Very nice video. CAn I replace the sand with perlite?
Yes, the main thing is a media that your media can drain which perlite does
Did multiple searches to find dealer selling the Simpliplot Bio Kelp product shown in this video. The link shown, to amazon, did not show the same product. Nada in regular search, home depot, gardening centers. ??? help
Any bio kelp will provide the same results including the link provided . There is nothing magical about simplots version. I just used it because I have access to their products. They are mainly wholesale.
I’m trying to propagate my Boston fern but it’s just not working 😭😭😭 any suggestions?
Ferns are typically propagated by division
I was recently reading to fertilize again in august. I am in zone 6. Do you recommend. When is a good time to divide. Ty
It's not a bad idea if you are not using a slow release prill
Great tips ! May I ask why you did not cut it closer to the ground ? We are going to add tall grasses near our covered deck, and I am looking into how to care for them.
No particular reason other than that is where the trimmer felt comfortable. 🤣. You can definitely go lower.
The tips of the leaves are turning yellow. Its the first of July here in southern south dakota. Also is it too late to fertilize? This is my first time growing iris. They were given to me last fall and I looked up how to plant them but other than that I dont know very much about them. Also I noticed the ground around them breaking up and I was told its from moles in the yard. Will they destroy my iris? And if so how do I get rid of them? Can i get rid of the moles humanely?
There is such a thing as mole traps where I believe you can relocate them and it doesn't kill them. Moles eat worms, grubs, etc so they will not directly damage your irsh but will disturb the root zone. Being as far north as you are you can probably still fertilize and it be of benefit for the plant.
Hi! I am renting a place with a small front yard. It is full of weeds and the grass is on its last leg. It takes a considerable amount of water to keep the little grass that's left green. Oh, and there is no sprinkler system! I am considering mulching the yard and strategically using a few drought-resistant plants to make it pretty (maybe some stepping stones too). I live in the central Utah desert. It is HOT, but we also get snow in the winter. Would you recommend using cardboard under the mulch as a solution for the next 2 years, or would you recommend I use the weed fabric instead? Thanks! Glad I found your channel! @Dr.Warren
So weed fabric will pretty much do the same thing as cardboard but will let the water filtrate to the soil better. Being in the desert and trying to conserve water I would lean fabric. But fabric eventually breaks down too.
Wìĺ nutrients from compost get through to plants? I am considering putting cardboard on an existing flowerbed of rugosa roses and lavender. I'm in victoria bc. Thank you
That's a great question. Cardboard allows water to run through it so I would think dissolved nutrients would be carried with the water and not bind to cardboard. However I do not have any peer review to suggest my thoughts are correct.
Sir, is their a way to keep it green all year? I live in North FL. Thank you for the video.
It totally depends on temps. Once you have a frost it will go dormant.
@@Dr.Warren Thank you for your help. It's much appreciated
DO you like Tom Petty?
It's classic
Just discovered your channel I'm growing a few maples I'm in Albuquerque NM very hot summers
I was out that way two years ago. A beautiful area. I should have stopped by the "breaking bad house" but didn't 🤣. I hope the video helps you out.
i cant believe people really celebrates lantana, this invasive species took over all our natural landscape and getting rid of em is such pain in the arse, dont plant in the ground, they tend to self-seed at a virgorous rate and by a year, your natural vegetation would be disturbed.
Depending on where you are this is true. They are not invasive where I am. We have to worry about privet, English ivy, and kudzu.
My Zoysia has migrated into my carpet Juniper. I have stopped the migration, is there a selective herbicide that I can apply to the Juniper and kill the Zoysia but leave the Carpet Juniper un harmed?
I think ornamec is rated for this but check the label.
Awesome 👍😊❤thank you for sharing this wonderful message 😁 just got 8 plants planted.❤
That's great!
Out of all the oaks you presented, I still can't identify mine. Can you help me? Can i send you a picture of the leaves with a description of the tree characteristics?
I sent you a message
Watering?
Once established they are VERY drought tolerant. I've never watered mine outside of the first few months of being planted
Can you use cardboard next to trees like Holles and Loquats on clay soil? Worried that my trees my get impacted by putting cardboard down next to them and my shrubs/yuccas. But I also want to kill the grass/weeds around them in the mulch beds
I think you will be ok with cardboard
Live in Mo can I plant full sun? Hot weather?
Yes!! But that far north it's going to be an annual. I'm guessing you are going to be somewhere around zone 6.
Thanks alot
Thanks for watching. I hope it helps. Just be patient with it and it will root.
Thank you for this well done tutorial video. I feel it is worth mentioning that the Blackjack oak would be the exception to the rule that all Red oaks have pointed lobes. Am I missing something here or is this correct? Thanks again for the time you have spent on the making of this video.
Some blackjack oaks will display small points while others will not. Thanks for the kind words. We worked hard on putting this one together.
Hey Doc, I just found you and I will probably be subscribing with a little more time and viewing. This was a good video. I recently bought my 1st young grafted Crimson Queen from Walmart, and of course they didn't have any answers to questions. I planted it outside in zone 7, and though I have many questions, I will just burden you with 2 for now. Excuse my ignorance but the taping together of the tree to the stake, which mine has in 2 or 3 spots, i'm wondering how long should I keep them taped, and being taped won't stunt any vertical growth, right? When should the stake be removed? And do you have any expertise or videos on Sago Palms? Thanks!
If it is Horticulture tape it should just break off as the diameter of the limbs grow. You can remove the stakes once the tree is strong enough to stand up to a hard wind. Palms get out of area of expertise. They are more tropical in nature and I am in zone 8.
So i have some salvia (perfect profusion) that is all bloomed out and turned brown. I was about to cut off the spent blooms when I noticed what seems like the spent blooms themselves are blooming again. Am i mistaking soon to be new blooms for spent blooms? or do they rebloom without being pruned?
They will rebloom some. Mine do this as well. However, they do not bloom near as much if I do not prune them back.
@@Dr.Warren thank you!
California has alot of different types and just to confuse us they interbreed
Yes, oaks often do hybridize.
Does every Oak produce acorns, even those that are more like shrubs with stoloniferous root systems? What is it that classifies a tree as an Oak since many that you discuss here have totally different leaf shape, texture and even color, if not producing acorns? Do all Oaks tend to hold their leaves late into winter, and as some of our White and Red Oaks, into Spring? We had the worst infestation of Spongy Moths I have ever seen this Spring ( Hudson Valley, NY) and every single Oak in our heavily forested surrounding of our home, was denuded. It looks worse than mid winter, since the caterpillars than went to my Larch, then all the Blue Spruce and White Pines, then the Maples, including my collection of Japanese Cutleaf Maples. They covered our house foundation and made gardening a horror since they dropped all over me as well. I hope that the trees can come back to their previous glory next Spring. We had the heaviest “mast” year just one year ago. Will there still be acorns at all this Fall or does an Oak with no leaves not have the resources to produce acorns? This video was so important to me since I have been attempting to learn to identify our trees for so long, and find it so confusing. Our area has many types of trees and unfortunately, asking those who work for tree care companies gets me different answers for the same tree🤦♀️
Yes, in order to be considered an oak one of the characteristics is that its fruit is an acorn.
What is the name of the song in the intro?
I am not sure. This is an older video and it is something I had copyright permission to use probably from Canva.
They're everywhere here in Central Florida. I just grow mine in containers, so they don't spread. And then nip the flower buds. Once they're done blooming before the seed. Pods and the fruits are produced, but the hummingbirds butterflies moths love them
This is great! I know they are invasive where you are and its cool you are taking measures to make sure yours dont escape captivity.
How much water and when to water iris
I only water mine if we are in a drought. They are very drought tolerant.
Will you please make a video on young 7 foot yoshino tree? It's so hard to find information on young Yoshino trees 😣
I will put it on the list for sure.
Love mine too, and I've rooted about 5 actually and so so easy, and there big and beautiful, got 6 of these bushes rooted now for my aunt in a pot on the front porch and come fall, I'll take them to her house and we're gonna plant them at the back of her property to just make a privacy like fence,, great video🫶✌️
Thanks for watching. I am glad you had success with rooting them. They are indeed easy to root you just have to be patient with them.
@@Dr.Warren I have to share with you how my Granny rooted hers, she would take a piece off her other bush, and where ever that bush was gonna be planted, she would lay that piece on the ground right where was going to be planted, and take a concrete block and set on top of the part to root and just left it, and there's those yellow bushes all over the yard now, my granny has been gone a long time, so I know those bushes have been there years and years, had to tell you that, our elders could teach us so much 🙏🫶🦋🌻
Thanks for the video. I noticed here that you only cut the flower head off. A different youtuber cut the plant almost down to the ground for a second round of blooms. What's the preferred method? Or do both methods work?
Both will work. Cutting the foliage will also make it more "bushier" if your plants are leggy.
california here home has it already
I have a young tree that was bare root planted in the fall and has grown beautifully. However, the branches are really long now. Should I prune them at all to get them to shoot new branches?
It will definitely help it fill out.
Do these do best in full sun?
Yes!
These grow everywhere in Florida! Never knew it's name. Is it medicinal in anyway?
I believe they do have some medicinal value but off the top of my head I can't remember. In some parts of Florida this plant is invasive. It's probably why you see it often.
I am wrong that the plastic tape used on most boxes, other the Amazon boxes, would become micro plastics over time. I also seem to remember that those micro plastics can eventually be take up and into the plant tissue. Am I wrong on this?
I would need to do some research on whether plastic is systemic or not. Off the top of my head I would think they wouldn't be.
Can you do this method with other plants like rose of Sharon?
I don't see why not
I have had a salvia for years and it has always been my least liked plant. I have never got a second bloom. I usually wait until all the flowers are spent. I prune it just like in the video and the best results I have ever had are maybe one or two flower spikes but the foliage gets so ugly looking. What am I doing wrong?
It could be the cultivar you have or not a long enough growing season depending on where you are.
I just planted 4 of these trees, how often should I water the newly planted trees? Thanks much and this video was great!
Jeff I would saturate every other day and pull back slowly to twice a week, etc. once established you shouldn't have to water at all unless you have a drought.
I’m sorry I have to comment this. I’m southern deep southern not kind of southern where you kiss your cousin but southern and I’ll be damn if I talk this slow and be this out of breath in a simple conversation buddy needs to get him a Red Bull or a bang maybe even a testosteronetest
Dr I grow it in Sacramento Ca
That is great! I have heard of some isolated pockets out west where it does a good job.
Where did you order the new part clamp
There should be a link in the description?
Where do you buy the new clamp
Do you remove the spent flower stalks as soon as the flowers are done, then cut back the leaves later (when they get half brown)?
You can do it either way. It is not going to hurt the plant to go ahead and dead head the flowers as long as you are not trying to collect seed.
Out of focus footage, hardly audible b/c of stupid music....why are you putting this up at all? Useless.
I’m in 7b and have 2 bloodgoods on order-not quite summer here but still hitting 90’s. Do I shelter in pots until the fall or do I plant in the ground and be mindful of watering well?
Personally I would keep them somewhat shaded and wait until fall. If you elect to plant now make sure you can keep them watered.
thanks. excellent presentation
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
I used a rooting hormone with reverse osmosis water in a north facing window and the roots grew like crazy. I’m here to find out when the best time is to plant it in soil.
Thats awesome! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.
Great! Thank you.
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment
I live in St. Petersburg. I was told by a reputable plant store not to use Atrizine in my St. Augustine. It certainly killed the Bermuda grass!
If I am not mistaken the label on Atrizine is rated for St Augustine.
Thanks so much for this video. Could you please tell me how many rhizomes should I plant together?
It depends on the look you are going for. If you want them in mass you will need several per square foot.
