  • SS Leonardo da Vinci was an ocean liner built in 1960 by Ansaldo Shipyards, Italy for the Italian Line as a replacement for their SS Andrea Doria that had been lost in 1956. She was initially used in transatlantic service alongside SS Cristoforo Colombo, and primarily for cruising after the delivery of the new SS Michelangelo and SS Raffaello in 1965. In 1976 the Leonardo da Vinci became the last Italian Line passenger liner to be used in service across the North Atlantic. Between 1977 and 1978 she was used as a cruise ship by Italia Crociere, but was laid up from 1978 onwards until 1982 when she was scrapped.
    Tonnage: 33,340 GRT
    Length: 232.60 m (763.12 ft)
    Beam: 28.10 m (92.19 ft)
    Draught: 9.55 m (31.33 ft)
Capacity: 1,326 passengers (413 first class, 342 cabin class, 571 tourist class), or 984 passengers in cruise service

Wish it showed more of the interior of the ship with its artworks and cool mod furnishings. Do love the way they mixed blue and green together - very c. 1960. Considering how these kids would have been hungry most of the time, not a word about the food - Italian Line food was called continental, not just Italian.

It's great that these kids were allowed to go on such a sea voyage at the age of 10-12! I had to wait until I was 16, and then I only went on the "Ilmatar", a small Finnish cruise ship, from Travemünde (Baltic Sea) to Leningrad, Soviet Russia. But that was at least as exciting, on the one hand because Russia was not yet a general travel destination for Western Europeans at that time, and on the other hand because I was very impressed by the tsarist palaces and art treasures.

I sailed on the Leonardo Da Vinci in 1967 a part of a group of students touring Europe. A distant memory.

My friend and I sailed on the Leonardo DiVincini in 1973. We were in Tourist Class. They had student rates ($310 round trip) so Tourist Class was mostly students.
We had our own dining room and lounge where the Ciao Ciao Quartet played nightly. We were not allowed into the other areas of the ship. We had a great time.

I sailed from Genoa to NY on the Leonardo in 1973 too--as a student. I thought I died and went to heaven. Cannot believe how lucky I was even now!

I thank you again for your outstanding work. You have a real gift for making videos that become far more than the sum of their parts. Many are so evocative, I can almost taste the salt air, hear the cry of the seabirds...then catch my breath in astonishment at the size of the mighty vessel I am about to board...and later, when most are asleep, wandering the decks, humbled by the vastness of the sea and the sky, wondering, now that we are far from land and the lights of cities, how there can be so many stars...

    Wonderful video.
I like how they survey the safety systems of the ship (radar, watertight doors) as the Leonardo da Vinci was Andrea Doria's replacement after her capsizing / sinking after her collision with the Stockholm. Ironically, the fire safety system didn't save the Leonardo when she caught fire and burned, capsized, and later sank in La Spezia. An image of her burned-out hulk listing at anchor was one of my earliest memories.
    Thanks for sharing this.

And it might come full circle as ships are more enviromentally friendly than planes are. We may see Liners again!

I was on it back in the late 70s in the Port of Miami my grandparents were sailing to the Bahamas. It was a grad ship at that time I had nice memories visiting seeing them off that day. Does anyone know how the fire started on the ship, I've looked it up many times but there's limited information about it. If anyone knows more it will be greatly appreciated. Rip Leonardo Da Vinci 🙏

I mean, it's the women themselves who let any sort of "chivalry" die. Pushing in agenda, calling it toxic and stuff. So there ya' go, not their fault.
