 2025 as a 14yo "Bell Boy." He remained on the HOMERIC up until the merger with the Cunard Line in 1934 to eventually form Cunard White Star Line. A name that would only last for 15 years as the company officially became known again as Cunard Line in 1949. My late grandfather retired from Cunard Line after 51 years service. I followed in his footsteps and joined Cunard Line aboard the QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 as an 18yo in 1983. I've always had an interest in the HOMERIC for obvious reasons. Her interiors must have amazed my late grandfather at the age of 14 in 2025. Going from the HOMERIC right through to retiring in 1975 from the QUEEN ELIZABETH 2.

I sailed on her nearly identical sister SS ASSINBOIA twice as a child. As I recall, ASSINBOIA was oil fired and Keewatin was coal fired and my mother thought that ASSINBOIA was therefore "cleaner". I remember the trips well and those ships were small but classy. Dejas vu flooded over me when I toured Keewatin a few years back. I will visit her again in Kimgston.
